cshos
Finally got a bid accepted. Had been trying for several days at $10, $11, $12 for a mid or full size car. I accessed Priceline through this "betterbidding.com" website.Mid-size car from Alamo$11 per day for 7 daysTotal price with taxes and fees is $131.09.Rental is for a week in December, 2009We were glad to get Alamo. We've rented from them several times before, but always dealt directly with them. I would watch prices and then call them to match....and we usually got one for around $160 or so total price. NOT SO this year!! Their website was still showing (this morning) $400--$550 to rent a similar car. I'm really glad we bid for the car because this is the best deal we've ever had on a rental. Now I can't wait to spend another great week on Hanalei Bay in Kauai.Hope this encourages someone!! Link to comment

bbrown9506
going 10/8-10/15 myself and have bid up to $17 for a standard. Not sure a midsize would work for 2 adults and 2 young kids, but then again for $11 I might try to make it....will use link on board to bid Link to comment
cshos
I believe compact and midsize both have 3 seat belts in the back....all would have at least two, I'm sure. Keep trying...rates sure do vary. Last week hotwire was showing in the teens 18.95...19.94 ...this week they are in the mid 20's.Hope it works well for you. Link to comment

SX0T
I have been trying for around the same time in December for Kauai. December 18-22.I have been rejected on bids of as low as 12-13, and as high as 20-25.I am wondering how it was possible to get an 11 dollar bid to work.Anyone have any suggestions? Link to comment

cshos
SXOT: I just got an e-mail from hotwire.com about car rentals 10.95 day. (Mid-sized, I think). When I went to their site it was $12.95....in this case the second week of December. I switched the dates to the ones you were asking about and got $56. per day. I also got an e-mail today from Alamo about last minute deals.Like what was mentioned before....the high season in Hawaii starts Dec. 15. You might make a reservation (without pre-paying) with the best deal you can find....then keep on bidding with priceline thru betterbidding. When I got my deal of $11 (mid-size) per day ....the rates were $500.+ for a week. I would encourage you to keep bidding....regularly. It may still be possible to get a good deal during the holiday season.....Hope it goes well for you. :) We are sure getting excited about our upcoming trip. Kauai....Hanalei Bay is our favorite vacation spot. Link to comment

cshos
Just wanted to report that we had a good experience renting the car in Kauai. At the counter of Alamo, I gave the clerk my information....She announced aloud "got a midsize in the $70's, what should I give them?" Someone tossed her a set of keys and said "the Hundai." After trying to sell me insurance, she handed me the keys. We went out to the lot and found a nearly brand new Hundai Elantra, navy blue, with 3770 miles on it. It was a fine car for us.... had a large trunk that held ALL our luggage and got really good gas mileage. Our rental fee for 7 days was $77 plus taxes. Don't know if she was trying to embarrass us, but I actually was quite proud of the good deal we were getting. We have rented directly from that Alamo location in Kauai 4 times before. Always before, they tell you to go out on the lot and pick out a mid-size from any on the lot...keys are in it. We were pleased with the car, the service from Alamo, and the price we paid for it.Dates of travel: Dec. 2-9, 2009 Link to comment
