Thanks for all your help. You have given me a lot to think about! Yes, I have been to Vegas thre times before and stayed in the Hacienda twice (now gone of course) and the Excalibur. We are coming to sightsee (and bringing the children for the first time - 7 and 10) and yes, budget is an issue. We are flying in from London so with the 8 hour time difference, I doubt we will want to do much the first day at least so maybe you are right about staying on the strip. We are then going to LA for about 5 days (I have been looking at "possibly" the Staybridge Suites on Hotwire but they seem to have disappeared for the moment), then up to San Francisco, onto Seattle and then a cruise on Diamond Princess to Alaska. I don't know where you got Florida from - but we did go there in November last year, so maybe you are looking at an old post or maybe it was the reference to Disney? I have only used Hotwire once so far and with this boards help, I have got Embassy Suites at San Francisco Airport for $70 and I am very pleased with that choice. The free breakfast played a part in choosing that. We have stayed at La Quinta in the past so are aware of the distance between the Airport and San Francisco itself. In Vegas, I have held rooms at Keylargo (Quality Inn) as they offer a free shuttle from the Airport and then to the Strip but I am now swaying towards the Strip after your comments. Also, a room opening directly to the outside in August might prove a bit too hot for us - we might want to stay in the airconditioning as much as possible! Therre is a 3* on the strip for $66 with casino, restaurant and pool - any ideas? With two children and luggage for a month we would not want to swap hotels after two nights! We will want to sightsee and shop - and pool for the children in the early morning and evening when no direct sun. Not interested in gambling. Tuscany Suites looks good for four and the pool looks lovely - but no shuttle. The other hotel I would possibly like is the Orleans (shuttle to Strip) as it looks good for children) but again the weekend is dear. That is easily identifiable by the childrens facilities icon. May try Priceline. The Westin (I think) came up when I first started looking for under $70 - wish I had taken it. Thanks again for your interest and will no doubt bee seeking you advice about LA, Seattle or Vancouver! Tracey
