What I would suggest considering is staying in the burbs, then driving to the nearest Metra Rail station (metrarail.com) and then take the train into the city. The Metra trains are two levels (similar to Amtrak) and are quite nice. I would definitely not stay near Midway, as there's little around the airport and not much to do right nearby.

The 3* Evanston/Skokie would possibly be the Doubletree or Holiday Inn Skokie; the Holiday Inn Skokie was - I believe - recently renovated, but the hotel previously got some pretty negative reviews (it still gets rather mixed reviews.)

I would rather suggest the 3.5* Northbrook, with fitness, restaurant, business, internet, pool. This listing has not yet been ID'd/reported to the board, but has been recommended by 95% of HOTWIRE customers with a 4.5* rating. One guess is that this may be the new Sheraton Northbrook, but it may be something else. The Northbrook area hotels would also be not far from a couple of different Metra stations.

There are also some fun family activities in the North burbs, such as Long Grove Confectionery (and Long Grove in general is very nice) and the Chicago Botanic Garden. Homer's in Wilmette is also great for ice cream.

Note that rates are really only expensive for the first 2 nites of your stay... the last 2 nites are much more reasonably priced. If you're willing to SPLITTING YOUR PRICELINE BID, you could stay in the suburbs for the first 2 nites of your stay and then change hotels and stay in the more convenient downtown area for the last 2 nites of your stay.
