Thanks -- the thread had exactly the kind of info that I needed.

I'm headed for Austin for a long-term (4-6 weeks) stay. I'd like to get a good deal, and there are several 2-star joints that show up. I'd like to bid for at least a week or so to get a good rate. But you really can't tell with those places until your boots (and the rest of you) are on the ground. I'm curious if other people have had any experience at making a multiple night reservation, then arriving and finding that the place is a dump. Do you have any luck getting Priceline to let you out of the deal, or are you just completely SOL? I know I could just reserve for one night, see how it is, yada-yada-yada.... Bid $39 for three-star in Lakeland, won it. Should have bid lower! Saw later it was only $69 on Orbitz, when Priceline claimed it is usually $80.

Offered $55 for what Orbitz is asking $149 for. Figured I'd get laughed off the site, and they took it! Happy with the price, but wish I'd offered less.
