SadieK
(1) Already have a hotel reservation in NYC that can be cancelled, Park Lane @ Central Park South. Avg/night for current reservation is $339.(2) Arrive April 30th, 2014 and depart May 4th, 2014. Total of 4 nights.(3) 4 Star or up, with positive customer ratings.(4) Hoping to beat current reservation at $340/night, so max is probably $280. Willing to go $300 if it were a 5 star. Looking for best deal...like everyone else. :-)(5) Hoping to be close to subway.(6) Preferred zones are first choice of (2) Central Park South, next choices (16) Time Square - Theatre District or (12) Midtown West Never been to NYC, never used Priceline or Hotwire. Is what I'm looking for possible on Priceline? If it is possible, how do I even go about starting this process? Only interested if I get a deal better than what I have booked and since I've never been to NYC before I don't even know if what I have booked is decent. Thanks,Sadie K Link to comment
thereuare
Welcome to BetterBidding! We'll start with a few suggestions/comments... I'm currently seeing on HOTWIRE what i believe to be: Hilton Manhattan East for $219/nite Affinia Dumont for $305/nite The Hilton Manhattan East is not in one of the zones you mention above (it's in the Midtown East zone), a little further from the subway but certainly do-able (probably just under a 10 minute walk to Grand Central)... so the question is whether $100/nite savings is worth it vs. your current reservation? The Affinia Dumont is a great hotel with excellent reviews... but it's just about the same price as your current reservation so not sure which you would prefer. You could also try bidding on PRICELINE but there are some 'caveats' to discuss regarding the zones, as well as we would need to know your thoughts on the above in order to set a proper bidding strategy (ie- if the 4* MTE property would be acceptable we could substantially lower your maximum bid price to the low $200's) Let us know your thoughts and we'll advise accordingly. SadieK
Since we have never been to New York we have no real sense of distances and locations. I would say that ANY savings is worth it because that will help to pay for meals and things we would like to do. We know for sure we do NOT want to stay north of Central Park or off the island. So, the Hilton example below would probably be okay. We are aiming for a location that makes walking/subway easy. The Affinia Dumont isn't enough of a price drop based on its location. I would consider a $50 price drop in a location close to where we are now. Does that make sense? When you say you see what you 'think' is the Hilton is that one of the secret price ones on Hotwire? I would still be curious to hear your bidding suggestions. Thanks! Link to comment
thereuare
At the 4* level these zones tend to work well for the average user: MTE, MTW, TS, CPS, ESB, MSG, Chelsea ... with the following caveats: CPS - had the Hudson hotel which is well located but has notoriously small rooms MTE - some hotels can be up to a 15 minute walk to the subway Chelsea - can be a 10 minute walk to the subway, but is a 'happening' area right now with lots of clubs, restaurants, bars, cafes, boutiques, etc... so the 'not most convenient location' doesn't necessarily bother some based upon their needs and how 'lively' this zone is NOTE that the previous 4* hotel in the MTE zone is now priced at $250, but there is a new 4* hotel in the MTC for $202/nite which i'm guessing t be the Park Central: Free Internet Fitness Restaurant Business Laundry Hi-Speed Internet Room Accessible Bathroom Accessible So with the above noted, let us know which zone(s) you'd like to include in your PRICELINE bidding, and if we should lower your maximum bid to $202 in recognition of the 4* MTC property on HOTWIRE, and we'll advise accordingly. Romelle
www.tripadvisor.com has lots of reviews on the Park Lane. If you search (the white search box top right) on "park lane" you can see posts when it is mentioned on this site. The rates people are paying though are date specific, so don't take them very seriously. It seems to be showing as a 4* on TripAdvisor and a 4.5* on Hot.wire Romelle Link to comment
SadieK
It took some doing, but finally got a win! I'm quite pleased with this result. The Park Central seems very comparable to my existing reservation, but $135/night. All told I'll be saving over $500. Thanks for all the help! I'll be visiting Priceline again.Sadie K Link to comment

fprincipe
I followed the steps, closing the browser and using the link to re-access, but unfortunately Priceline keeps on recognising me, saying I have already bid and should wait. I have the same demand as the starter of this topics, but for diferent dates. I just do not know what I am doing wrong. Thanks. Link to comment
