Hotwire Hotel: help on location

We are a family of 5 taking our first trip to New York March 25-29. I have been unable to find anything any where near reasonably priced for these dates. We would need 2 rooms and at over $300 a night a piece that is more than we have budgeted. Is there an area anyone could recomend that is not in Manhattan but that we could easily commute by train or subway from and that would be more reasonably priced?

What is your budget per nite per room for this trip? Will you have a car? If so, from which direction will you be arriving? Will you be flying in? If so, which airport?

We will be coming in from Washington or Philadelphia either train or bus, not yet sure which. We talked about renting a car but have been told by many that there is not much reason to do so. We would like to keep it under $400 per night for the 2 rooms. We looked at several 2 bedroom condos but I am a little worried about doing that. We will fly out from MacArthur on Saturday. Any help would be appreciated.

The best location is the waterfront area in Jersey City, but there is nothing there affordable for your dates.

I think you can get the Sheraton Meadowlands for under $100/nite per room, and the hotel has a shuttle which will take you to the train (or bus??) to get into the city. Not the most convenient of situations, but relatively speaking the price is good.

You could also stay directly in Manhattan at what i believe is the Holiday Inn Midtown for $225/nite per room... just over your budget but gives you the ability to stay directly in the city itself.

Is any of the above interestin?

I might have one other idea depending upon the make-up of your group... how many adults and how many children? What is the age of the oldest child?

There are my husband, myself, my son and his wife and my 20year old son. The one in mid town might be of interest.

Since everyone is of adult age, you could also book 3 private bath rooms at The Pod for $127/nite each room. It is a budget hotel, the rooms are small, but it's clean, has a good location, and gets very good reviews.

Let us know your thoughts and we'll proceed in whichever direction you'd like.

I checked the POD and they have no availability for those dates. Any other suggestions?

That's too bad, as it was 'available' last nite when i posted. If you could get The Pod is that something that you'd be interested in? (as i think i can find a way to make it work)

If not, is SPLITTING YOUR PRICELINE BID an option?

I have made a reservation through VRBO in Brooklyn. All money was done with credit card and it is registered with VRBO for the Home away rent with confidence guarantee. I have a friend that has a relative in New Jersey that went by this weekend and everything is good.
