1. I started with a link from this website. For a six-night stay, it came to $306. Plus taxes and fees of $70.26 plus a "hotel fee" (?) of $9.00, the total came to $385.26.
2. Started with the Priceline link from this site. Began bidding at $55, and didn't win. I kept adding areas that didn't have 3.5* properties and increasing my bid amount, until I won at $66. Including Priceline fees and taxes of $14.02, my total cost is $80.02.
3. I started with the Price.line Quickquote link from this website. My first bid was for the West-Chesterfield zone, for 2.5 stars at $38. I didn't win. With my following bids, I increased my amounts each time, and added zones, adding Westport, then Frontenac, then St. Charles/St. Peters. On the last bid I won the La Quinta Westport for $49. Including Priceline fees and taxes of $15.42, that brings my total to $64.42. Checking Hot.wire, I didn't find anything for a comparable price in the areas I wanted, so I'm happy with my Price.line purchase.
4. I began with the QuickQuote PRICELINE link from this website. First I selected the Kansas City Airport (MCI) area, and offered $35. I didn't win that bid. I added areas and increased my bids in $2 increments, until I won the Fairfield Inn at $41. Including Priceline fees and taxes of $14.56, that brings my total to $55.56. The best rate on the Fairfield Inn website is $119.99, so I think I got a good deal through Price.line.
5. I started with the HOTWIRE QuickQuote feature from this website. I was surprised that Hotwire considers this a 3-star property, but I've noticed that Hotwire rates hotels differently than Priceline does. It's listed as a 2.5-star property in the hotel list here. Quality Inn doesn't have the best hotels in my experience, but it is for only one night so maybe it won't be too bad. In the "hot rates" section, Hotwire claims this has a 100% approval rating from customers, which sounds pretty good, right? Then when you check the property under Hotwire's regular listing, it only shows 85% approved. When you go to TripAdvisor.com, it only shows a 58% positive rating, and a lot of the positive reviews look fake to me. We will see. The amenities listed were: free parking, free breakfast, free internet, pet friendly, indoor pool(s), fitness center, pool(s), business center, self service laundry.
6. I began by using the PRICELINE QuickQuote feature from this website. Priceline has split Arboretum and Austin Northwest into two separate areas. I began by bidding $48 for Austin Arboretum, and didn't win the bid. I made four more bids, adding a new area each time, and increasing my bid a few dollars each time. I finally won at $62 a night times 2 nights for $124, plus taxes and Priceline fees of $27.78, for a total of $151.78.
7. I started with the QuickQuote HOTWIRE link from this site. There were four listed amenities before I purchased: Free Parking, Free Internet, Pool(s), and Self Service Laundry. After I won, another amenity appeared: Internet Access, which seemed redundant, but that is what they said. Supposedly this has a "90% recommended" rating, according to HOTWIRE. My cost is $58 for the room plus $12.94 in Hotwire fees and taxes, for a total of $70.94 for the night.
8. I began by using the Better Bidding link to Hotwire. Listed amenities on the "regular" Hotwire site (not the Bidding Helper/Hotwire Easy View) were: -Free Internet -Pet Friendly -Near Beach -Smoke Free Rooms -Fitness Center -Pool(s) -Restaurant(s) -Business Center After I selected and paid for the room, the following amenity was added to the list: -Internet Access The best rate listed on the Sheraton website for this property was $139, when using an AAA discount. I considered trying Priceline, but according to the hotel list, it is considered a 4-star property there. There were several other 4-star properties in this area, and since I wanted to stay at this particular hotel, I felt I had better luck by going with Hotwire.
9. One other thing I forgot to mention is that I checked with Hot.wire, and they had a 3-star property in Forest Hills available at $73 a night. Of course I don't know if that one was the Best Western, but if so, then my PRICELINE win of $54 was a substantial savings over HOTWIRE.
10. I didn't see anything listed here for the Priceline list of hotels for the Forest Hill section of Ft. Worth, so I'm guessing it must be a new area for Priceline? In any event, I began with the Priceline link on BetterBidding. For Ft. Worth, I selected the Forest Hill area, and bid $52 for a 3-star property. I didn't win that bid, but was offered a win if I increased my bid by $7 to $59 a night. I declined, and went back to change my offer. Next, I added the Burleson area, which doesn't have any 3-star properties. I increased my bid to $54 a night, which I won. Including taxes and fees of $42.36, that brought my four night total to $258.36. I'm not familiar with the Forest Hill area, but it is relatively close to South Arlington. That was where I wanted to stay, but I was having trouble winning any bids there, and when I checked the hotel websites, many Arlington hotels were booked for the nights I wanted. The reviews on this Best Western, which is relatively new, are decent, so I'm looking forward to giving it a try. Online, the lowest rate directly from Best Western for this property is $95 a night, so I feel I got a good deal through Priceline.
11. Began with PRICELINE link from here. I started at $52, and didn't win. I added the Canton area (which has no 3.5* hotels), increased my bid to $55, and won. Including taxes and Priceline fees of $14.10, it brought my total to $69.10.
12. Used the HOTWIRE link from this website. At two nights, the rate came to $138 plus $28.81 in taxes and Hotwire fees for a total of $166.81. The Comfort Inn website had a rate of $71, so there was not much saved by using Hotwire. The amenities listed were: -Free parking -Free breakfast -Free internet -Indoor pool(s) -Fitness center -Business center -Internet access
13. Began with PRICELINE link. Started bid at $37, didn't win. Added other areas without a 3.5* property while increasing bid amount. Won at $48, including taxes and fees of $15.25, came to total cost of $63.25.
14. Began by bidding for a fullsize at $13/day x 8 days for a total of $104.00 plus $77.12 in taxes and fees, for a total of $181.12. Won on the first try. The best published rate I found was on Hotwire through Dollar, for $16.65 per day, for a total of $194.81 including taxes and fees. The fees on Priceline's name your own price must be higher than on Hotwire's published prices? I'll have to keep that in mind next time I shop for a car rental.
15. Began with the PRICELINE link from here, with 3*, Troy-Madison Heights at $44. Didn't win. Kept adding areas and increasing the bid amount slightly, and ended up with the Best Western in Sterling Heights at $51. Including taxes and Priceline fees of $12.99, the total came to $63.99. It wasn't my best bidding effort, but if the hotel is decent then I'm happy with what I paid.
16. Began with the PRICELINE link from here, bid $41 for 3.5-star property in Westport. Didn't win. Priceline responded with a message "If you are willing to up your bid by $12 to $53, you may have another chance without making any other changes to your bid" or something like that. I declined. Then added Hazelwood, which doesn't have a 3.5-star property, and upped the bid to $44. Didn't win. Then added St Charles/St Peters, which doesn't have a 3.5-star property, and upped the bid to $47. This time, I won the bid. With taxes and fees of $15.02, the total comes to $62.02. I like staying at this particular hotel, and it helps the bidding process that it is the only 3.5-star Priceline property in Westport (along with its sister Sheraton in the same complex).
17. I started by using the link to PRICELINE from Better Bidding. My first bid was for the Westport area, 3.5 stars, at $46. Including taxes and fees the total came to $60.83. It was denied, but Priceline countered with a guaranteed win if I would up my base bid to $54. I declined. My next offer added the Hazelwood area, which I knew didn't have any 3.5 star properties at this time. I increased my bid to $48; including taxes and fees of $15.18, the total came to $63.18. That bid won. On Hotwire, the Westport 3.5 star price is $68 plus $15.24 for a total of $83.24, and I believe it is the same property. On Sheraton's website, the lowest price for this property is $119 or $137.06 including taxes. In the past when I've won this property, they've allowed me to switch to the Westport Sheraton Chalet (if rooms were available), which is located in the same complex, at no extra charge. The Sheraton Westport Plaza is fine, but the Chalet is slightly better for my needs.
18. In doing research here, recent winning bids seem to vary a lot depending on the specific 3* property in this zone. Country Inns seems to be on the low end, and Courtyard on the high end. It appeared that the Staybridge was being offered on Hotwire (based on amenities) for $70. Although there is no guarantee Priceline and Hotwire are offering the same hotel at the same time, I figured there was a good chance Staybridge Suites was available on Priceline. Using the Better Bidding link for Priceline at the top of the page, I entered my desired dates and city. I selected 3* and Sorrento Mesa as my zone, and bid $56 per night. That bid was rejected, but I received an offer from Priceline that if I increased my bid to $71, I could bid again without making any other changes. I declined. I rebid and for my change added another zone. San Ysidro was the only other zone listed in San Diego without a 3* property at that moment, so that was the zone I selected. I increased my bid to $61 per night and won. For two nights stay plus $24.26 in Priceline fees and tax, my total came to $146.26. If I'd gone through Hotwire my total price would have been $164.90. The Staybridge Suites website listed their lowest rate at $162.99 per night, and with tax would have cost $366.92 for two nights. I'm pleased with my Priceline win!
19. Began bidding at 3* for $42; including fees and taxes of $12.60, the rate would have been $54.60. Didn't win. Added 2-1/2* properties, increased bid to $46, including fees and taxes of $13.16, rate came to $59.16. Won that one.
20. The amenities listed were: - Comp breakfast - Fitness center - Pool - Laundry facilities - Tennis nearby The price of $52 per night at four nights came to $208; including taxes and Hotwire fees of $32.85, the total came to $240.85.
21. I began by bidding $37 for a 3.5* in the Westport area, didn't win the bid. Priceline notified me that if I would increase my bid by $10, it would allow me to win the bid. I declined. Then I increased my bids in $2 increments, each time adding a different area that didn't have a 3.5* property. When I got to $43, I won the bid for the Sheraton Westport Plaza. Including taxes and fees of $14.07, my total came to $57.07.
22. Started with St Louis Airport area, 2.5-star, bid $30 and won the Ramada Airport on first try. Including taxes and fees of $11.81 it brought my total to $41.81. The best rate on Hotwire for the airport area and a 2.5-star property was $40. The Ramada website's lowest price for this property was $50.
23. Started by bidding $39 for Westport, didn't win. Was offered to try again by increasing bid by $11, declined. Added Forest Park/Clayton, increased bid to $44, didn't win. Added St. Louis West/Chesterfield, bid $44, won the Doubletree. Including taxes and fees, total cost is $58.22.
24. Bid $42, including taxes and fees of $13.86, brought my total price to $55.86. Crowne Plaza Clayton 7750 Carondelet Avenue Saint Louis, MO 63105
25. Listed amenities: -Airport Shuttle -Fitness Center -Pool(s) -Restaurant(s) -Business Center -High-speed Internet Access Room rate of $54 plus taxes and fees of $14.99 brought my total to $68.99. Sheraton Westport Hotel Lakeside Chalet 191 West Port Plaza Saint Louis MO 63146
