Priceline Hotel: 4* in Financial or 3.5* in Fishermans Wharf or try USE/USW

This site is great and I am about to use the links on the site to PRICELINE a hotel for my first trip to San Francisco for vacation.

I always use the site for tips and reviews but I have yet to decide if my logic on San Francisco is sound.

Typically I try to get the best 4* deal when I book which lead me to think the Financial District is where I needed to focus, but it appears the 3.5* in Fishermans Wharf might not be the worst and I will more than likley get the best deal there. To add to my debate while reading through the forums I saw that many people try for USE or USW first then settle on the Financial District. Is USE and USW superioir to the Financial District and should I even be considering the Wharf hotels? Any advice would be appreciated.

It all depends on what's important to you.

FW is, in general, touristy. FD is not, but it is very quiet on the weekends. And USE/USW is a compromise between the two, and central to boot. All of these zones have decent public transportation, thought FW is farther away and doesn't have direct access to BART, if you care about that. BART is a good way to get from the airport, for example, unless you have a small group and a cab is equally cost effective.

If price is really important to you and all these zones sound OK, utilize the many rebidding zones available in SF, roll the dice and see where you end up. If you really want one area, use the rebid zones you can and stay specific.

Please let us know where you end up, and how you got there.

USE and USW are in the middle of a busy area in San Francisco, so street noise may be a concern. Some hotels in USW are close to the Tenderloin, which I've heard isn't a nice area. Also, priceline's USW zone includes Nob Hill which could require walking uphill to get to your hotel. Some people include SOMA zone but some of the hotels are a bit south of the main attractions of San Francisco. The 4* hotels in FD consistently receive good reviews, and since it is quiet at night street noise isn't much of a concern. FD is my first choice when bidding in San Francisco, followed by USE, then FW.
