I am looking at a stay from 21st May to 25th May (memorial weekend)

I am down to 2 options I think

1st 4.5 $106 Looks like the intercontinental

(amenities Business fitness restaurant and high speed intenet)

2cd 4 star

$109 Boutique Business fitness restaurant and high speed intenet

I think this is the hotel monaco

This is my 1st time in chicago and its a special birthday for someone so which would you go for hmmm.

Tripadvisor is positive about both but monaco rates in top 10

The 4.5* would appear to be a match for the Intercontinental, while the 4* would appear to be the Monaco (and the 4* also has a 4.5/5 tripadvisor rating).

Personally, while I do like the Intercontinental, for a Birthday party, I'd rather go for the potential Monaco.

I have not stayed at the InterContinental, but I've stayed at the Monaco twice, and have to think that it's the more personal of the two with the more endearing staff. I too would go for the Monaco for a special occasion. In fact, I stayed there the weekend of my engagement.

Just wanted to get back to you both and thank you for your help.

I'm afraid I still couldn't make up my mind between the two. From your advice i love the look and sound of the Monaco and that kind of turned me off the intercontinental.

Unfortunately it looked like I could only get a king bed rather than the twin I was hoping for there so I have now provisionally booked another hotel for the moment. It's a lot more expensive than the hotwire option but I suppose some times it's better to just know that someone is going to be happy for a few days.

Thanks again and I will update if I book through hotwire again

You can check travelzoo to see if any of the specials there work for you.

http://hotels.travelzoo.com/chicago-hotels/

The Monaco is on special there for $119/night including valet parking, but it appears that they only have a deluxe king room available. When checking the website, the only day they don't have the queen queen room is the Saturday night. So you may call the hotel and see if they can do anything about it or have any suggestions. Of course if you can't, you can always book three different reservations and just be one night without a queen queen room (and maybe get a rollaway for the Saturday night...$25 surcharge). By this I mean:

Reservation for 21-23 in queen queen room

Reservation for 23-24 in King room

reservation for 24-25 in queen queen room

These reservations are completely cancelable also without penalty.
