heathertopp
Greetings- we have theatre tickets and air tickets for a trip to New York city from May 20-22. I have been reading the good advice on this board and have decided to try bidding on Priceline for the first time. I wonder if i should wait till a bit closer to my dates. Also when placing my first bid do I list multiple zones or start with one zone? I'm thinking of a 3.5 or 4 star in MSG, Times Square, Chelsea, Soho, Uptown or Downtown West. Possibly Brooklyn as we have stayed there in the past and liked it. Thanks for any help you can provide! Link to comment
AaronJB
Welcome to Betterbidding. :)There is no way to know for sure if prices are going to come down closer to your dates. However, this has been seen less often in the years since 2008 as demand has ramped up again. Additionally, this is not a slow season so demand is certainly there. What would be your desired budget per night for this stay? heathertopp
Hi thanks for the quick reply. Based on what I have checked already I think we would be lucky to pay $200 per night. I would like to pay $170 but I am not certain that is realistic. Link to comment
thereuare
I'm thinking of a 3.5 or 4 star in MSG, Times Square, Chelsea, Soho, Uptown or Downtown West. The bolded zones above are not options on the PRICELINE bidding page... can you please clarify/list the zones that you're willing to accept by PRICELINE name (use the search box on the top right corner of the board to see the 'official' price zone names) I think you have a very good chance at winning a 4* hotel at $200 or less (pending confirmation of your zones)... did you want to try for this first OR is the goal the least expensive 3.5* or better for this stay? heathertopp
Hi - sorry for the confusion. The areas I would be happy with are: Central Park South, Chelsea Area,'Empire State Area, MSG - Convention Area, Midtown West, Soho-TriBeCa, TS-Theatre District, Upper West Side. I would also consider the Downtown-Financial Area I guess - have stayed there a long time ago and found it ok to get around. I am thinking that a 3.5 star would be fine as we are there for such a short time and won't be in the room very much. I realize that this was posted in a random area - sorry about that! Thanks for your help Link to comment
thereuare
Few quick questions... I think you can get something in midtown within your budget, so do you still want to include 'Downtown' in your bidding? (since it's do-able, but not as much of an ideal location as midtown) Note that the CPS contains the Hudson Hotel which has notoriously small rooms (even by NYC standards), would this be an acceptable outcome? What about the Lower East Side zone? Not as convenient as midtown but i think i there may be low priced inventory in this zone (not cheap, as afterall it is NYC, but near your budget) I'm also seeing what looks like the Wyndham New Yorker for $205/nite which has an excellent location across the street from Penn Station which you may want to consider at this price. If you want to move forward by bidding, i don't think a 3.5* is going to cost much less than a 4* (if at all), so is there a point where as you get closer to your maximum bid you would want to stop bidding 3.5* and try for a 4 star? Let us know the above and we will advise accordingly. heathertopp
Hello - the PRICELINE EXPRESS Deal for $205 looks good but I would like to try bidding. I hope I won't kick myself for passing on this deal! After reading your suggestions I will leave out CPS and Downtown and add the Lower Easr Side to my preferrances -also is Brooklyn a bad idea? As I mentioned we stayed there a few years ago at the Nu Hotel which was very well located but wondering if other hotels are as convenient to the Subway. Now my question is do I bid on only1 area to start or all my areas? Thanks again for your help. Heather Link to comment
thereuare
I would leave out Brooklyn... the zone is large, and even if it weren't, i'd only consider if you couldn't get something in Manhattan within your budget (or even close to your budget, as it's worth a little more to stay within Manhattan, imo) As far as zones, did you want to start at the 4* level up to your budget OR try for the least expensive 3.5* or better? If the latter, how high do you want to go before getting close to the $200 area where it may pay to increase the star rating to 4 stars? Please confirm and we will suggest a strategy for you to follow. Also, is this what i'm seeing as the current acceptable list of zones: Chelsea ESB MSG MTW Soho TS UWS LES Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases... or thru our sister site MAPS and HOTELS.com for your regular rate purchases. heathertopp
Hello Thereuare- As per your advice I will leave Brooklyn out of the mix. Ok my list of acceptable areas is as you stated except I think I will remove TS. If I'm not being too picky I realize that I don't want to stay there. If you think it possible to win a 4 star for $200 then I will go with that level - that would be great. Also I hadnt ever looked at the PRICELINE EXPRESS Deals until you mentioned one in a previous post. Heather Link to comment

heathertopp
Yes I did try bidding - I bid with all of my choice areas and then with increments of $5 (starting at $135 or whatever was suggested) and the re-bid with the 3 areas that don't have 4* properties and then I had a chance to bid again and I want sure how to proceed -Heather Link to comment
Romelle
There is a MTW 4* at $200 at the moment. Romelle Link to comment

heathertopp
Sorry I thought the strategy was to bid all of the zones and then add the 3 rebids. My mistake but I still don't see how to begin the bidding. Last night I bid again starting with 3 of my choice zones to begin and then added a zone and upped the bid each time. I still ran out of zones before my chances to bid ran out.Heather Link to comment
thereuare
Let's backtrack... What are the three areas you're using that don't offer 4* or higher hotels? heathertopp
Ok The 3 zones I'm using that don't offer 4* properties are Coney Island, Green Pt-Williamsburg and Morningside Hts. Link to comment
thereuare
You have your re-bid zones correct... but always double check just before bidding to make sure that nothing has changed since you last looked. So you simply use each one of these in lieu of 're-bid zone' above. So using the first part of the strategy as an example: Select 4* Chelsea, ESB, MSG, MTW... Bid $135, if rejected add re-bid zone (Coney Island)... Bid $140, if rejected add re-bid zone (Greenpoint)... Bid $145, if rejected add re-bid zone (Morningside Heights)... Bid $150, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINE... Select 4* Chelsea, Soho, UWS, LES... Bid $135, if rejected add re-bid zone (Coney Island)... Bid $140, if rejected add re-bid zone (Greenpoint)... Bid $145, if rejected add re-bid zone (Morningside Heights)... Bid $150, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINE... You can then proceed thru all of the bidding reiterations in the original post in the same bidding session, as each is a unique bid combination. Does that make it clearer? heathertopp
Thanks for your extreme patience in explaining the bidding process! In the end I called in my son to help :). We ended up starting with 3 of my acceptable zones and bid up in larger increments than was suggested. We got to the 2nd rebid zone. I'm happy that I was able to secure a well located hotel for less than my budget!! It was also good to find out about the Express Deals. Btw we changed our plans to include an extra night. Best regards Heather Link to comment
