Priceline Hotel: area for pre cruise stay?

We fly in late & need to grab a bite, sleep, shower & head to the ship the next morning. Proximity to a Catholic Church in the morning for Mass & a trolley ride through Old San Juan would be ideal but are not required.

Can I pick any areas other than San Juan proper to bid w/o drastically increasing our travel time & costs to the port?

Also if I bid on a resort, are the resort fees per person? It seems dumb to me to pay $20 pp if we won't have time to use the amenities. Should I just stick with plain hotels?

Please follow-up your previous Priceline Atlantic City thread with whatever you ended up doing for that stay... then reply to this thread indicating which pier you leave from (there are two in San Juan) and the dates of your stay, we'll then have a look at and comment on your stay.

If you're trying to keep travel expenses to a minimum the San Juan zone is the best (and for the most part the only zone recommend for pre-cruise stays). However, note that the PRICELINE zone covers much more ground than just Old San Juan, so you'll need to be open to staying anywhere within the shaded boundaries of the zone. If this isn't acceptable then you can try HOTWIRE where you may be able to take a guess as to the hotel you will receive, and thus guess as to the location as well, but no guarantees you'll guess correctly.

I'll add that the only hotel directly in San Juan which comes up often is the Sheraton Old San Juan, so while this may be the hotel you ultimately receive, odds favor that you'll more likely end up at a different property and in a different section of the zone.

Let us know how you'd like to proceed, along with the dates of your stay and expected budget, and we'll take it from there.

What star levels have resort fees in Puerto Rico & how much are they? I thought I read something about 11% but 11% of what, the price you paid on priceline, the rack rate or something else? Is it 11% of the room or per person?

We need a room for 1 night pre-cruise on a Saturday in mid-March.

TIA

If i recall correctly, there is a hotel tax of 11% in San Juan, and then if the hotel has a casino there is an additional 11% tax... this may be the 'resort' fee that you're referring to. The tax is charged per room and would be somewhat close to the rate you paid (but not exact)

Last August we bid on priceline and got the Sheraton Old San Juan. Our 11% tax was already included in what we paid PRICELINE. At check out we paid the 11% service fee. So obviously, the lower your winning bid, the lower your service charge. Our charge was about $10 a night since our winning bid was under $100 if I remember correctly. We did not leave a tip for the maid since I assume that is covered by the service fee.

This was a fabulous deal and the hotel was perfect for us. When we arrived they upgraded our room to water view on a high floor. I can only hope we will have this hotel as our winning bid when we do it again this August. Right now we could pay around $165 total per day with all fees for the dates we want - AAA rate. I want better. :)
