FYI - Portland has an amazing public transportation system (I live here). Most places not near the max will have buses close by. Bus drivers are helpful, especially if you tell them you are not from here. Good luck on your searching!
I plan on getting a hotel late next year (too early to think about a bidding strategy) in new york city. I intend to stay for at least 5 nights. Is it better to try and get one room for the entire stay or only try for a few days at a time? I'm fine if I have to switch hotels (sounds fun!).
