The general difference between these two levels (by PRICELINE) of hotels is 3* have full-service restaurants and banquet facility, some charge for phone calls and internet, while 2.5* (with exception of Courtyard) offer complementary brakfast. This American has to put up with the hotel chain in America often, I prefer it over a French chain with numeral.

This hotel is right by the VTA (light rail) Metro stop. VTA bus Route 10 is the free ride from Santa Clara to the Metro station, with stops at the airport. Make sure that you get on the bus to Metro rather than to Santa Clara. I almost forgot that you can get a free ride from Holiday Inn. There are two light rail routes serving this strech, service is frequent between Metro and Downtown. This Holiday Inn was converted fron Hyatt about 2 years ago. It is a two-story old fashioned hotel in a garden setting, rooms are nicely appointed. Since these are weekdays, $60 is a good deal.

I started in the 2* space at $35, and rebidded through adding San Jose and Sunnyvale-Santa Clara zones.

I apologize for forgeting to list the star rating. This ESA is still rated 2* by Priceline. It is on the low end of 2*. Since there is no 1* Priceline participant in this zone, I usually lower the rating to rebid.

The lowest AARP weekend rate is $89 for a non-suite room on the hotel web-site.

I have not had luck in the past 3 months (I did not try during the holidays) bidding in the San Jose, SantaClara, Sunnyvale and Milpitas zones at less than $40 for 2*, and I had to settle for the South San Jose ESA. Now I know the price of getting into a more convenient location than South San Jose.

I started with a 5 night bid (Thursday - Monday), but the longest weekend I can have this time is 3 nights (Fri- Sun). Sometimes I can get Thursday at this price, but Monday night is always a push. The hot rate on the hotel web site is $89 for Fri and Sat. and $189 for Sun. I was offered $124 for Monday night when I tried to extend my stay on Priceline.

My offer of $38 for 2.5* was not accepted in Raleigh, Durham and RTP zones. I did not try Chapel Hill because I was sure that I could be grabbed by the antiquated Holiday Inn at $35. I rebidded and was acceptedthe in Cary zone at $42 after 24 hour waiting period . I stayed at this Homewood frequently through Priceline up to 1.5 years ago. I really like the place, but inflation has brought the minimum acceptable bid from $35 to $42. The best AARP rate for a non-suite room (King or 2-double) is $89 on the hotel web site.

The AAA/AARP rate on the hotel web site is $49.50 for a queen room and $67.50 for King room. I end up paying a little more thru PL. Well, this my first time staying at the SLO area.
