  1. Wow, thanks for this review! Westin on Northwestern Hwy is one of my favs and I like the Westin brand in general, so this is great to know. My bff is getting married in MI this summer, maybe I'll gift her a room the night before the wedding.
  2. The cheapest PL areas seem to be Time Square, Midtown East and someplace else that now escapes me. The Hudson has been going @ bargain basement rates ($85-95 per night), so maybe that's the area I was thinking of if thats not in the TS area. The Hudson isn't my personal fav, but I do like staying at the more boutique-ish hotels in NYC. They are always so eye-pleasing and smartly decorated. They also have fab lounges and sometimes u don't actually have to "go out" for the night and since it is your b/day, what's better than being a slight bit irresponsible when u can take an elevator to your room. :) I think $100 is "do-able" esp @ the 3* level. Personally, I'd start w/a 4* and work my way down to 3.5. Really hold out before u settle for a 3*. You have plenty of time, so if it takes trying a bid daily, do it. I never make reservations too far in advance just in case the unexpected arises & I don't think it hurts my success. So far in my PL life, I've found that hotels are quite accommodating. When two beds were needed it was never an issue. I've been upgraded to club levels, allowed to check in 5 hrs early. Maybe ppl are working extra hard to please these days and my stays in NYC have never been any different. I would suggest that u check-in as early as possible (even if the room isn't ready) before the hotel runs out of double beds, b/c they are in higher demand. Bonne Chance!
  3. My friend wanted to stay @ the Grand Hyatt w/us, but panicked and lowered her star rating when the first bid of $100 x nt on a 4* in MTE wasn't accepted. She waited until the week of travel to book. :) Trip start out poorly, airline lost her luggage. She finally found the 3rd room they gave her acceptable upon arrival. :) It is steps away from the subway, but the lobby looks more like 2.5-3*. It's an extremely dead area at night. Maybe were out really late. King sized bed was huge and the room was avg NYC size so there wasn't much space to move around. Weird new desktop mini-bar system. If u remove something from it for longer than 2 mins it will automatically be billed to your room. She did get the yummy welcome cookie, but she's allergic to nuts. LOL.
  4. For the archives Didn't stay here, just booked it for someone else. Site says all rooms are suites, but on TripAdvisor u can see that they have some studio rooms (still large for NYC). The person was given the studio room w/2 beds and a mini-fridge. They did press for the larger room. Tried several times, the person needed to be in this area so I had to wait 24hrs btw bids. Started in the low $70's. Waited until the week before travel.
  5. Old trip, just posting for the archives. Grand Hyatt 109 E. 42nd St (@ 5th Ave, iirc) Part business/part leisure trip Won on the first try, selected only the MTE area @ 4* level Booked a few weeks out from the travel date Great location, wonderful amenities. Fab for getting to and from the airport. Adjacent to Grand Central Station so every mode of travel is waiting for you. Best gym in a hotel I've ever seen. :) I worked out @ midnight all by myself!!!
