I'm not sure if the clerk can see the amount but in my experience they know if it's a Hotwire or Priceline bid. Some people feel they get put into a "Priceline room". I'm more inclined to believe it's luck of the draw... last summer at a Hilton in Paris the room was fine but showing signs it needed updating. Someone who was there a week later and with a LOWER Priceline bid was in a room described as sparkling new. So go figure. Either way, when you're paying less than half price, it's hard to complain. Le Crystal 4.5 * was $134... a 4 star would have been about $65. But I figured I would get the Sheraton Center and really don't like the way their rooms appear to be rather outdated... Used the HOTWIRE link here and got 4.5 Hotel le Crystal in Montreal for 2 nights, Dec 27 and 28 for $134 a night. I figured it was worth the extra over a 4 star... Rob

We got a room at the Hilton Eiffel Tower location on a Priceline bid of $141 US in August 2008. The price and hotel were brilliant for the amount paid. If I had been paying the rack rate I'd have been very upset. The hotel is showing it's age and getting a bit frayed around the edges. We stayed in several other hotels in France of lesser perceived quality yet this was the only one with a CRT television... the others had LCDs. The hairdryer was mounted so high that my wife and daughter could barely use it. The air conditioning never worked during our stay. Luckily it was just cool enough in the evenings that opening the windows sufficed. I mentioned the problem when we checked out and was told that the AC was off in all the rooms as the temperature was not high enough! Tell that to someone was was paying over $500 a night! I overheard a doorman tell a guest he was told they would soon be in another chain and no longer a Hilton. All in all we got great value for what we paid. But this in no longer a 4* hotel. Rob
