Hi,

My daughter (20 years old) are going to be in NYC August 11-17 and need help bidding. Would love to find a 4* gem for as inexpensive as possible . . . maybe under $130 per night?

Any area in Manhattan is fine as long as subway is not too far away at outer bounds of region. (Not Brooklyn, Long Island, etc.)

Thanks so much!

Welcome to Betterbidding. :)

Unfortunately, I think $130 is going to be difficult for Midtown for these date/s - I think it will likely take slightly higher than that, especially for a 4* in Midtown. One note is that there is no guarantee that you will get a hotel right near the subway - when bidding you have to be willing to stay anywhere within this zone.

Thank you for using the board's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.

How about anywhere in NYC except for the locations listed above?

To avoid any confusion, please list the zones, by PRICELINE name, that you are willing to stay in (as opposed to the zones you won't stay in)

What would be a reasonable top price?

We will of course start lower, but at current rates i think you're more likely looking at the $140-$160 area rather than sub-$130.

Do you happen to have a bidding plan that you wouldn't mind sharing?

Please confirm the zones you're willing to stay in, and i'll add the following information as well:

At the 4* level...

MTE- most hotels are well located, but a few properties can be up to a 10 minute walk to the subway, and one 'known' property a 15 minute walk

CPS - well located but contains the Hudson which has notoriously small rooms (even by NYC standards)

Chelsea - some hotels can be up to a 10 minute walk to the subway but may still be a good area for you as it is a 'hot' area right now and has lots of restaurants, cafes, boutiques, etc.

Hell's Kitchen - has the Ink48 which is a great hotel with great reviews, but subway would be about 10+ minute walk

Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases.

Let us know how you'd like to proceed and we'll take it from there.

Thank you all for your patience with me . . . first timer!

We don't mind walking . . . unless you think the "walking areas" would be unsafe at late hours after attending shows.

$140-160 is fine . . . just hoping for lower.

Here are the zones we are willing to stay in . . . if you see zones that would be inappropriate for my daughter and myself, please don't hesitate to let me know.

CPS

Chelsea

Downtown-Financial

ESB

Hell's Kitchen

LES

MSG

MTE

MTW

SOHO

TS

US-EV

UES

UWS

Generally speaking all the zones are fine and 'safe', but as always in any city you should try to be aware aware of your surroundings at all times.

Comments about any of the zones that you should be aware:

CPS - i will re-iterate that the rooms at the Hudson are really small... i would not include in this zone in my own bidding unless i thought it was going to be substantially cheaper than other areas (or my initial bidding failed)

Chelsea - OK

Downtown-Financial - try midtown locations first, then look here if not successful

ESB - OK

Hell's Kitchen - if you were to land the Ink48, consider if trade-off between 'nice-ness' of hotel and location... it's not the most convenient location and a bit isolated from the heart of the city

LES - i'd only consider after failing in Midtown, not as convenient as midtown

MSG - OK

MTE - OK if fine with up to a 15 minute walk

MTW - OK

SOHO - OK

TS - OK

US-EV - OK

UES - i'd only consider after failing in Midtown, not as convenient as midtown

UWS - i'd only consider after failing in Midtown, not as convenient as midtown

With the above, please confirm which zones you'd like to include and if we should go as high as $160 (we will start lower so if something is available for less you will still land it for less).

Please read your messages before your next reply.

Based upon the parameters already discussed, i would bid MTE, MTW, TS, MSG, ESB, Chelsea (all of them) up to your limit (assuming $160 is still acceptable)... from there, if needed, can discuss further which 'alternate' zones would next be best and within your budget.

Thank you, I read my messages.

Reading other posts I noticed that folks choose several zones at once and then bid a certain amount . . . for example:

Select 4* MSG, Chelsea, MTE, MTW, TS...

        Bid $78, if rejected add re-bid zone…

The way that I've bid in the past is by choosing one zone at a time and going up incrementally in price. The post above suggests that five zones are selected at a time. Am I reading that correctly?

Link to comment

Bidding multiple zones at once helps get the least expensive hotel in any of your acceptable zones... if you bid one zone at a time, there is a chance you win a hotel but could have gotten a less expensive hotel in a different (although still acceptable) zone. Bidding one zone at a time up to your limit makes sense if you're willing to pay more to stay in one zone vs. another zone, but if the goal is the least expensive hotel in any of your acceptable zones, then grouping zones is usually a better approach.

Does that make sense?

When bidding 4* in NYC you have ONE re-bid zone. If you're not familiar with re-bidding please read Priceline Re-Bidding Explained and feel free to ask questions and/or confirm your re-bid zones with the board before proceeding.

I didn't win when I bid last night. No worries though.

I have a question . . . I noticed some 4*s on HOTWIRE for less than $160 (or just a wee bit more). I know the CPS region has the dinky rooms. Do you think I should explore other options on HOTWIRE? I'm getting nervous about prices continuing to rise. Thanks for any input.

Right now, there's a MSG hotel for $145. I know you mentioned the walk to one hotel can be 15 mins. Any other drawbacks?

Link to comment

If you aren't having any success on Price.line and Hot.wire is offering more reasonable rates, then I would definitely consider Hot.wire's options. The main "lesser" CPS option is the Hudson, which offers very small rooms.

Madison Square Garden is a fine area and convenient. Midtown East does have some hotels that are more of a walk, such as the OneUN, which is at the far East border of the zone.

I think my view with NYC is that, if you are not going to be in the room very much, I'd really lean towards something more reasonable.

If you would like help trying to confirm a Hot.wire listing, please provide all information on the listing - price, zone, star rating and the complete list of amenities (including all accessible amenities, if showing.)

If you click on the listing, then click "book now" on the detail page, then click "see all amenities" on the next page, do you also see:

Accessible path of travel,In-room accessibility,Accessible bathroom,Roll-in shower

If so, my guess would be the Wyndham New Yorker.

You're welcome. :)

... and here's a good breakfast suggestion not too far from your hotel:

Best Bagel and Coffee

225 W 35th St (between Seventh Ave and Eighth Ave)

One of my favorite bagel places in the city right now (and certainly in this immediate area). Only downside is that they have very limited seating, so if you can't get a seat at one of the three tables they have or at the counter, i recommend walking to Braodway and then north, hopefully finding an outdoor table on the closed off street to eat your breakfast.... if you make it all the way to Times Square without finding a table, each on the bleachers behind the TKTS Booth and take in all the lights and sounds of NYC.

Have a great time.
