I just got back from my first visit to Boston and we stayed one night in the Quincy Market/Financial District and one night in the Back Bay area. I loved both areas and would say that you really can't go wrong. You can get most places by using the "T" or walking anyway. Back Bay is probably closet to the most shopping and restaurants, but Quincy Market/Financial District is close to the water. It's a great city....you'll love it no matter which area you choose to stay.
