  1. Yeah any zone would be fine.. Downtown-Financial not preferable but it will get me to where I want togo (need to be in the Union Square and Hells Kitchen area)... And I am coming in from CT via the MTA to GRand Central. I think the highest I would want is upper east/west side (e.g. no Harlem) Midtown East is at $167 for express deal, wonder if I can get it for cheaper
  2. So I am traveling to NYC last minute this weekend. I am hoping to looking for a 3 star or more in Manhattan (upper east and west side is the furthest) for under 140 a night. I am wondering if this is feasible for bidding. Can someone suggest a bidding tactic?
  3. So I have tried priceline and I wanted to definitely stay in the downtown providence area. I didn't want to add in other areas risking that we don't get downtown. For Price.line this is what I did: 3.5* 90..Rejected 3* 93..Rejected Reason why I stopped there since HOTWIRE had 3* for downtown PVD for $96. So I ended up booking with HOTWIRE. $96+tax=$119.17 I have stayed at this hotel through Hotwire in the past for a slightly cheaper rate. But I figured this is a busy weekend for Providence (Gay Pride weekend) compared to when I got a cheaper deal for New Years Eve. There is a less demand on tourism for New Years Eve vs. lots of vendors...a few corporation sponsors and people traveling in for pride. . overall the boyfriend and I just needed a place to crash after staying out till 3 AM dancing and partying... vs. driving an hour home at 3 AM... Was hoping hotel more downtown, but this works. I did checked Wyndam's website before booking with HOTWIRE, since I suspected this would be the hotel Hotwire will give me. Regular price was $152+tax.. with AAA discount. So I did save some money...
  4. Thanks ya'll for responding. I never booked a room on hotwire before. And my PL experience has been only me and maybe with 1 other person, so I always got a king size bed instead of a double. So wasn't sure. I saw on the terms that there is no guarantees.. but calling the hotel worked for me. I assume since Providence is not a high demand hotel city so it was easier to accommodate requests, when compared to NYC or Boston.. So got 2 rooms
  5. The city zone is misleading since Newport is a different area from providence... this was for Providence. I've booked a 3* Downtown Providence area hotel (was the only choice for New Years Eve) for 2 rooms, using the HOTWIRE. This is my first time trying HOTWIRE, since I'm usually a PRICELINE person (see my history of reported wins). There are 5 of us total (1 couple and 3 single men!), but I booked it as 2 rooms with 4 people. after booking, I called the hotel requesting at least 1 room to have a double bed and the hotel said ok. If i specified 5 people for 2 rooms, the price went up to $99/night instead of $84 for the 2 rooms. So I opted to tell HOTWIRE there are 4 people, so this way we pay the lower price. We're only using the room to crash after bar hopping for new years. From googling, I read HOTWIRE there is a better chance getting a double bed upon request than Price.ine. But of course, I don't know if this is a myth or fact. My experience have been only been traveling by myself or 1 other person which I shared a bed with using PL. I was hoping for a hotel closer to downtown, this way we can stumble to back to the hotel after celebrating new years. But this is about 1.2 miles from the bar we're going to. This place has free parking based on HOTWIRE, which I guess save us $20 for parking downtown. So I don't think it's that bad.
  6. So I am looking at hotels in downtown providence, RI on hotwire (3*, that is the only choice). There will be a few of us.. so we want 2 double beds per rooms. So if i list 2 rooms with 4 adults. would they give me double beds for both rooms?
  7. So I am hoping to stay in NYC for Aug 4-5. just one night. This is what I did so far and failed (today, yesterday and day before): Select 3* CPS, Chelsea, DT, ESB, HK, MSG... Bid $90, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINE Select 3* MTE, MTW, QB, TS, UES and UWS Bid $90, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINE Select 3* MTE, Chelsea, DT, ESB, HK, MSG... Bid $95, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINE Select 3* CPS, MTW, QB, TS, UES and UWS Bid $95, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINE Select 3* CPS, MTW, DT, ESB, HK, MSG... Bid $100, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINE Select 3* MTE, Chelsea, QB, TS, UES and UWS Bid $100, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINE Select 3* CPS, Chelsea, QB, ESB, HK, MSG... Bid $105, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINE Select 3* MTE, MTW, DT, TS, UES and UWS Bid $105, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINE Select 3* CPS, Chelsea, DT, TS, HK, MSG... Bid $110, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINE Select 3* MTE, MTW, QB, ESB, UES and UWS Bid $110, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINE Select 3* CPS, Chelsea, DT, ESB, UES, MSG... Bid $115, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINE Select 3* MTE, MTW, QB, TS, HK and UWS Bid $115, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINE Select 3* CPS, Chelsea, DT, ESB, HK, UWS... Bid $120, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINE Select 3* MTE, MTW, QB, TS, UES and MSG Bid $120, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINE Select 3* MTE, MTW, DT, ESB, HK, MSG... Bid $125, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINE Select 3* CPS, Chelsea, QB, TS, UES and UWS Bid $125, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINE Select 3* CPS, Chelsea, QB, TS, HK, MSG... Bid $130, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINE Select 3* MTE, MTW, DT, ESB, UES and UWS Bid $130, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINE This is based off a previous strategy by a mod posted here. So I am looking at other zones, anyone have any experience with Brooklyn? LIC/Queens/Astoria? Soho? Was told to stay away from 2* in a post somewhere on here... Basically This trip is a fun/pleasure trip.. going out to the bars with friends... last thing we really want is to take the 5:40AM train home to Connecticut.. arriving to CT prob at 7 AM and getting home at 7:30.. We will be partying in the HK area... so I don't think it's a long subway ride to LIC and of course back to Grand Central in the AM
  8. Originally booked this reservation: winning Priceline bid I had trouble getting a room for Saturday, but wanted to definitely have a room for Sunday. I tried extend a night, they wanted $254+tax to extend my night there. So I closed out the site and reopen PRICELINE using the link in my signature. So I started bidding My first bid for $100 with MTW, MTE and TS. It failed So I added Hells Kitchen to the combination above for $105 and won. The hotels aren't that far from each other.. so I don't think it's that bad. Sadly, I wouldn't be able to sleep in but would have to check out and check into another hotel. Saved a bit of money by doing this way, and perhaps would inconvenient me for an hour or two.. not bad.
  9. Unsure if this is considered open (since I asked a general question for my own knowledge on how people determine their starting bids and if they used the median data PL provides), so I'm closing it just in case :D So I am still searching for a room for the Saturday night. I grabbed a room for the sunday night already just in case (at the very least I needed a room for Sunday night, Saturday is just an add-on). Here is my Sunday night priceline win.
  10. I figure that add a night won't work at the moment, since I have been trying to place bids in that area (and other areas) for the night before. Since its been failing, I figure add a night won't work, since essentially it's another bid for the price I won for that time frame right?
  11. So this is the tactic I used. I was having trouble getting a room for 06/23-06/25 as mentioned a bit in I definitely need a room for the 24-25, since it's a month away, I just want to make sure I have that room. Now I am going to try to see if I can grab a room for Saturday night. It would be nice, but I can live without with. I know with this I will most likely have to check out of one place and check in at another.. Select 3* CPS, Chelsea, DT, ESB, HK, MSG... Bid $90, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINE Select 3* MTE, MTW, QB, TS, UES and UWS Bid $95, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINE
  12. Forgot to close this out.. was looking through my old posts. Sadly didn't get any bid wins for Boston. But I'll be practicing in the upcoming year since I'll be living 90 mins outside of Boston in the Fall and will be wanting to do night trips (without the drive back). For this conference, I ended up using the conference rate that I booked once I registered for the conference. Stayed at a DoubleTree in Chinatown that was quite nice..
  13. I have been using the tactic that you have suggested actually in my previous Priceline NYC thread... well a bit modified by replacing UWS/UES with Lower East Side and Soho. I might consider re-adding in UWS and UES..it's just subway rides takes a bit long (esp from UES) to get to places.. but I can live with that I think.. I am still debating on what price to start as...and am curious (in general) what is a "reasonable" starting bid, so I don't "waste" a bid. I The tactic you laid out for me started at $80.. usually I have no trouble with that :) But looking back at my previous wins, they were mostly during off-peak times. Also I might try 2*, debating what the starting bids should be for 2*.. I looked at a few of the 2* hotels on priceline (the area where you get to pick the hotel).. most of them are ok.. Since my trip is a month away, it's making me a bit uneasy.. so think I will need to book something sooner than later.
  14. also so April-Dec are NYC peak season? I'm just wondering since I book a lot of rooms in NYC :)
  15. I'll try starting at $100 tomorrow. I think my max after taxes is $300 for 2 nights (so ~$120ish a night). So far, I have been doing 80-$120. Yeah I know bidding is a case by case basis, I'm curious if I can do 2 nights for June 23-25 for around $300ish after taxes. been doing 3*. I am wondering how do people pick their starting bid basically and if the median that PL show is any indicator :)
  16. So I have spent a few days bidding for NYC using same strategies for NYC I have used in the past. I have been failing. I think my starting bid is too low ($80, when the median is $218..so perhaps 60% off median price). I was wondering do people use the median at all? How do you decide your starting bid? I usually start at 80 and add $5 after each bidding round.
  17. Got this hotel room for $75, first tried $50 for 4* and again for 3.5* for $50 didn't work. Later tried again for 4* for $70 rejected and got this one for $75.
  18. Thanks! I have never taken a taxi in Boston yet... NYC is not that badly price...that is good to know. I dislike the fact the T stops running like at midnight.
  19. I haven't bid yet yesterday or today. I played around with it last week. I'll check the new rezoned and see if it works better. I'm in no rush since this stay isn't till April.
  20. Didn't know you can do that with priceline.. I'll give them a call this weekend. Do I call the hotel itself or like through the 800 holiday inn number
  21. For the last week or two, I have been starting my bid from 3.5*/3* at 100 going up to $120 and so far nothing. I think it might be too early. I have already booked a refundable hotel through the conference rate for $130/night. I can cancel within a few days before the stay, so I guess I will try again maybe 2 months or a month before the stay date (of course before the refundable date expires).
  22. Got this bid using the Strategy outlined here . Got it on the first try. Stayed at this hotel back March. it was an ok place.. Sadly in March they only had smoking rooms.. so hopefully I'll get a non-smoking room this time :) As always, using Priceline to get great bids
  23. Hello! I looked at the map and here are the zones I'm interested in: boston waterfront/convention center copley square/theatre district Quincy Market Boston Harbor Front I think the T would get me there in a reasonable time.
  24. I have followed up on the other postings, as you requested. I am willing to look at other zones, as long as I can hop on the T and be at the convention center perhaps within 30 mins. I don't know Boston that well, but I know their T-system is fairly slow (I'm spoiled with NYC's subway system). So I am unsure which zones to look at, hence I posted on this forum. Looking at the map, I see a few close zones (i.e airport or quincy), but I am unsure how quickly I can get to the convention center from those places via T. I am fine with trying 4* first and than 3/3.5*. My goal is least expensive (perhaps around $100ish a night), of course distance. The conference hotel discount is giving me $150/night for the doubletree downtown boston. I have booked that and I am able to cancel that reservation up to 21 days before my stay.
  25. thank you so much for everyone's help on this. I ended up canceling my trip. I am might be booking a trip next month and if I do, I will use this strategy and report back if needed.
