  1. The CP HY 36 was a real bargain at $189. Hotel is brand new. Our king room was small but adequate for two, and had a very nice bathroom. It was on a low floor next to elevator, but no noise whatsoever. The street is on the shabby side, but not scary. Good deli, Essen, on the corner of 8th for breakfast, and two blocks to the subway at Penn Station. I would not have found this without your help and really appreciate it.
  2. OK. I booked Crowne Plaza for five nights for $1107, which includes taxes and the BetterBidding priceline discount coupon. I think that is an excellent price and really appreciate your suggestions.
  3. Thanks. Our main evening activities will be Broadway on Thursday night (Mormon) and the Metropolitan Opera on Saturday. My idea to be in CPS was to be close to both so as to avoid being late due to traffic congestion. We will also be going to the Whitney and Metropolitan Museums in the daytime. It looks likely that the 4.5* is the Crowne, as the only other 4.5* on the hotel list is the Tryp, which does not allow pets. The price is great and the reviews likewise. I'll wait to see if you have any more comments, and then likely take the plunge.
  4. Thanks. I think I'm going to wait a little longer and see what pops up. The Westhouse would be fine, but I find that they add a mandatory "residence fee" of something like $54/pp/d, which puts the price up to $$383 for two people! And the reviews I see for the Parker are not very good.
  5. King bed, coffee maker, relative quiet are mandatory. Kitchenette nice but optional. Don't need fitness, pool, in-house restaurant or bar. I have been looking at Hotwire, and notice that in the "1 in 4" peek, if I look them in in TripAdvisor, there are typically three good ones and one pretty far down the list. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
  6. Decided to go ahead and pull the trigger on this and am happy with the result. Listed amenities were: Free internet, pet friendly, smoke free, fitness center, restaurant and business center. The Algonquin was obvious as it was the only 4.5* with pet-friendly listed. Thanks for your advice. It was very helpful.
  7. Requesting advice. We will be going to Broadway shows every day so want to be in easy walking distance. Also will be going to MOMA and the Met. Budget about $250, could go a little higher for 5*. Is it reasonable to shop for deals now or better to wait until closer to our dates? Thanks for any advice.
  8. Final outcome: Got a room at the Washington Square Hotel in Greenwich Village for $148 plus tax by calling the hotel directly. Reviews are mixed on Tripadvisor but price is right and location great. Thanks for the help and will check in next time.
  9. Yesterday 7/17 I bid up through $155 without success, using the same strategy and the four zones: MTW, UP/CPS, MTE, and MTS. I may consider going to 3* as my next strategy.
  10. That's probably a good idea. I see there are a lot of 4*s in MTW on the pinned list. So, it would be fine to develop a new strategy including MTW with the other three zones up to $160. Thanks and back to you.
  11. I booked the Millenium UN via your link as backup for $183+tax=$213. I think I'll retry Priceline after the 72 hr lockout and take it from there. And I will raise my maximum to $160 with the same zones. Should I just use the same strategy that you recommended and add $10? Thanks for the help. I am learning a lot.
  12. Ok, I followed the recommended strategy exactly up through $145 but no success. I checked Hotwire and as of right now there is a 4* MTE at $161, probably W New York. I could nab that, or wait and try again, or other strategy. Any thoughts appreciated. FYI: Using Mozilla, which is my usual browser, I could not access Priceline through SavingsBarn. When I changed to IE, no problem. Thought you would want to know for other users.
  13. Thanks for your advice. Since I would prefer not to be in MTW, I will substitute UM for MTW in your recommended stratetgy. I will give it a go when I get home from work this evening and post the results.
  14. First time Priceline, have done Hotwire once, have read posts and understand bidding process. Prefer zones UM, MTE, MTS in that order, maximum $150, no splitting. If unsuccessful up to that level, would consider going down to 3*. If you could give me a suggested bidding strategy I would be most grateful.
  15. You are a wealth of information. Yes, the block was due to Norton Internet Security, easily solved by disabling it. I installed this recently and have mixed feelings about it. Sometimes it seems like overkill. The good news is I just booked the IC Barclay for $158! Amenities as listed in the hotel list, booked through the link. I'm very happy with this deal, and the process was fun. Our daughter is a college student in NYC so I expect we will be there a couple of times a year. Good to know about this website and I will be using again. Thanks, and Go Blue!
  16. Thanks for getting back quickly. I don't see any links or info attached to the $199 suggestions? Also could you elaborate on the RC-is this the Battery Park and where is rate offered? I'll keep you posted on my progress.
  17. I am a first time user of this cool site, and have enjoyed reading the "pinned" pages. Right now I would lean towards using HW, as it appears to give a lot more control of hotel choice in exchange for a small to medium increase in price. We have theater tix for 2/3 nights, so would like to be either in Times Sq or nearby MTE. Right now I see what appears to be The Muse 4 1/2* for $204 in Times Sq, and what appears to be the IC Barclay 4* $158 in MTE. These seem like pretty good rates. I can either snap one up now, or maybe get a fully refundable backup and wait a while. I checked The Muse website and can book there for $225. The reason I am leaning away from PL is that some of the 4* hotels didn't look to great when I read about them in Tripadvisor. Any advice is greatly appreciated.
