I just booked a 4-star hotel in Chicago's Magnificent Mile / Water Tower area with an advertised (crossed-out) rate of $179/night and a "discounted rate" of $112/night. There were four or five different hotels with the same set of amenities so I knew it was a crapshoot, but I got the Millenium Knickerbocker. Five minutes later on I'm the hotel's website and sure enough, the SAME EXACT BOOKING would have cost me only $5 more. For a two day trip! I called Hotwire and asked for an explanation and all the idiot said was "sir, it says right in the disclaimer that these crossed-out rates are just averages for hotels with similar hotel ratings." Seriously? What a waste of time. Now you have to look up every hotel's retail rates manually and compare against the quoted "discount" rate. /rant
