  1. I have stayed here using Hotwire, and the hotel is in a great location with free parking. My only gripe is that they insist on making a photocopy of your driver's license for ID purposes, hopefully they shred this upon check out; although I asked for the copy upon check out.

Too late for your trip, but for anyone that plans on staying here, I recommend getting an inflatable bed at the Target store around the corner, they have a twin size with a built in fan for about $40.00. Very comfy and suitable for an adult, ask the desk for a spare set of linens, just tell them you are sleeping on the floor due to a bad back.

I don't make the rules for Hotwire, but I play by the rules and I won't accept poor service or negative attitude from anyone, especially a front desk clerk. Just ask for the manager on duty when this is encountered and make a complaint immediately. Most Holiday Inn chain hotels (for which Candlewood is) also list the name and location of the property owner. Write a complaint letter if you are not satisfied after speaking to the manager on duty.

  2. Peridot, all you want to know about getting around between the airports and Manhattan may be found on the two links above. You will pay a lot more for a room in Manhattan. I am always looking for a good deal and I think you need to "bite the bullet" and grab that Hotwire deal in Jersey City for $145.00, you won't have to switch hotels.

a year from now, you will forget paying an extra $50.00 for the room, but you will remember your trip to NYC.

  3. Staying at LGA is a good idea if you fly into or out of that airport or have business in that part of Queens (which I occasionally do) or if you need to get some great Korean Barbecue (which I always do), that's it. If an $80 room appeals to you, it might take two hours and three transfers just to get out there from Newark, and with luggage, fuggetaboutit!!!! What have you saved?? Do not consider LGA for your trip.

There are shuttles FOR HIRE that you can get at Newark Airport that will be cheaper than a cab, and they will take you anywhere you'd like to go for a FEE. You should start at this website:Newark Liberty Airport for information about getting to and from the airport. Also, spend some time on this part of the message board and many of your questions and those still unasked will be addressed here: Travel around NY NJ

  4. using Hotwire, you can get what appears to be the Ramada Limited in Jersey City, this seems to match several of your criteria: free shuttle from Newark, close to PATH (just two blocks from the Journal Square station) and as of last week, there was a parking garage close by that offered free parking (up to 12 hours). This is a 2* property that is available for about $105 plus tax. This probably misses, though, on one criteria: its not that cheap :)

  5. At least I know I scored a great hotel for 3 nights and can probably park on the street overnight.

At least the doorman at the Hyatt can call you a cab in case your car isn't there when you return. :) Hope you don't have a Honda or a VW Jetta they are among the top 10 stolen cars, the chop shops love 'em

You are really lucky to get the Hyatt, a great hotel and a great price, just use your savings and pay to park, this advice coming from someone who hates to pay to park.......

  6. wishful thinking, the $37 Hyatt rates are history, just a fond memory for those who were lucky enough to score at that ridiculously low price. I just paid over $100 for the Ramada Ltd in Jersey City, a 2* property :) This is shown for your dates of travel at $108. Candlewood is a nice property, but how many are in your party? I believe the Candlewood only has Queen beds at the PL or HW rate, but would be a great hotel to base your NYC vacation. About two blocks to the PATH station, but the hotel shuttle bus will take you and pick you up, and you will be close to a grocery store for provisions. The Hyatt appears on Hotwire at $136 for your dates of travel. Both sites can be accessed through savingsbarn.com and will support message boards like this one.

  7. not a big fan of Maggiano's, went to the Philly outpost and had the "family style" dinner, everything seemed really off, kind of like all served from a steam table, and tasted burnt. How ravioli and chicken parm can be burned is beyond me, might have been the sauce. If you are a bit adventurous, there is a great Mexican restaurant in Norristown, right on Main Street, just go north from your hotel on Rt 202, cross the bridge over the Schuykill river into Norristown, then make a right turn onto Main Street, it is on the left hand side:

    Taqueria La Michoacana

    301 E. Main St.

    Norristown, Pennsylvania 19401

Kof P also has a three upper end steak houses: Morton's, Ruth's Chris, and Sullivans (part of the Lone Star chain, I believe) the first two are great if you are on an expense account; somehow paying $38 for a steak and $5.95 for a potato rubs me the wrong way if its my nickle....Sullivan's has better prices and the quality is good. Kof P has become so suburbanized that just about all of the restaurants are chains :) so you have to seek out the local independantly owned places.

  8. You never answered if you are willing to SPLIT YOUR BID and that's the first thing that we will need to know to begin putting together a strategy.

Please answer the above and list your maximum budget per night.

Yes, for a one week stay in Vegas, some folks might have to stay in three hotels. It is a unique hotel market unlike any in the country and it is all predicated on the law of supply and demand. Rates during the week (Sunday to Thursday nights) when there is no large convention in town may sell for 1/3 the weekend rates. Answer the above and the board will show you the way. You might want to start with the Las Vegas Checker (look below the line "Our Exclusive free Tools") and enter your dates. Also check the posting above by rrajeshh as it explains rebidding as you have many zones in Vegas.

  9. Even still, I'm not too excited about sleeping on a sleeper sofa for 4 nights...

agreed, that's why we often bring an inflatable air mattress on many trips when it's 4 to a room, get one with a built in pump, skip the Coleman unit as the pump will take up too much space. This may not work in many NYC hotels as the rooms are so small, you have to go outside to change your mind :)

This should work at the Beekman Towers in place of the sofa bed.

Check it out at Target using Travel Links to Help Support BetterBidding

  10. just one short block away from the PATH Journal Square station is a new parking garage at 2854 John F. Kennedy Boulevard, Jersey City, NJ that has offered free parking (up to 12 hours) for the past two days. I asked the manager when this promotion will end and he did not know. Just drive by and if you see the "free parking" sign out, enter the garage on Sip Avenue. The normal rate is $8.00 for up to 24 hours. I left my car overnight, and walked a block to my hotel, Ramada Limited, Jersey City. FREE PARKING..... Sweet :)

  11. Dahammer, I have to say ... with your great attitude and exuberant personality, I can't believe you ever get a bad room!!!

well, I finally came clean and admitted to staying at the Holland Motor Lodge!!!! The room was ok, and the Hotel was fine, as long as you didn't leave your room :) Maybe this should be a new topic, "Rooms from H***" what do you think?

One time I had to travel to Wyalusing, PA a one stop light town on a scenic stretch of Pennsylvania two lane blacktop, Route 6 not too far from the Grand Canyon of PA near Wellsboro. (Watch your speed in Lacyville, PA I got pulled over and ticketed by the Chief of Police) Decided to try the Wyalusing Hotel in town, the hotel was built in the 1920's and had the original spring mattress. Almost like the hotel in the HBO series "Deadwood" :) Also, I was unable to dial out through the antiquated phone system (kind of like the one in the TV show "Green Acres") so I checked out and drove 12 miles to stay in a Comfort Inn near Towanda.

  12. the hotels on Rt. 1&9 are scary, and I've stayed at the Holland Motor Lodge!!! :)

The property started out in the 1920's as an apartment building and was converted about 5 years ago to a hotel, not sure how long it has been part of Ramada. The rooms also have mini-refrigerators and microwave ovens. My first room had a broken air-conditioner so I was moved to a new room where the AC worked fine. Both rooms were decent in size and clean. One of the unusual features of this hotel is a rooftop deck above the 5th floor. Not spectacular views, but with your significant other :) and a cooler of adult beverages, a good spot to watch the sun's rays play off the NYC skyline. Dining options in the area are pretty limited, mostly take out or delivery. Hoboken and all the restaurants on Washington Ave beckon, just a short ride away via PATH.
