godspeedhot,

Keep in mind that hotels try to use the opaque suppliers to sell rooms at a discount that they don't think they would otherwise be able to fill on their own. Hotels in NYC, especially those in Times Square, know that they will (or should) be able to sell most or all of their rooms on their own and at a hefty premium. So from their point of view, why give deeply discounted inventory to the opaque suppliers when they can sell the room on their own at a premium? (and even if bookings are lower then expected at the moment, why offer a deep discount 5+ months in advance of what may be the busiest nite of the year for them... they would rather take the risk of holding on to the room and hope of selling it at full price down the road, or they may figure if they have to (which they may very well not need to) they can lower the price closer to New Years Eve).

Using MAPS and HOTELS.com (you can search for '1 mile from Times Square') what is the best rate you're able to find for a 4* hotel?

About $600-700 per night

So as per above, from the hotel's perspective, if it's your busiest nite of the year and you currently expect that you can sell-out (or near sell-out) at rates of $600-$700... why offer rooms thru the opaque sides of PRICELINE and/or HOTWIRE at half off?

I think you can get a 4* hotel closer to $300 outside of the Times Square zone OR PRICELINE and HOTWIRE have 4* offerings in the mid-$400's.

Yes, it's the most expensive time in New York. Right now, there are deals for other 4* hotels on HOTWIRE that aren't nearly as high, that's why I was asking. Periodically people will ask me for advice about staying in NYC over New Year's eve, so this information comes in handy. I'll refer anyone who's serious to this board. Thanks.
