I've been bidding for about 10 days on both 3 1/2* and 4* hotels, taking advantage of the free re-bid zones, and using the PRICELINE link on this website to start my bidding. Tonight my $180 bid for a 4* wasn't accepted, but my $174 bid for a 3 1/2* was--at the Marriott Marquis. A couple of days ago, a $173 bid for a 3 1/2* was rejected. On the Marriott website, the cheapest rooms are $399--WAY over my budget. The cheapest hotel I had found in the area as a cancellable back up was the Portland Square for $189. Thanks to this website for the information that helped me.
I've bid up to $150 (before taxes) for those dates in Times Square and all the free re-bid zones without success. Maybe I'll have better luck closer to arrival.
