Hotwire Hotel: 3* New York City (Midtown Central) Wellington Hotel

Any suggestions on how I can find rooms that would fit a family of 4 in Manhattan the week Monday March 30th until Sunday April 5th?

I'm considering Hot.wire, but I have also looked into an apartment rental. Anyway, it seems to be pricey (not surprisingly really). Seems that hotel rooms outside Hotwire/apartment rental would start around US$250. An apartment rental might be cheaper but not much.

Any suggestions on how to proceed? Are there any known good delas/hotels where I would get good room for 4 people. Of course the optimal would be 2 rooms but highly unlikely. So what am I guaranteed when I book for 4 on Hotwire? 1 bed, 2 beds, 1 double and 1 single where 3 sleeps in one king? Or what?

If Hot.wire doesn't seem to give me the secure outcome I guess I need to go for an apartment rental and look at staying outside the most popular areas.

Hot.wire would be the best choice, as you can indicate the amount of people in the party, which should result in bedding (may be 1 + sofa, 1 + rollaway or 2) for the entire party. PRICELINE EXPRESS does sometimes offer bed choice on listings, although the bed choice may not include 2 beds (may just be variations on 1 bed.)

What would be your desired budget per night for this stay? Which zones would be acceptable? If you are seeing a particular HOTWIRE listing that you would like us to try to ID, please provide the zone, star rating, price per night and full list of amenities showing with the listing.

I'll add to the above that while s/he may still be your baby... your 20 year old will be viewed as an adult by most hotels. ;) (although if you choose to list him/her as a child for the search in hopes that 2adults/2children may be cheaper than search 3adults/1child that is your prerogative)

Your options will mostly come down to your budget, so let's start there (as well as the minimum star rating you're willing to accept), and we'll take it from there.

Since we're staying 6 nights I assume this will get pricey anyway, but I guess these are my criterias:

- Area....would say East or west midtown Manhattan and everything to the south on Manhattan. I haven't really thought of Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Jersey etc as options (should I?).

- 3 stars and above

- Clean nice rooms with ok sleeping conditions (rollerbeds are ok....sleeping 3 in a twin is not so ok).

- My experience tells me that I seldom use extra facilities like gyms, pools etc in New York. So that's really not that important.

- THe familiy is quite adcited to Wifi though unfortunately

- And yes....my 20 y.o. will be listed as adult unless there is a good reason not to (price/discounts etc)

When: March 30 -> Apr 5th

Adults 2

1 x 20 y.o (should be added to adults above making it 3 in total)

1 x 16 y.o.

I guess I should just start searching and see what pops up....then come back here for id.

Searching HOTWIRE for 3adults/1child the only option i see under $200/nite is what looks to be the Holiday Inn Express New York - Manhattan West Side for $190/nite. This property does include breakfast, but it's also a bit far west, i wouldn't necessarily consider it to be convenient.

If you can stretch your budget to $233/nite there is a 4* hotel in the ESB zone for $233/nite, which i'm guessing may be a new amenity set for the Affinia Dumont or the Affinia Shelburne, but i'm not certain.

Just to take a peak, searching for 2adults/2chidlren, i don't see a significant drop in rates nor any other hotel that stands out as being an incredible deal.

Is anything above of interest?

Thanks a lot!

Both these are of interest, and I think I can stretch the budget for the more expensive one (since I don't have a definitive budget) if you think it's worth the difference. My wi uaranteefe loves to eat breakfast at the hotel though.

My concern is what I will get from those deals booking for 3 adults and 1 child?

1) Could we be given a room with one double and one single and told 3 can sleep in a king bed? Or will we be guaranteed at least two double beds or as a minimum 1 double, 1 single and a rollerbed...and guaranteed not having to pay extra since we're 4 if that's what we booked? (Some years back I had to pay extra at Aria in Las Vegas for rollerbed when I booked for 3 and got two single beds).

2) How do I find/identify these two deals mentioned above on Hotwire?

Link to comment

I have heard of maybe 2 incidents (out of tens of thousands of hotel wins) of a hotel claiming that a King bed can accommodate 3 people, for which i think you would have a very good case to complain to HOTWIRE (but i think it would not be necessary to do so)

On the otherhand, industry standard is that a double bed can accommodate two people, so the hotel would be within their right/terms if you were given a room with two double beds for four people. Single bed are actually very rare in the States, and in fact i don't think the Aria has single sized beds... my guess is that you were assigned a room with two double beds and that is why you needed to pay extra for the rollaway at that property.

Actually I think the Aria-incident was a little bit different when I think about it. I think there were only one king in the room. We were 3 of which 2 of them were my kids...at that time aged around 14 and 18. I had booked for all 3 of us but had to pay extra for the rollerbed. Similar thing happened with Hotwire at "The Orlando" in Hollywood on the same trip.

Maybe this won't be an issue now searching for 4 ppl of which 3 are adults.

BTW: How do I find those offers you referred to?

Link to comment

If you don't receive enough bedding for everyone in your group then call HOTWIRE to have them work something out with the hotel. When HOTWIRE was first introduced, just like PRICELINE, they only offered double occupancy... maybe (5 years ago??) they started to allow up to quad occupancy, and there were a lot of issues as you described as hotels needed to be made aware of (or reminded ;) ) of the new feature and that they had to adjust their inventory/pricing to account for the possibility of quad occupancy... issues such as the one(s) you describe do have happen from time to time, but it's not that common anymore.

Which of the two previous offers i referenced are interested in?

You may see a slightly different price, but when I search for 3a/1c, I'm seeing:

4* ESB $220 Restaurant, Fitness, Smoke Free, Hi-Speed Internet, Business, Laundry, Pet Friendly

-- Not yet ID'd/reported to the board, but I'd guess a new amenity set for one of the Affinias (Shelburne or Dumont)

3* MSG-HK $185 Fitness, Complimentary Breakfast, Free Internet, Hi-Speed Internet, Business

-- Likely Holiday Inn Express West Side

I believe there are more amenities then what you have posted above as HOTWIRE has a new interface that does not show the complete set of amenities unless you click thru a few extra links.

If you repeat your search using our BiddingHelper.com tool... use the HOTWIRE EASY VIEW tab and then click the GREEN BUTTON next to this listing, do you see more amenities then what you have listed above? (copy/pasting the amenities from there also makes it easier for us to research your stay) Using this method, below is the full list of amenities i'm seeing for the 4 star hotel in this zone when searching for your dates:

Free Internet

Pet Friendly

Fitness

Restaurant

Business

Laundry

Hi-Speed Internet

Blind Accessible

Deaf Accessible

Travel Accessible

Room Accessible

Bathroom Accessible

Handicapped Parking

Roll-in Shower

... if this is what you're seeing, the Crowne Plaza Times Square Manhattan would be my guess for this one.

For various reasons I haven't booked my stay yet and it's getting close to the date. Can you give me one or a few suggestions from my previous preferences? ( I guess those first recommendations have changed to others now).

- Area....would say East or west midtown Manhattan and everything to the south on Manhattan.

- 3 stars and above

- Clean nice rooms with ok sleeping conditions (rollerbeds are ok....sleeping 3 in a twin is not so ok).

- My experience tells me that I seldom use extra facilities like gyms, pools etc in New York. So that's really not that important.

- THe familiy is quite addicted to Wifi though unfortunately

When: March 30 -> Apr 5th

4 Adults staying in same room

Price +/- $200

Unfortunately, there is not much on Hot.wire in Midtown -

I'm seeing a 3* MTC for $177 w/restaurant, business, internet. This listing has not yet been ID'd/reported to the board, but I'm guessing either the Wellington has been upgraded or this is a new amenity set for the Ameritania.

I'm also seeing a 3* Chelsea for $193 w/Restaurant, Fitness, Free Internet, Hi-Speed Internet, Business, Laundry, Blind Accessible, Deaf Accessible, Travel Accessible, Room Accessible, Bathroom Accessible, Handicapped Parking, Roll-in Shower, Pet Friendly. This listing has not yet been ID'd/reported to the board, but a new amenity set for the Holiday Inn 6th Ave would be a definite possibility.

Would either of these options be of interest?

You may see slightly different prices when searching.

Thanks for those. Absolutely interesting.

What would be your suggestions if I were to step up the price a little bit?

BTW: Problems seeing the Chelsea one. I see one 3* for Chelsea around $219/223 though.

I can see in the posts that you use different parameters when you search. How many adults/children did you search for?

It might be that you're searching with a different number of guests compared to AaronJB.

Hmmm...I'm using mostly 4 adults since it seems 3+1 child doesn't make a difference(?). Couldn't find Chelsea htl at that price with 3+1 either. Could the web-interface tool used make that much difference? (Biddinghelper:Hotwire easy view VS Biddinghelper:Hotwire VS normal Hotwire)

Any updated suggestions for same (+/-$200) or for slightly higher price?

For example I'm seeing one for Times Square: 4adults, March 30th-April5th

Times Square - Theater District $223 pr night

FULL AMENITIES: Pet friendly, Smoke-free rooms, Fitness center, Restaurant(s), Business center, Internet access, Accessible for visually impaired, In-room accessibility, Wheelchair accessible, Accessible bathroom, Accessible parking

It does/can make a difference on the inventory listings, and even if the same hotel offered, the price could be different for 4adults vs. 3adults/1child (with the rate for the child as the 4th guest in the room being cheaper than the rate for the 4th guest in the room being an adult). Please always let us know if you don't use the standard search for two adults.

Best guess would be Holiday Inn 6th Ave.

Times Square - Theater District $223 pr night

Please always include the star rating for the hotel you ask about. I can see a 3* with the same amenities and price. best guess for that would be Paramount Hotel Times Square New York.
