Im confused because I read other posts, others ask what hotel but they never post if they were right or wrong about the hotel. I need to book very soon. I already have my airfare and have for some time. We just like to go to a safe place and sleep. We are out of the hotel 99.5% of the time but I don't want to have to worry about the area.

Rates are not high for these dates and depending upon your budget i think you may be looking to cut corners in the wrong area.

Have you been to Vegas before? What is the purpose of this trip? Will you be 'cainso hopping' on the strip, downtown, touring outside the city?

What is your maximum budget for this stay?

2,5* Near strip west is probably a courtyard room at Palace Station. These rooms are in a low-rise building and Motel 6 quality, but they are all non-smoking.

2* downtown is either El Cortez (the tower rooms are ok, but they will probably assign you one of their dreaded "Vintage Rooms", very tiny and smoky accomodations over the casino, accessible only by stairs) or Gold Spike.

Spend a couple of bucks more, I wouldn't let my mother-in-law staying in either of them.

Thank you very much for your reply, I figured the Palace station one. The downtown hotels confused me. I think Im just going to not go with the unknown factor and purchase directly where I know the name of the hotel. I don't want to stay at the El Cortez. We love downtown and have stayed there the past 2 times we went to Vegas. (about 6 times all together for my husband and I). Sites say the Cortez is ok, and the area is not bad but it looked really shady to me and I refused to walk down there.

Funny tho, we stayed at the Gold Spike last year because we had our airline tickets way in advance and figured we would be ok with getting a hotel but we happened to fall on some Nascar event week and we couldn't get any room so the Spike was it.

It was roughing it mostly. Small rooms, all smoking, althought it said non smoking. We did not mind the atmosphere, we did not stay at the hotel except to sleep, we felt safe. Our biggest complaint was that they were behind in cleaning rooms and checkouts, so their check in I believe was at 4PM, but we could not get a room until after 6PM and they DO NOT hold your luggage anywhere...so we had to tote it around.

The people were friendly, but no help with anything like luggage and the cleaning service left a little to be desired. We stayed 6 nights and had to track down the cleaning crew to get towels. But the water was unbelievably pressurized..I thought I might lose the back of my head a few times, and it was hot. I bring my own hair dryer and it suited our needs at a minimum. In a pinch, I would consider it. But only after I exhausted all other options.
