  1. Info Passed along by a friend of mine: It's a boutique-style hotel- the rooms have balconies, and its on the expensive end. I've only been in the lobby and the restrooms, but its a gorgeous hotel. There's a very nice lobby with lots of seating for reading or having coffee or alcoholic beverages. The bar is beautiful and there's a piano. There's also a concierge, a doorman, and valet parking. I'd be concerned about the noise factor as it is located at a busy intersection, and the Big Dig is just a breath away, but I'm guessing the hotel has thermapane windows. On Saturdays, around the corner from the hotel is the infamous fruit and vegetable market that is only open on Saturdays. The hotel is plush. I had a friend stay there, and I tried to deter her because of the cost. She did rave about the hotel, and it is plush, but I don't think worth $300 plus per night, which is the rack rate. There's plenty of variety in the area for restaurants and pubs. And, its well located to get to the restaurants in Boston's North End -- its within walking distance.
  2. I heard (ie- not first hand experience) the AmeriSuites on 17th Street allows free parking while you're cruising. Call them to double check, but at least it's a start. I'll post more as i find them. As an "add on"... this post indicates a way thru Hotwire to almost be certain that you're getting the AmeriSuites (almost because ratings and circumstances can change at any time, blah, blah, blah) KEY Amenity Ratings for Hotwire (<-- this is a PRIME example of this website coming "full circle".. finding out who offers free parking, then finding out how to get that hotel as cheap as possible) This may be an instance where it's worth paying a few dollars more thru Hotwire than risk getting some other hotel thru Priceline. When parkinng is factored in, an almost "sure thing" thru Hotwire may be worth paying a little more for than taking the "chance" thru Priceline. Remember, Priceline has the option of upgrading you to a higher star level, so you're not "safe" just bidding the Priceline zone of the AmeriSuites. There are probably others hotels that have similar parking deals, and maybe BurBunny (who knows the area VERY well) can add more insight. Unless this is a cruise in the immediate future, i'd wait and start finding out which other hotels offer free parking. Let us know if you find any more.
  3. originally posted by bturner13 but moved here to benefit the most number of people: FORT. LAUDERDALE FLORIDA HOTELS? What hotels (areas in Ft. L.) allows for car parking (fee or free) while out on a cruise if you stay at their hotel the nite before/after a cruise? Tks!
  4. The above question re: Fort Lauderdale Hotel Parking is being re-posted in the Florida Hotel List and Tips thread as it pertains to a specifc area. Once it is answered, i think it will beneift more people there as that is where people would likely look in the future to find the answer if they have the same question. Please post your reply there. <as always, thanks for posting>
  5. Did you also ask them about using a check card and/or cash deposit instead of a credit card?
  6. You can see how this will work by looking at the NY or the FL "List and Tips" as these two states already have multiple tips listed after the "master lists" which are pinned at the top of the thread. Feedback welcomed.
  7. Metrocard is NYC subway system's fare card, and is good on any NYC bus or subway. Fare is $2.00 per ride, but you are entitled to one free transfer from bus-to-bus, bus-to-subway, or subway-to-bus if it occurrs within 2 hours of your original paid fare. Unlimited ride cards are also available... $7/day or $21$24/week. The day passes are good for the calendar day of the first swipe, until 3am the next calendar morning. Cards are available at any subway station, as well as vending machines located at most stations, but the "Unlimited Day Pass" is only available through the vending machines. Subway Map Metro Card
  8. LGA Bus and Subway- cheapest way from LGA to NYC is via (this is not an either/or proposition, you must take the bus and then transfer to the subway). Take the Q33 bus to 74th St/Broadway (NOT the B'way you're thinking of... this one is in Queens) where you can then take the #7 Train into NYC. The 7 Train runs up/down 42nd St once in NYC. Fare is $1.50/bus and $1.50/train. However, if you buy a metrocard you get a free transfer from the bus to the subway, so the total fare is only $1.50. As well, there is an "unlimited" metrocard day pass available for $4 which gives you unlimited rides on any NYC bus or subway for a calendar day (with the calendar day ending at 3am the calendar day following its first use). If taking this trip from NYC to the LGA, be sure to get on the LOCAL #7 train, as the express doesn't stop at 74th St/Broadway. Trip time is about 1hr 15 minutes depending upon how long you wait for the bus and/or train. Bus/Shuttle- there are various shuttle busses available into NYC. Many stop at the door of the passenger's hotels, others make 2 stops: one near Grand Central Station (42nd St and Park Ave) and one at NY Port Authority (42nd St and 8th Ave). One of these stops is likely to be close to a subway line that you can use to get to your hotel, or a taxi should be readily available nearby. Be forwarned that if you take the shuttles that stop at each passenger's hotels, you may be the last person dropped off, which makes for a VERY long and unwanted tour of NYC hotel lobbies. Trip time to each of the above stops is about 25 minutes, with time getting to your hotel added onto that. Typical cost is $12/one way. Taxi- the most convenient and most expensive. Cost varies depending upon where in NYC you need to go, but $30 is a good guess, and definately the suggested mode of travel for 2 or more passengers with luggage. Trip time can vary widely depending upon traffic, but should take about 25 minutes. Tolls are the responsibility of the passenger. JFK - here is a good link for General JFK Transportation Options Subway- AirTrain ($5 fare), where you will get on the A train ($2 subway fare). The A train makes its way into Manhattan, entering downtown and works its way uptown towards the upper west side (E, J, and Z trains also available). If traveling from NYC to JFK, be sure to get on the A train that says Far Rockaway or Rockaway Park, NOT the one that says Lefferts Blvd, as the Lefferts Blvd. train does NOT stop at JFK. Fare $2.00, but be sure to read info above in the LGA area, as well as the other thread titled "Metrocard". Generally safe during the day, but not recommended late at night as the train does go through some 'rough' neighborhoods. Trip time is 1hr 45min+. Bus/Shuttle- typical cost into NYC is $17/each way, just like LGA shuttles, some stop at each hotel or one of two stops: one near Grand Central Station (42nd St and Park Ave) and one at NY Port Authority (42nd St and 8th Ave). Time of trip varies WIDELY depending upon traffic, 45 minutes would be considered good, 2+ hours is possible (and would be considered bad). Taxi- fixed rate of $45 + tolls and tip to anyplace in Manhattan. Again, travel time can vary widely!! EWR - here is a good link for General EWR Transportation Options MetroLink- NJ's answer to the subway. Metrolink takes you from EWR to Penn Station. Trip generally takes less than 1 hour and is great if you are arriving at a time when there is likely to be traffic heading throught the Lincoln Tunnel (which is unpredictable, but almost always backed-up midweek at 8:00am-10am and 4:30pm-6:30pm). Fare is about $12, and is probably the best and most economical way to get to NYC from EWR. Bus- there is a large coach bus that travels from EWR to either Port Authority, Grand Central, or Penn Station; busses also travel from EWR to a Downtown Manhattan or Chinatown. Fare is $12/each way ($19/RT) and busses depart every 10-15 minutes (downtown/chinatown bus departs every 30 minutes). The midtown stops also offer a shuttle service to your hotel (for an extra $4 i THINK), but i wouldn't recommend this as you'll be stopping at other hotels along the way, and a taxi would be about the same amount, and the subway/bus even cheaper. Link to Bus Company: Bus To/From EWR Bus to PATH- you can take the NJ Transit bus from EWR to Newark Penn Station, at which point you can take the PATH train from Newark Penn Station into Manhattan. NOT recommended after daylight hours... area around Newark Penn Station is not great. Here are the NJ Transit Bus Schedule links: NJ TRANSIT BUS #62 (most frequent) NJ TRANSIT BUS #67 (infrequent) NJ TRANSIT BUS #40 (stop listed as 'under' Newark Penn Station and also goes to nearby prison :) ) NJ Transit Stipulates only 2 bags per person not to exceed 22" x 16" x 8" Here is the connecting information for the PATH Train: System Map PATH TIMETABLE and SCHEDULE Taxi- travel time can vary widely depending upon traffic... 45 minutes is a good guestimate, but can be as quick as 30 minutes or as long as 1 1/2+ hours! Rates are fixed depending upon destination. Base rate for one stop is $40 + $6 toll for mid-town (i think covers 23rd St - 59th St) westside, with an additional $5 charge to get to the east side. If not going to midtown, there are then additional $5 charges added on for each 'zone' outside of midtown. There is also a $1 charge for each oversized bag. Surprisingly, i think better rates are available through some local car service companies. I can also recommend a local taxi company that will pick you up at the airport and take you to Hoboken or Jersey City for $25 (vs. $35 if you get a cab from the airport taxi line)... you can then had into Manhattan from the Hoboken or Jersey City PATH train stations. MAC ARTHUR AIRPORT (added in post below)
  9. Where to park (and how much will it cost) is a common question for visitors to NYC. The following is posted with permission from Phaelon56: "Hotel parking will vary wildly in price from $25 to $60 per night including taxes. The perimeter lots are worth considering - out on 11th Ave in the 40's if I recall. There's a nice secure indoor garage on 43rd just path 10th heading west - it's the first parking garage sign on the block (can also enter from 44th). Price for 24 hours is $16 including all taxes. Over in the east side in midtown it's much tougher to find a bargain - I can't find anything much under $25 per night over there. If the Garment District is convenient, there's a garage on 38th between 8th and 9th that is about $18 for 24 hours but it's not open all night - closes at 11 PM. They have an exit onto 37th that makes for a relatively easy exit to the Lincoln Tunnel or West Side Highway. It's a more central location the place out on 43rd but getting out to the tunnel takes longer at busy times of day." In summary, parking at your hotel can be a very EXPENSIVE proposition, and the longer your stay the more it makes sense, and the more you'll save, by parking at a non-hotel parking garage. Please add any other suggested garages to this thread.
  10. This list is NOT a complete list of all hotels that Priceline offers in this area, it is ONLY a compilation of hotels that have already been reported on this forum. Hotels are added/removed by Priceline all the time, and star ratings can change at ANY time. As well, the geographic boundaries of an area are subject to change, so it is always a good idea to look at the Priceline map before purchasing. DO NOT USE THIS LIST to determine what areas to add when attempting to bid again within the 24 hour window (CLICK HERE for information on how to add cities in order to bid again). In light of the above, you MAY get a hotel that is NOT on this list, or get a hotel on this list but at a star level you didn't expect (if the star rating has changed). Lastly, this board (and its members) are here to assist you, if you have a question or are unsure of something, please ask before purchasing (since Priceline stipulates NO cancellations/refunds)! 11. Both PRICELINE and HOTWIRE each have their own "terms of service" which are the actual rules which govern your puchase, but here is a short tutorial on each: Priceline and Hotwire share many similarities, as well as many differences. The general theme of each service is that you will get a great deal, but will only be told the name of the hotel after you agree to purchase it. This is presented as a 'win-win' since the hotel is able to get revenue for a hotel room that would have otherwise gone empty, and the consumer gets a great deal. As well, by not disclosing the name of the hotel until it is purchased, the hotels are able to charge higher prices to guests that only want to stay at their specific hotel and book through 'traditional' methods. With Priceline you are able to pick the area you'd like the hotel to be in, the dates of your stay, the minimum star rating (quality level), and the price. You tell Priceline that you want a hotel in XYZ city, 4 stars or better, and you are willing to pay $50/nite. Priceline will then see if they have any rooms that fit your criteria. If they do, you now own it. HOTWIRE follows the same general theme, except Hotwire allows you to pick the area you'd like the hotel to be in and the dates of your stay. Hotwire will then show you prices for a variety of hotels (without disclosing the names) at different quality levels, as well as what amenities are available at each one. You can then decide which, if any, you'd like to purchase. Once you agree to buy the hotel, the actual name and address will be revealed. If you have any questions about either service, feel free to ask. The users here are a friendly bunch and will be happy to help.

  13. Although you're only guaranteed accomodations for 2 people, just call up the hotel and request a room with 2 beds (and throw in a smoking/non-smoking request as well). Unless the hotel is sold out or it's EXTREMELY busy, i'm confident your request will be honored. Would also be a smart idea to behave yourselves at check-in (always a good policy). An even better idea would be to have 2 of you go to the counter at check-in, get your keys, go out to the car, re-enter the hotel 2-3 minutes apart in pairs... all of this is assuming you don't want to try for another room (which could always be at a different hotel). Please post your winning hotel results in the appropriate state category so that others can benefit from the "known hotel" down the road. It also may be in an area where you'd have a high probability of getting another room, via Hotwire or Priceine, at the same hotel, but we can't help if we don't know the hotel info or know for how many days your accomodations are for.

  15. This is a pretty good deal and has everything you need to "go wireless" with a notebook computer: $85 Netgear MR814 Router $50 MA401 Wireless Card for Laptop $20 Router Rebate (expires 3/30/03) $10 Laptop Card Rebate (expires 3/30/03) $50 Rebate for buying BOTH (expires 2/22/03) $135 - $80 (mail in rebates) = $55 The first 2 rebates get mailed to New Rochelle, NY which has a reputation for SLOW processing. The $50 rebate gets mailed to Seattle, WA. Since they get mailed to different processing centers and have different offer codes, i don't think there is a problem with using all 3 rebates. The first 2 rebates require original UPC codes while the third asks for a copy of the UPC codes. ALWAYS make copies of all the information you send to rebate companies and mark a follow-up date on your calendar. You can even use this board's calendar (link at top right corner of the page).... just make sure that you make the event "private" by using the drop down menu, because the rest of us don't care when your rebates should arrive :) EDIT 2/24/03: Deal now dead that the $50 Rebate on both has expired. The other 2 rebates are avaiabe individually, but not so "hot" anymore, as those two items can frequently be had for similar prices if not better.

  18. ORIGINALLY POSTED BY "Gone Fishing" but moved here: First post!!! Used Priceline Jan28,2003 Tampa FL Bid one week ahead Bid $40.00-- accepted 2 1/2 stars-one persom= one night Specified airport area only Wellesly Inn / suites 3.5 miles from airport Total--$50 included tax 5.00 and priceline fee $5.95 Room Queen bed with sofa bed Great amenities-exercise room, nice large free bfst. laundry room.ironing board and iron apparently all rooms have kitchen with stove, refrig, coffee pot and microwave. Service good- MY only mistake--I did not interpret ion for amenities correctly Was no airport shuttle--So taxi from airport cost $10 pus tip so there went some of my savings. I took bus next day to pick up rental car. (usually I pick up rental when I arrive but it was late ands I was tired after leaving from California and changing planes ect.) Also minor issue-- next AM I asked desk person if any Expresso coffee shops near (as Starbucks, Java House etc)She said no.. One block away was a Starbucks!!! I did servive.
  19. However, by using this board you agree that you do so at your own risk! (in other words, NO WHINING allowed!!) 20. Phaelon, Interesting reference to the cash deposits that some hotels have asked: Double Charge for PL stay Forgot to tell you... NICE gift!!
  21. What did they charge you, your bid price or Priceline's price? :) Although neither will prevent this from occurring, two suggestions i can make: 1) Dispute the charge with your credit card company and let them deal with the headache (although this isn't my style, i like to take care of things myself) 2) I always try (but don't if the check-out line is long and i can check out via in room television) to get a receipt from my stay. As well, if they took an imprint of my credit card, rather than just swiped it, i ask for it back or have them rip in half. Never happened to me personally, but have heard one other story of the same thing happening. Five times is pretty unlucky!
  22. You posted it just fine and in the right place... couldn't have done it better myself!! You even posted the amenities, which is one of the hardest parts since they disappear after you purchase, and is one of the most important pieces of information to know with Hotwire in order to assist in figuring out the hotel. One question though, do you know the sub-category of midtown (ie- MidtownSouth or MidtownEast)? Thanks for posting, and welcome to the board!
  23. Anybody know the Kentucky zone this falls into?
