Tried Annapolis first as it's closer to my destination for the 11th and was unsuccessful with bids on 2 1/2 & 3 * in the $40-$50 range. Moved to DC Subs and tried 3*s from $45 - $50 then 2 1/2*s starting at $35. Bid through Savingsbarn.
Just wanted to follow up on this, as we did have some difficulties with the car, but Alamo handled it professionally.
The trip was to St Louis and Branson, and the first day after picking up the car, we drove the 4-hours to Branson. Along the way the cruise control quit, the service light came on and the theft system light came on. Once we got to Branson, we called the service number and they arranged for an exchange in Springfield which added another 1 1/2 hours of drive time to the day. On the way to Springfield the dash guages stopped working, so I drove the last 20 miles with no spedometer! I've never had so many problems with a rental car before, and the thing only had 6,000 miles on it. :)
We were able to return the car empty, after almost 6 hours of driving it, basically draining the tank, and got upgraded to a midsize for all the added trouble. So my compensation was the upgrade and a free tank of gas.
The rest of the trip in the other car went off without a hitch.
I vaguely recall my parents getting that Residence Inn in Kalamazoo through Priceline when I was in college there almost 5 years ago.
There really aren't a lot in the 3* range in Kzoo which is probably why you aren't getting much, but the 2 1/2* hotels in the area are fine and in good areas, and I think there is a chance you could get the Residence Inn on Kilgore as a 2 1/2* bid on PL.

I suspect that it's the Saturday/Sunday night combo that's hurting me, and I wouldn't mind paying more for one night if I got the other one cheaper, but I'd also prefer not to change hotels.

Thanks for all the extra info on the area :) I'm planning the drive from Portland to Spokane prior to the first night (praying I can appreciate the views on the drive and still make it into Spokane before Riverfront park closes the carousel, the train, and the gift shops), and I'm planning to jog into Idaho the second day to spend most of it at Silverwood in Athol. The Coeur d'Alene info is great, as that was where I'm planning to spend the evening and grab dinner once the park closes.
It should be quite a trip :) I still have two more Seattle nights to book... and I'm staying with family for the two-day-hole in between the Portland hotels.
I think I started aiming for downtown 4* at ~$50, and worked my way up a few $ at a time. When I added Surrey at the $55 level, I neglected to verify that it didn't have any non-4*s. The desription of the hotel and it's surrounding area still sounds lovely, so I'm not terribly disappointed that I won't be downtown.

Spokane was giving me all sorts of headaches trying to PL a room. I made several attempts for the 3* range downtown, and wasn't getting any bites with an upper bound limit around $60, made a couple more sets of attempts dropping to 2.5* in just downtown and didn't get any bites staying under $50, finally opted to try outside of the downtown area and got this one today.
