New to Priceline, need help

Hello,

While I've purchased air/hotel package deals on Yahoo! Travel, I've never used any of the popular discount airfare web sites.

I want to name my own fare, but am I shooting myself in the foot? Also, I didn't know you could bid on tickets on Priceline. How does that work?

ITINERARY INFO

Depart

Aug. 10, evening, from OAK, SFO or SJC to OGG (arrival next morning)

Return

Aug. 20, evening, from OGG to OAK, SFO or SJC (arrival next morning)

No hotel needed except for last two nights. I have a timeshare for a week, 8/11 - 8/18.

Tickets neeed: 3 round trip, coach (ideally on Delta, but will fly the airline with lowest price)

Thanks for your help,

Welcome to BetterBidding!

A few things first...

When bidding on an airfare ticket, not only can you not choose the airline (so don't necessarily hope for Delta) but you also can't choose the schedule. Your flight can depart as early as 6am but won't depart later than 10pm. As well, you agree to accept up to one layover for your trip. Are these conditions you're willing to accept?

If so, what is the cheapest fare you're able to find for this itinerary? What is the base fare and how much of that is taxes/fees?

When you use priceline for airfare and have a timeshare reservation, you either have to shoot for days before and after your 7 night timeshare interval and be willing to pick up a hotel room at the beginning or end and have a little longer vacation or pick your dates such that it is possible that the flight times will cut into your timeshare interval a little bit. Usually you have to leave pretty early on check out day anyhow, so an early flight out isn't a big deal. You could find yourself needing to find something to do with yourself and somewhere to put your stuff for the day if you get a late flight.

On your arrival day, you have to accept that you may arrive late and lose that day. Or you can arrive the day before and get a hotel room. Hotels are expensive on Maui, though.

I have booked a number of airfares to Hawaii and have tried to use priceline for it but was never able to get a great price. I ended up booking directly every time. There are some markets priceline just doesn't work well for. I don't quite understand it as there have to be empty seats going to Hawaii, too.

Thanks everyone.

I found an airfare sub-$600 for all three of us via Aloha airlines. We were even able to buy a few activities including getting leis for all of us, luggage carted and escorted to cab, etc. We're coming a day early -- got a hotel for $86/night-- and staying three extra days -- same hotel. Times were good and we're flying out of Oakland.

Expedia: air tickets, events

hot Wire: hotel

Have a wonderful summer everyone!

Aloha,

e :)
