ipegleg
South of the mall should be fine for seeing the tourists sites. I'd put it on par or even a bit better than capital hill for site seeing. There are other Hotel locations that would save you more per night, but you'll have to Metro into town. Some will offer free parking. It just depends if you want to be in town or just out of town or within shuttle/metro of town. Crystal city/National Airport is close in and Alexandria is out a bit further. Many folks have been getting the Courtyard Marriott Pentagon South in Alexandria for about $45 a night but there is not much going on near the hotel. They do offer a free shuttle to the Pentagon City metro though. For Dining and trendy restaurants you'll need to go north of the mall, but its a short ride on metro or a local bus. The Red busses (DC Connector) are set up for tourists and run the tourist route North and South at 7th street and East to West along the mall I believe. http://www.wmata.com/metrobus/dc_circulator.cfmA couple of tips that come to mind:- You can eat lunch in House or Senate office buildings. (House Rayburn bldg is good) Quite often you see representatives.- Expect allot of walking. Cabs are relatively cheap. Take one for the return if you completly wear yourself down. - Tripadvisor has great tips/ratings on attractions/hotels/sites- If the weather is nice, bikes are rented from the Old Post Office Pavilion (12'th st between Constitution and Pennsylvania ave.)- The "Entertainment Book" has coupons for the bikes and many other things such as 2/1 deals at restaurants. I'll buy one if I'm visiting another city for a week. You can get them on Ebay for about $20-25 or buy one directly using links from this site (they get some kick back from the sale and keeps the board running)- A cheap, quick tour that allot of people miss is the Mint. You can see money being printed and you can buy sheets of uncut bills. Its located at 14'th and independence, next to the Holocaust Museum. The tour lasts about 45minutes and is free. Some times of the year tickets are required.- Nightlife will be more the convention center area OR better yet Adams Morgan. Great ethnic foods.- Parking will probably set you back about $20 a day! You could park at the National Airport ECONOMY (other lots are much more expensive) parking and catch the free shuttle to Metro if you won't be needing your car for 2 or 4 days. This lot is fairly reasonable at $10 a day will save you a few dollars, but you'll have to metro there and back. (about $1.50 each way) Best of Luck and free to post any questions you have.
