mcallen
Hey all,This is my first time to New York City, and I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed with all of the hotel possibilities and locations... and I need some help. I'm wanting to get a 3.5 to 4 * hotel in a great location (possibly just outside of Times Square, Theater District, Central Park South, or lower end of Upper East Side). I don't want to be directly smack dab in the middle of Times Square with loads of crazy tourists, but I also don't want to be completely away from a good location either. We will be going to a few shows while we're there, as well as a few of the biggy tourist things. We typically like to hit up smaller food joints during the day.Can you guys help get me a good hotel? I'm willing to do either Priceline bidding using the permutation or getting it from Hotwire, whichever service gives the best hotel at the best value.I don't have a super strict budget since this is my first time to NYC and I'm not totally familiar with the prices for this time of the year. However, I'd prefer to stay in the lower 200's if possible. If paying a little more per night will get me a significantly better hotel, I'd be willing. Again, I'm flexible... but the cheaper I can get a high quality hotel, the better :)(and yes I'm using the Better Bidding links to HOTWIRE and PRICELINE)Thanks for the help!Matt Link to comment
AaronJB
Good afternoon. :)Please provide a follow-up for your prior Hotwire Naples thread (post in that thread what you decided to do for that stay.), then reply to this thread and we would be happy to provide suggestions for the NYC stay discussed above.Thank you for using the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches. mcallen
Hey Aaron,Thanks. I just replied to that thread. My bad... we actually weren't able to go on vacation to Naples. Work stuff got in the way. :) Link to comment
thereuare
I'm guessing a 4* is going to run you about $225-$250... i see a well reviewed 3.5* for $269/nite, which you could also try to beat via PRICELINE (alhtough you might not be able to since thus far this property has not yet been reported to the board thru that service)Given the above, would you first want to bid for a 4* up to your limit, then if rejected try for a 3.5*... OR would you goal be the least expensive 3.5* or better for this stay? We'll of course start lower, but given my guestimate above, how high would you want to bid at each star level? Thanks for using the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. mcallen
Hi,Thanks for the reply!Let's go with your suggestion and first try for the 4*. If we aren't able to get that, then let's try to get the least expensive 3.5* or higher. What were your thoughts about the areas that I mentioned and the details about what we're sort of "looking for"? Thanks for your help! Link to comment

mcallen
Hi,Let's go with the maximum bid that you mentioned ($250). If we could get a 4* for the pricing that you suggested, I would be happy with that.As far as areas go... I'm not totally familiar with NYC since I haven't been there before, but from what I've read, these areas sound good...Central Park SouthMidtown WestTimes Square - Theatre DistrictDo you think that I should add additional areas? Or would these suffice? Thanks! Link to comment
thereuare
I would include as many zones as you're willing to accept...At the 4* level MTE, MTW, CPS, TS and ESB all generally work well for the average user. Please take a look at these zones and confirm if you're fine with all of them and/or which ones you want to exclude, and we'll suggest a strategy for you to follow. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. If that doesn't work, then I would be willing to add Midtown East and try again. However, I'd prefer not to get the W Hotel in MTE. mcallen
Thanks a lot for your suggestion and plan of attack. I just tried it, but I was unsuccessful all the way up to the $250 mark. From your experience, are the 3.5* hotels just about the same in terms of quality as the 4* ones? My main reason for not adding MTE to the list was because I didn't want to get the W hotel in MTE. :) I would be willing to add MTE and try again. ORIf you think that the 3.5* hotels are about the same in terms of quality, and I would have better luck... let's do that. Thanks for the help! Link to comment
AaronJB
It varies and opinions may vary; some 3.5*'s may be better than 4*'s and vice versa. The issue with 3.5* in MTE is that the Hilton Manhattan East and Millennium UN are fairly far E in MTE and 3.5* CPS has the Hudson, which has quite small rooms. Would you be okay with either of these two possibilities?Thank you for using the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches. Link to comment
mcallen
Hi Aaron,Ok - based on your advice, let's go with 4* only. And I'll add MTE to the current list. By doing this, what would your plan of attack be? If I don't get a hotel again, after doing the abovementioned, then I'll do 3.5* with TS, CPS, MTW, ESBThanks! Link to comment

mcallen
Hi again...No luck. I was not able to get a hotel by using that plan of attack. There were two things that I noticed...1. you mentioned that there were 4 rebid zones. But when I checked, it looked like there were only 3. It looks like "Brooklyn" now has a 3.5* selection. What were the 4 rebid areas that you were referring to? 2. You wrote MTE in the plan, but that was the one I didn't want to get, so I switched it for MTW. :) What do you suggest I do now? It looks like "Brooklyn" now has a 3.5* selection. What were the 4 rebid areas that you were referring to?In the last 48 hours PRICELINE has added 3.5* bidding to Chelsea, which was the 'other' re-bid zone... Brooklyn has never been a re-bid zone at the 3.5* level.2. You wrote MTE in the plan, but that was the one I didn't want to get, so I switched it for MTW. :)My fault... a typo compounded by copy/paste.As far as where to go from here..I'm guessing your about $10-$20 from a win, possibly even bumping up to the 4* level. Your options come down to...1) trying again with a slightly higher bid price2) consider staying outside of NYC where you can commute into the city3) SPLITTING YOUR PRICELINE BID (although i don't think this will likely help much at the moment4) wait it out and try againYour thoughts? mcallen
Do you know what the 3.5* hotel is that Chelsea is listing? Also - I noticed a "Hell's Kitchen" area that is not currently on this forums' list of Priceline hotel locations in New York. Do you know what hotels are listed there as 3.5* and 4* ? I may want to decide to add that. Or would you recommend against staying in Hell's Kitchen. I don't know what that area is like. Thanks!Matt Link to comment
AaronJB
There's few hotels within in the boundaries of the Hell's Kitchen area (Ink48 and the Skyline are two that come to mind, there are probably - literally - a couple/few others - the Skyline would definitely not be 3.5* or 4* if it was participating), but there's been no hotels reported to the board in the zone, so there's no way to know which properties may be participating. No 3.5*'s have been reported to the board in Chelsea (yet.)The Hell's Kitchen area isn't too far from TS - while portions of it don't have much going on, there are some restaurant options and shops. Overall, the area itself isn't the most tourist-friendly, but on the flip side, it's not a terribly far walk to more popular areas.
