  1. Just returned from 8 nights at the Intercontinental Barclay for leisure travel (July 5-13, 2011). All-in-all, a decent hotel for the price ($160/night). The location was ideal, 3 blocks from subway at 51 & Lexington and the #6 Train took us to the majority of our destinations in Uptown and Downtown Manhattan. We discovered a few really good places to grab a quick bite within a couple blocks of the hotel: a pizza place with the most delicious "slices" and it was convenient late at night. It was 2 doors off the corner of 48th & Lexington; Grand Central Station has a lovely food market on street level and then down one level is a decent food court with a Magnolia Bakery in it. The rooms are very small albeit we did have two double beds in our room. The way the furniture is situated, it was difficult to make efficient use of the 2 chairs in the room. The lobby is beautiful, the front-end staff very professional and service oriented. The negatives, however: 6 out of 8 days we were awakened by the hotel cleaning staff chatting in the hallway. At one point they carried on for 15 minutes and I had to open the door and ask them to be quiet. On day #6 I reported to the front desk that we had been awakened 5 out of 6 mornings by the hallway chit-chat. The guy at the desk said he would deal with it promptly. On day #7 we were awakened yet again by hallway chatter. The room keys never seemed to work for longer than 2 days at a time. We continually had to get them reprogrammed or replaced (3 times during our stay). The website states rooms come with robes. We never saw one in 8 days. Almost daily we had to leave a note requesting shampoo/conditioner and regular coffee (not decaf). One day we did not leave a note and we returned to no shampoo/conditioner, no coffee and no coffee condiments. The shower supplies that were restocked were never consistent. Some days we had shampoo & no body wash, then one day we got 5 body wash & 1 shampoo. The carpet appeared to never have been vacuumed even one time during our stay. The flusher on the toilet dripped and left puddles of water on the floor on occasion (not every day). The bathroom is very tiny. The marble ledges to place bathroom items are very narrow (my guess is about 6-7") so not wide enough to place my bathroom bag without being concerned it would fall into the toilet or onto the floor. Only a very small double hook on the back of the bathroom door in which to hang clothes while showering. The bedding is feather (tic & duvet). My roommate is allergic and the bedding was changed promptly after placing a call via the "instant service" button, however I noticed my feather duvet had blood stains on it. We did not depart the hotel until later afternoon so checked our luggage with the bellhop. We tipped him $1 for each bag to store it, then again tipped $1 each bag when we picked up the bags. We took our bags to the curb ourself. The doormen lifted the luggage into the trunk and as we got into the car one doorman says to the other "Canadians!", which was my cue that he was expecting a tip for lifting the luggage into the trunk. We had just tipped $8 to the bellhops but after overhearing that comment I handed him $5.00. That soured my final impression of the staff at the Intercontinental Barclay. ~Brenda~ (Vancouver, BC)
  2. Thank you again. When I report back on the hotel, do I come to this thread to do so?
  3. Thank you. Using the PRICELINE link, I bid as instructed. At the $140 bid I received a counter-offer of $175. I rejected it and continued bidding in $5 increments. My bid was accepted at $160/night for the Intercontinental The Barclay. I'll be sure to report back on the hotel after my trip. Thank you so very much for all of your assistance. I truly appreciate it.
  4. Thank you very much. I did as instructed for 4* MTE & ESB bidding up to $130 and all were rejected. I am having reservations about Chelsea. I googled 4* Priceline hotels in Chelsea and the Trip Advisor reports of the Gansevoort kinda turned me off. If I select 4* Chelsea my assumption is that I could very well end up at the Gansevoort correct? Do you know what 4* hotels people are winning in the Chelsea area? As well, could I correctly assume a 4* would have air conditioning? Thank you.
  5. Not really. I'd like to keep it around $200/night (taxes etc can be on top of that) so would consider ESB & MTE if Chelsea wasn't accepted. Yes, I would prefer to try for a 4* up to my limit first, then if rejected would move down to a 3.5*. Least expensive 3.5* is not my goal. No reason for avoiding, except earlier in the thread, for what I am looking to experience in NYC, Chelsea, ESB & MTE were recommended in that order. I do not want to be in the area of Times Square, I do want to be within walking distance of "neighbourhoody" type areas (like the feeling I get in Greenwich Village and Tribeca, although I understand there isn't much for hotel offerings in that area, hence the 3 areas I think would get me closest to that feeling). Absolutely!
  6. Hello, I am now ready to secure a hotel. Can you please help me? I am looking at these areas, in order of preference, Chelsea; Empire State Bldg; Mid-town East. I would like a minimum of 3.5 stars and would pay up to $200/night for a 4 star. We will be in NYC from July 5 to 13. Splitting a bid is also an option (but least preferable). Thank you very much.
  7. Thank you for all the added links. I have alot more reading to do on this site.... I'll be back when I have more questions. Thank you for the bid splitting link especially.
  8. Is it of any benefit to wait being that my arrival is 13 weeks away? Or, should I bid now and get something secured? I am happy to go with whatever you suggest. Thank you.
  9. Thank you very much for the links to the maps. The visual of how few hotels are in the area I was hoping to stay was an eye-opener and I will now readjust my thinking. I agree on the areas you have suggested: Chelsea and ESB being optimal and then MTE. I also agree about the Marcel not meeting my 3.5* expectations. I do appreciate your assistance. I am easily frustrated by travel planning and seeing there are "experts" willing to assist makes it less stressful. Thank you again. When I make my purchase I will ensure to use the links provided and report back on my purchase.
  10. Hello, I am having a bit of difficulty with the map and ascertaining what area I should stay in. I have only visited NYC once before and stayed in LoHo and liked it. I am partial to the areas around Union Square Park, Greenwich Village, Tribeca. Are these areas considered Midtown? I am looking for minimum 3.5 stars and would like to stay around $150/night if possible. Must have in-room A/C. Otherwise, we're flexible as far as amenities go (don't need a pool, gym, etc.). I did find the Marcel @ Gramercy on Hotwire for $162/night. It's on E. 24th which looks to be walkable to Union Square Park area. Is it? Aside from the areas mentioned above what are other areas I could look at that would offer lots to do day & night (ie: shops, restaurants) (not Times Square). Thank you very much. PS: I need to get my hands on a NYC map!
