  1. The Hyatt would be fine, especially for in the $50's. There is an "L" and subway station on State St, approximately 4-5 blocks from the Hyatt. I really don't think there's a hotel in the city that's far from any transportation. Even the hotels more towards the water (definitely a bit of a walk from the subway stations) that appear frequently on Priceline (3* River North/NMA Holiday Inn City Centre, 4* River North/NMA Sheraton.) are still near busses on Michigan Ave. Anything in the loop is not that far from a subway or "L" station, although you may not want to get the Hilton and Towers (4* Loop) on South Michigan Ave as I think (and others who have gotten it sometimes share the same opinion, some don't) that it is a bit far South and out-of-the-way, with not much around it. The best possible scenario would be to get the Hilton Garden Inn on Hotwire (a subway station is directly outside, and it's in a great location), but that's difficult because a few things on Hotwire look like the Hilton Garden Inn (same amenities/zone), so there's no guarantee.
  2. Huh, I didn't know the marathon was the 22nd. For some reason I thought it was always around the 15th. Anyways, from looking at the rates for those dates, hotels already have rates sky-high in preparation for the inevitable sell-outs (some hotels already appear to be booked up) that will happen that weekend. There's currently what appears (no guarantees) to be one of the Club Quarters Hotels (no guarantees) on Hotwire for $91, so you may want to try bidding for a 3 star loop for in the neighborhood of $75. There's also what appears to be the either the (formerly Omni) Ambassador East, Westin Michigan Ave or Drake for $107 on Hotwire (4 stars, Water Tower/North Michigan Ave, hi-speed internet/restaurant/fitness/business) - all of which are certainly very nice - although that would be North of where you'd want to be - close to shopping, not close to the race. I don't think anything will come up for a $55 4* bid for these dates. $85-90 is a possibility, but the fact that bidding would be occuring so far in advance (as well as a Saturday checkin, which is often rather difficult to get on Priceline) may mean no priceline inventory yet. You may want to stick with the travelodge for the 2 days and then if you stay in Chicago for the other 2 days, move to a different hotel further up towards shopping - it would not be a difficult move, as Chicago is easy to get around. That way, you'd be close to the race for 2 days and then would be close to shopping 2 days. Once the race is over, hotel rooms would also be cheaper.
  3. I've never tried renting a condo so I don't know how it all works, but location and price-wise, it looks good. Too bad there are no pics. If you stayed there, one of the Metra Electric stations would not be terribly far, so you could take that for $1.85 instead of a taxi in the neighborhood of $5-6 each way.
  4. Trying for the Hyatt McCormick up to a reasonable point this early on sounds like a good plan, especially if you need to be close by. I can't think of any other hotels in that area (there aren't many to begin with. as the majority of the city's hotels are in the loop or NMA area) that would be 4*, and I don't think I've ever seen another hotel in that area come up as a 4* win. As with anything Priceline or Hotwire, no guarantees, but the Hyatt is likely the only 4* in that area. However, I would not bid below 4* in the Greater Chicago area, as I believe the Holiday Inn Downtown (a Holiday Inn in the South Loop), which gets very mixed reviews and is in what many consider a not-so-great area, is also in that area is (I think) either 2.5* or 3. 3* Loop would possibly get you either of the Club Quarters hotels (small rooms, but fine locations) or the Allegro (a bit out-of-the-way in the West Loop, but wouldn't be a bad taxi ride, especially if you walked a few blocks East to State St.) I don't know what the 2* Loop hotel is, unless the Hotel Blake (formerly a Hyatt, now an independently owned hotel that gets mixed reviews) in the Printer's Row area has been downgraded from 2.5, but no guarantees there. 3* River North/North Michigan Ave area would put you on the North side of the river. These hotels include either of the city's nicer Holiday Inns (Merchandise Mart or City Center - the former more West, right on the North side of the River, the latter more East, by Navy Pier) or The Allerton (up Michigan Ave, just a few blocks South of Water Tower) Also, if you stayed downtown in the loop area, you could take the Metra electric line from one of the downtown stations to McCormick Place. I haven't done it myself, but here is the information on the Metra McCormick Place station: http://metrarail.com/Sched/me/mccormick.shtml Here are the two downtown stations: http://metrarail.com/Sched/me/van_buren.shtml http://metrarail.com/Sched/me/chicago_randolph.shtml It appears to be $1.85 each way. Just another option to consider, and it looks like the McCormick station would be right at McCormick. Let us know if you have any other questions at all, and we'll be happy to help. My email is [email protected].
  5. Hi! :) If you plan to be mostly at McCormick for your stay while the convention goes on, then I would recommend attempting to look for the Hyatt McCormick on Hotwire or trying for it on Priceline. Although I don't seem to be seeing it on Hotwire right now, maybe it will show up at a future date. If you plan to be spending at least a fair amount of time browsing around the city - and October is a very nice time to browse around Chicago, as it's not warm and not really cold yet - I would recommend considering one of the hotels in the loop, such as the Palmer House or the Chicago Hilton and Towers as, while not right at McCormick, would be a fairly short cab ride away from it. I don't know about the specific convention, but I often see shuttle busses going to McCormick from the Palmer House, as it's a big convention hotel. As for the possible Omni Ambassador East, while it's in a nice area, it would be a bit too far in my opinion, as it's a bit North of the Water Tower area. While there are definitely transit options from there to McCormick, it would be farther than going from the loop to McCormick Place, forcing you to leave earlier (if you had to be at McCormick early in the AM) and costing more (if you took a cab). Essentially, I'd recommend staying South of the River. On Hotwire, the best option that I currently see for 10-12 to 10-19/06 would be what *appears* (not guaranteed) to be the Hotel Monaco for $160 (4 star, Loop, Boutique/Restaurant/Fitness). If it is in fact the Monaco, it would be quite a savings over what the hotel currently is priced at for your dates. While it wouldn't be quite as close to McCormick as the Palmer, for example, the hotel's location right on the South side of the river would still be reasonable by cab from there to McCormick. Looking around the major travel sites, I don't see too many options, as prices seem sky-high for your dates. One option would be the Buckingham Athletic Club, which is a smaller hotel with a limited number of rooms. From the Hotels.com description: "Overlooking Lake Michigan, The Buckingham Athletic Club is quietly hidden between layers of financial strata on the 40th floor of the Chicago Stock Exchange building, an exclusive property that caters to corporate executives and entrepreneurial." The Buckingham Athletic Club is in the South Loop, and would not be a far cab ride to McCormick at all. It is $180 per night on Hotels.com or Expedia, and one of the least expensive loop regular rate options out there for your dates. There are only 21 rooms in the hotel, and the famed restaurant Everest is also in the same building (on the same floor, I believe). The Palmer House is $269 for your dates, which seems awfully high for that. Somewhat more reasonable (although you may want to read the reviews before considering it) is the Hard Rock on Michigan Ave, just South of the River, for $209 on Orbitz. The Hyatt seems very high at nearly $290. You may also want to consider bidding for a 4 star in the loop (Milenium Park, Loop, Grant Park area), as any of the potential 4 star MP/Loop/GP properties on Priceline (see the list on this site) would be in a good location for a cab ride to McCormick - a more reasonable distance than some of the River North/North Michigan Ave potential hotels. The only problem is that you may have difficulty winning a bid this far in advance, not to mention for as many dates in a row. You may want to get a refundable reservation right now, then wait for something to come up down the road a bit on Hotwire or trying PL. Given that those are busy dates (I could be wrong, but I think the Chicago marathon happens around that time, as well), if you don't manage to get something else via PL or Hotwire, then you'd at least have something to fall back on. Based on the rates (and I could be off on this, but someone will correct me, hopefully), I would say you would have to start bidding at $91 for 4* Millennium Park, Loop & Grant Park Area and then go upwards in small amounts (by $5) Otherwise, the 4* Hotwire, which would hopefully (but not guaranteed) be the Monaco would be a fine choice.
  6. Wound up getting this hotel for visitors coming into town and was definitely nervous, as I've read the reviews and I wanted them to have a nice time. They ended up getting a very nice room and, from what I saw, it looked very nice. Would I consider this 4*, from what I saw? Probably not (it could maybe fit as 3* or Boutique), but I could definitely say the same thing about some of the other 4 stars downtown. Plus, the MK has a great location.
  7. Possibly Club Quarters Wacker/Michigan Ave.
  8. That hotel would likely be the Sheraton Towers, which is essentially across the street. I believe the Embassy Suites would likely come up with the Suite and Breakfast icons. The Embassy Suites rarely gets reported as a Hotwire win, and only once recently has someone reported getting it on Priceline.
  9. Got this for visiting family and, given the sharply varied reviews, was a little worried. However, upon arrival, they were actually given something of an upgrade to a 2-bed corner room which, based upon pictures I've seen and their opinions, was actually quite nice. Although I know this is an older hotel and rooms can probably vary pretty sharply, I might actually seek out this hotel in the future or, at least, if it comes up on PL, I won't be freaked. Family members stayed at 3 different hotels in three different, yet not particularly far apart, areas of the city - first night was at the Holiday Inn City Center, second night (non-PL) was at the Hilton Garden Inn (which they quite liked) and third night was at the Millenium Knickerbocker. They actually ended up loving the sampling of different places and, the different areas actually worked out well. It seemed difficult to get all three days together when I bid, due to the parade on Saturday (the middle day), but this actually worked out better and, when the family returns, they actually want to do something similar again. They were also quite happy that I got them an average night's cost of $83 (+tax). Goes to show, if you don't have a lot of baggage, spliting your bid in downtown Chicago is not a particularly bad idea, since the hotels in each of the two downtown zones are not *that* far from one another and the different locations will put you closer to various sites. Plus, if you're not that crazy about one hotel, you'll be in a different one the next night. Chicago's very easy to get around, too.
  10. Got this for visiting family. Regular rate on the hotel website was $189. Have gotten this hotel for the same family members on a prior visit and they liked it & definitely enjoy the area. They also like the hotel, as - despite being Priceline customers - they have been treated well here and always get 2 bed rooms (there seems to be a lot of 2 bed rooms in this HI.)
  11. My best guess would be the W Lakeshore.
  12. Thanks for sharing - very interesting story, and I hope you continue to share your PL experience. Have you had any good "upgrade" stories?
  13. Water Tower is maybe a 5-10 minute walk from the Omni, and it's a very pleasant walk. Even in the cold, I think it's still a very doable walk. The Omni is in a great area, with very nice restaurants (Edwardos Pizza a couple blocks West, PJ Clarkes a couple blocks South) and it's not far from Mag Mile shopping. There is also a subway station a few blocks away if you want to head downtown or North to Lincoln Park. I've stayed there, and thought the hotel itself was quite nice. Get snacks/drinks at the CVS a couple of blocks South on State.
  14. The Indigo's in a great area. Try Edwardo's Pizza down the street, and Chipotle a few blocks away on State. PJ Clarkes is also a nice restaurant on State nearby. If you need snacks, there's a Jewel, an Osco, a Walgreens, a CVS and Treasure Island within about a 4 block radius.
  15. First, what day(s) are you looking at and what zone is it in.
  16. There's been a couple of reports I've read about the Holiday Inn MM providing bad Priceline service, which is unfortunate. The HI City Center a few miles away still gets better reviews.
  17. It looks very much like the Hyatt is the $68 property for those dates, and $68 is not out of the ordinary for the Hyatt during the off-season, moreso in the Winter, after the first of the year. I've gotten 4-star properties for the 60's downtown, including the Sheraton a week or so ago on Priceline, and the Intercontinental for $68 Halloween weekend 2004.
  18. For that price, your best bet would be to bid for 3 stars River North/NMA, as you have the chance of either Holiday Inn or (although a very infrequent possibility) the Embassy Suites. You could also get the Allerton, however. You could also consider 4 star Loop (Palmer and Chicago Hilton & Towers, each w/pool), but for around $60, you're probably more likely to get the Hyatt, which does not have a pool. Either way, it's a bit too early (in my humble opinion) to bid. I'd wait till early Dec.
  19. There's no way to know what you'll get on Priceline, which is why it's often cheaper than Hotwire. Unless you can get the Sheraton for $65-90, I wouldn't consider it. I recently stayed there for $66 via a Priceline bid and while I was more than happy with it for that price, it should definitely not be considered a 4-star hotel. Room service is unbelievably outrageous (even for a hotel) and they charge you to use the fitness room. They charge you for just about everything. While the room was clean (if rather plain and sparse) and the bed was nice, the bathtub completely would not drain and noise from the water pipes was very loud. There was also a lot of hall noise. While the person at checkin was nice, the person at checkout (the in-room checkout wouldn't work) didn't seem to care less when we informed him that the bathtub wouldn't drain or that the in-room TV function wasn't working (not looking for a deal or anything, just wanted to inform them.) I love the area and especially the nearby grocery (Fox and Obel, which is beautiful and a great deal of fun to shop around), but the Sheraton is just not that great. Fine if you get it for a low rate, but I'd be very upset had I paid full price. The public areas of the Sheraton are very nice and most of the rooms offer nice views. However, while my room was clean, there have been a lot of complaints in online reviews about rooms looking ragged/dirty. And, despite the fact that the hotel makes a big deal about its "Sheraton Promise" for quality, the checkout experience was not very good. What are the exact dates you're looking for and your exact budget?
  20. Be prepared for a small room, as this was originally an older hotel (the Midland) and many of the rooms are on the small side (I'm guessing 250 square feet). However, I thought the hotel was very nice, and the bed was terrific, with a very nice staff who always went out of their way to greet me. The bath products are also excellent. Ask for a room facing South, if you can (along Adams). Not a spectacular view (there aren't any view rooms in the hotel really), but you may be able (depending where you are) see a partial Sears Tower view. Rooms alongside the West side of the building may get some noise from the "L". Many rooms face in towards a courtyard. Room service was a little pricey (although not as bad as the Sheraton in Chicago), but food was of excellent quality and looked professionally prepared, not like fast food. The lobby turns into a nightclub/bar in the evening, which is pretty wild to see.
  21. What appears to be the Hyatt Downtown is coming up for $97 on Hotwire and what appears to be the Hilton Chicago and Towers is coming up for $106. While obviously there is no guarantee that you would get either of these properties if you bid 4* Loop, these rates are fairly low. Given that, I think a bid of $79-81 would be reasonable for the loop. I'd bid $85-90 for NMA 4* Just my humble opinion.
  22. Without exact dates, I can't make specific recommendations, as prices vary sharply in Chicago, depending on date. However, hotels I'd consider romantic: Hotel Indigo, in the Gold Coast. Great neighborhood, near Michigan Ave. Lots of nice restaurants nearby. Talbott Hotel, just off Michigan Ave. Amalfi Swissotel. Maybe the Omni Ambassador East. Maybe either of the W's. There are a lot of nice hotels around the downtown besides these, but many of them are not what I'd call romantic.
  23. Here's a pretty exceptional deal for the Amalfi on Travelzoo.com - Go to this page: http://hotels.travelzoo.com/lodging-hotels/212808 And then go from there to the hotel website and follow the instructions (enter the promotional code in the box). Rate should be $129 a night, which is a pretty strong savings on a very nice, romantic hotel.
  24. <<1. 4*Magnificent mile-wacker dr Amenities are: Restaurant, finess, spa, internet, business customer favorite hotwire price $110.00 2. 4* Magnificent mile-loop fitness, internet, business hotwire price $141.00 3. 4* magnificent mile-north michigan ave-water tower-gold coast restaurant, internet hotwire price $202.00>> The first one is likely the Hyatt which, over the last few days, has changed its amenity listing on Hotwire and is now showing internet and spa along with the other three, which were previously the only amenities the property showed. If you mean just the loop area for the second one (Mag Mile and Loop are separate areas on Hotwire), then you are likely looking at the Hard Rock for the second one. The last one appears to be hiding some of the amenities, so it's difficult to make an exact guess there. Neither of the two hotels mentioned above as likely possibilities are particularly "romantic". Let me make a different suggestion - I'd recommend the Hotel Indigo, which is in the Gold Coast area. It's near the popular Rush St. restaurant/bar area, it's a little ways from the Water Tower shopping area, and the neighborhood is quite nice. The lake is only a few blocks away, so if you wanted to take a stroll along the lake, that would be easy. The hotel just opened last Summer, and is a newly remodeled property. The hotel is located in an area with a lot of beautiful homes/apartments, but the Division St. area is a block and a half South. There's also an Edwardo's pizza (which I think is quite good) half a block South. That would be a hotel that I would consider more quiet and romantic. If you wanted to stroll around Lincoln Park Zoo, that's a 10 minute walk directly North, through the residential area. Old Town is also not far. It's $169 on Travelocity for your dates. If you want to take a look at the hotel, the website is http://www.goldcoastchicagohotel.com/
  25. I was fooling around with Priceline, attempting to see if I could get anything for the following day for a very cheap price. Saturday checkins with Priceline in downtown Chicago are usually a problem.... ...but not this time. I gave Priceline a shot for $66 for a 4 star and it came back with the Sheraton. $66 is not only a vast savings over the hotel's regular rate, but it's substancially cheaper than the worst hotels in downtown Chicago. The Sheraton is in a wonderful area, just a few blocks from Navy Pier, a few blocks from Michigan Ave and not that far of a walk from downtown. Fox and Obel, a wonderful grocery store, is also a block or two away. Despite the low prices that I've gotten for hotels, I go in asking things like, "how would I feel had I paid full price?" Things started off fine enough. Check-in was going slowly (I've visited different chain hotels in the city and I've seen check-in go faster and the staff was still welcoming.), but thankfully, there weren't many people in line and there were plenty of staff checking in. The person who checked us in was very nice and, unlike some other hotels, not only was priceline not mentioned , the staff member told us about how they want every guest to be treated well and if there were any problems, to call them. I was going to try to see if I could pay for an upgrade, but didn't really have an "in" in the conversation. When I saw that we had a room on the 25th floor, I didn't really make an issue of it, as I figured we were far up anyway. We walked through the lobby, which was quite lovely, and went up to the floor. When we arrived, the door had been unlocked by the maid staff, who looked as if they'd just finished cleaning it (the cart was in front of the room). So, that wasn't too pleasing, and there were still also what appeared to be some breakfast room service plates (in one case, while I admittedly didn't see what the dish looked like before it was eaten, the remains didn't look too good) in the hall. The room itself, however, was pretty nice. It appeared clean, with no noticable dents in furniture or other concerns. There appeared to be some light wear (not dirt, but just wear/tear) to the bedspread, but aside from that, it was fine. The room was fairly plain - not all-white plain, but certainly nothing too fancy. Size-wise, however, it was definitely pretty roomy, with a couch and a nice view. I took some great pictures out the window, which would have been nicer had the window not been dirty. The windows, while not terrible, were certainly in need of a wash. We got snacks at the Walgreens across the street, as well as at the previously mentioned Fox and Obel. We were pondering ordering room service, until we looked at the prices. Had I just ordered a burger, with gratuity (18%) and service charge ($3.25), it would have cost just under $20. Breakfast was similarly ridiculous - $19.75 (plus gratuity, plus charge, so we're talking in the neighborhood of $27 for what you can get for a fraction of the price at several different and very nice places within a half mile) for 2 eggs, meat, bread and coffee/ beverage. I don't know what the Sheraton is thinking with these prices, given that there are definitely other options in the area, including PJ Clarkes across the street if you want a burger or something similar. Also food-related - there are no vending machines. They obviously want you to order one via room service or go to the gift shop. Walgreens is across the street, and both Fox and Obel and another grocery store are down the street. Get your snacks there. We stayed at the W City Center last Summer and, interestingly enough, the room service was cheaper there - if not by a whole lot. However, the service was excellent and so was the food. Somehow I didn't think I'd have the same experience with the Sheraton, and despite the fact that the menu noted that if the food wasn't there in 30 minutes or it'd be free, given how they seemed to charge for everything in this hotel, I felt like if I did make an order and it came in 31 minutes, I'd have a debate on my hands. The bathtub did have a massaging showerhead, which seemed to work wonderfully most of the time, but sprayed all over the place on a couple of settings. The bathtub was fairly nice but - didn't drain. We were only there for one night, settled in and didn't want to sit there while someone came up and fixed it, so we just left it. When we woke up the next morning, the water was still there. The bed was one of Sheraton's relatively new Sweet Sleeper beds and, while it was not up to the W's Signature Bed (still, by far the best bed I've experienced), it was around the same quality was the Westin Heavenly Bed. Continuing the feeling like nothing was complimentary was the fact that there is a charge of one full night if you change your dates of stay after check-in (in other words, no leaving early.) and a $75 charge if you check out after noon. Internet was pretty standard at $9.95 a day, although there are a few chains now offering complimentary internet. Fitness room/pool? Couldn't get a chance to check those out, because you had to sign-in at the fitness room and while apparently they didn't charge you for pool use, they do charge (I believe it's $9.95 a day?) for the fitness room and I didn't want to have to sign-in at the fitness room just to go through there to take a peek at the pool. There are a few restaurants on the premises (including the famed Shula's Steak House) and, while I would have loved to have tried room service or the restaurants just to discuss them in this review, there's a point where things are just too overpriced to "try". I'd have liked to have given room service a try, just to be able to discuss the service and food, but the prices were just too high to "try" anything. Believe it or not, during the night, we began to hear noise from the pipes behind the bathroom. Not enough to keep us from sleeping (and I did get a good night's sleep in the Sheraton bed), but this is the first hotel we've stayed at where this has been an issue. We also heard quite a bit of hall noise. The TV offered a pretty decent lineup of cable channels. I've seen better, I've seen worse. I've read reviews of this hotel noting that they only offered a handful of channels, but there were definitely a bit more than that. It's too bad that this hotel charges for just about everything (moreso than any other hotel I've stayed at), as it really produces a feeling in the consumer that they can't just sit back and enjoy - it's a "don't touch anything, they might charge us" feeling. Staff here was okay. We got a good morning or two, but nothing too overly friendly, and most staff we encountered just went about their business. The final issue was check-out. The in-room system was not working (the menu would not come up, so express check-out was not possible), so we had to check out the old-fashioned way. Thankfully, there wasn't much of a line. When I informed him of the bathtub issue, he didn't seem to care much. I certainly wasn't trying to get any sort of discount or anything, I was just trying to tell him the issue. I didn't even get a "thank you for telling us." In an episode of "The Apprentice" a couple of seasons ago, when teams had to furnish hotel rooms, Trump noted how important the last impression was. I've really felt that way when I've stayed at hotels, as well. The Sheraton didn't do that well in this regard. So, overall, for what I paid, this was a fine hotel. We got a clean, fairly spacious (if no-frills) room with a pretty good view. Given that there are definitely great views to be had from this hotel, I was really hoping for that, and certainly succeeded in that regard. Would I pay full price? No. There are other hotels in this area (including a very nice Holiday Inn a couple of blocks North - the Holiday Inn City Centre) that are cheaper and there are other hotels for the same price that are a better value. Rating? I've seen the Sheraton rated 4 stars, and it's rated 3 1/2 by some services. Personally, I'd consider it to be a good 3-star hotel. The public areas are very nice, but the rooms were pretty comparable to the Courtyard Marriott over on Hubbard and State. Would I come back? If the price was right - and by right, I mean in the range that I paid this time - I would probably consider another stay here. It's a lovely area, and very nice to stroll around.
