We booked this hotel after arriving at the airport. We were going to book a 4* in the area, but Hotwire showed an upgrade to this 4.5* for only $7 more per night. My wife convinced me to do the upgrade and we are happy we did. I actually thought we would get the Palomar Hotel. Unexpectedly won a bid for a lower price than expected. Starting bid for 4* Granville Entertainment District at $85. Worked my way up in $5 increments until I reached $105. Surprisingly no counteroffer at $100. Detailed bid: Granville: $85 + City Hall: $90 + Coquitlam-Burnaby: $95 + Langley: $100 + North Van: $105 (accepted) Seems like it was going for around $125 on Hotwire a few weeks ago and about $200 on Expedia for same dates. 2.5* Boutique, Internet, $115 After a few days of unsuccessful Priceline bidding, I decided to take my chances on Hotwire. I suspected it was the Marrakech according to this site and indeed it was. I used the links from this site to get started. It is interesting to note that when I started watching this on Hotwire, it was $113. It then jumped to $118. After more browsing, it dropped to $115, up to $116 and finally back to $118. I got my girlfriend to check and her computer showed $115. When it dropped down to $115 I bought it. Immediately after buying, my computer showed $118 while hers showed $115.

I've been trying similar dates without much luck either (9/22 to 9/26). I went up to $180 for 4* and $165 for 3.5* (excluding Upper West Side). I'm thinking of staying at the Ramada Long Island City since it's close to the subway and a quick ride to midtown. They have a deal online that saves 20% if you stay 3 nights ($88/night). I have no idea what the area is like since I mostly stay around Midtown.

Started with low ball bids on 3* at $25 and stopped at $60 (both zones). I started bidding last Friday with low ball offers for 4* in the Copley Square and Quincy Market zones and was unsuccessful up to $125 so I gave up and opted for a 3*. I figure that since HOTWIRE had a hotel for $139 (and earlier at $109), I could do better than that on PRICELINE. Of course I used the PRICELINE links from this site to start my searches.
