Priceline Hotel: 4/20-4/23 4* MTW/TS anniversary getaway

Hey Everyone! I've used Priceline for areas I'm familiar with, but I do not know NYC that well.

Basically my husband & I (29 & 26yrs old) will be celebrating our 2yr anniversary in the city from 4/20-4/23. We'd love to get a 4* hotel with a good bed, reviews and a great location for under $150 (after taxes) if possible. I won't lie, I appreciate an upscale hotel- especially one for a great rate! :)

We'll probably do shopping, catch a show (broadway or comedy), the times square thing, MOMA, grab drinks & meet up w/friends (they live upper east & downtown). Unfortunately, I have some medical issues that would make my life a bit easier to be located near most of the attractions we go to. Not always an issue, but I like to be prepared.

So I ask, do you recommend Time Square or Midtown West to bid? (I think MidEast may be out of the way) Nicest hotels? Best location? I will most likely start with $105 and go up from there since we're a ways out.

*I do want to add that I'm waiting to hear back from some connections to see if I can get any friends & family discounts.. but will let you know either way and definitely use your link if I do go with PRICELINE.

Thanks!

Welcome to BetterBidding!

The Times Square and MTW zones are adjacent to one another and both generally have easy access to subway stations. It's up to you, but i'll also add that all the 'known' 4* hotels in the MTE are convenient too... it's just some of the hotels at the 3.5* level and lower in this zone that begin to get a bit inconvenient. However, I think the problem you're going to face is $150 'all-in' is usually not enough for a 4* hotel in these zones for this time of year.

Let us know once you decide if you'll be trying PRICELINE for this stay and we'll suggest a strategy at that time.

Okay, I am ready to bid (finally) and would like help with my bidding strategy.

Location: 4* TS, MTE, MTW (preference in that order). I also thought about MSG as we'll be going to LI the day of checkout and it's close to Penn Station. However, I didn't see a 4*, only the Affinia (3.5*) and I've read mixed reviews.

Goal: Be close (within 10mins) to Wicked, MOMA, Top of the Rock, TS, Grand or Pen Station. This is our 2 year anniversary aka Romantic Getaway. We like nice hotels & king sized beds.

Money: I'd like to be $150 all in, but will consider a $150 bid or slightly more if need be.

Let me know if you need anything else to help me bid. I appreciate it! :)

THANK YOU!

I assume that price is more important than zone, in that you'd prefer a less expensive hotel in the MTW zone vs. a more expensive hotel in the TS zone?

Are you fine with any 4* hotel anywhere within the shaded boundaries of your 3 acceptable zones above?

Let us know the above and we'll suggest a strategy for you to follow.

I am on the fence with this. I guess prefer a nicer hotel for the $ over the zone. (As long as zone is still near everything)

Yes, I believe all the 4* offer king beds and a nice rating. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

You stated that you're only looking for a 4* hotel so we're not asking if you want to lower your star rating to a 3.5*... it's more of if you're willing to spend more to be in the TS zone vs. the MTE zone vs. the MTW zone. In other words, did you want to bid up to your limit for a 4* hotel in the TS zone before trying for (what might be) a lower priced hotel in the MTE zone... or is your goal the least expensive 4* hotel in any of the zones mentioned?
I believe all the 4* offer king beds...
I haven't researched this, but all that is guaranteed with PRICELINE is a room that will accommodate double occupancy. While a hotel may offer King beds, they may not be able, or willing, to give you one for this particular stay. As well, King beds may be considered an upgrade at many NYC hotels, so if the hotel is willing/able to give you a room with a King bed, there may be an additional charge.

OK, so given you want to bid up to your limit in each zone before trying the next zone, i would proceed as follows:

At the 4* level in NYC you have FIVE re-bid zones. If you're not familiar with re-bidding please read Priceline Re-Bidding Explained and feel free to ask questions and/or confirm your re-bid zones with the board before proceeding.

If you're knew to the concept it's strongly recommended that you confirm your re-bid zones with the board before bidding (or ask for further explanation if you're confused)

My itinerary may have changed. (Adding one day) Long Island family now wants to do a family thing in the city day of departure so I may spend all nights in City. 4/20-4/24 but do not fly out until 8pm..

Do these hotels hold bags so that I don't have to lug them around the day of check out for 6hours? :)

Thank you for your patience.

I've only gone up to $165 so far and if I do have to stay another night I really don't want to go much higher. May need to consider 3 1/3 stars. But would likely only try TS zone for 3/2*s.

I may also try MSG as Penn station is right there if I have to commute a couple days to LI. (but i do fear getting 2 double beds as I don't want to spend my anniversary separated. lol)

Side note

I did see that the NY Helmsley is having a Buy 2, get 1 night free promo (averaging to be $179 a night), but I don't know much about that hotel.. Just thought I'd pass that on to ppl.

THANKS and hopefully I can talk with the in laws and get the schedule straightened out.

I am still debating the last night, but either way I've decided that MSG is the best area for me since I'll be traveling to LI & back. (Penn Station). I'd be happy with 3.5* (Affinia) or the 2.5* (Hampton Inn, free breakfast, etc). The 3*s don't look so great & I don't want a single double bed for my anniversary weekend. lol So if you could help me with a bidding strategy so that once my dates are firm and I can just dive in, it'd be very much appreciated. :) My price? As low as I can go!!!

Priceline Big Deal Days list MSG 3.5* at $125 & 2.5* at $145

MSG

3.5*

2.5*

PS

This will be cheaper than my original plan so I can spend more $$$ shopping & eating!! Thank you for the help!

If you choose to bid for a 3.5* you could receive a hotel other than the Affinia. While this is the only 3.5* property reported to the board, there could be others, and you could be the first to add a new property to board.

Also, when selecting a star rating, it is the minimum that you are willing to accept, and PRICELINE will always try to upgrade your hotel if possible. So when bidding for a 2.5* property, you still run the 'risk' of receiving a higher rated hotel (ie- one of the 3* hotels you're trying to avoid)

Rates, and strategies, are date specific, so please let us know once your plans are firm and we'll be happy to help at that time.

Okay I'm ready!

We will try for a 3.5* first. Being near Penn is important. I'm sure I can sweet talk or pay for a bed upgrade if needed. Then 2.5*. If I get upgraded to a 3, so be it. It's suppose to be a good thing, right? :)

My dates are: 4/20-4/24

Thank you for all your help :)

At the 3.5* level you have THREE re-bid zones. If you're not familiar with re-bidding please read Priceline Re-Bidding Explained and feel free to ask questions and/or confirm your re-bid zones with the board before proceeding.

(NOTE: 're-bid zone1' is not the same as priceline's Zone1, 're-bid zone2' is not the same as priceline's Zone2, etc, etc)

I am showing availability at both the Affinia website and Expedia, for 4/20-4/23... i don't think they're sold-out, i just think that $150 isn't enough for a 3.5* hotel in this zone at this time. Given you want to go t the MOMA, and you have friend on the Upper East, i would think the ESB and MTE zones would work well for your needs convenience-wise (although it's important to not the 3.5* Millenium UN in the MTE zone, which is a very nice hotel, but a bit far east for many, as it's about a 15 minute walk to the subway)

It's up to you if you'd like to increase your bid, add other nearby zones, or lower your star rating... but given this thread started seeking a 4* hotel, i'm not sure how much a 2.5* property will meet your expectations.
