nextiger
Ive been trying to bid for a car at the Jacksonville airport for 4/1/09-4/6/09. Ever bid I enter gets rejected even up to $60.00 a day. The only thing I could get was an offer for $68.00 a day which came out to be roughly $400.00 for the 5 days. I really cant afford this much and I already have a reservation with dollar for $418.00 if all else fails. Please help if you have any ideas how a driver aged 23 can get a car for a reasonable amount of money. $400.00 seams ridiculous. Thanks Link to comment

thereuare
If you work for a larger employer you can see if they have any affiliations with a rental company to have the low-aged drive fee waived. Also, have you tried 'second tier' companies (the old "rent a wreck") where the fee may be less given the age of their fleet (means less liability) Please use this HOTWIRE and these PRICELINE LINKS: HOTELS, CAR RENTALS, and AIRFARE to begin your travel purchases Link to comment
nextiger
I dont work for anyone who has affiliations with a rental company and as far as I know there are only national chain car rental companies at the airport. If Priceline is making a counter offer of $68.00 a day is it even worth bidding lower than that? Where should I start bidding? Tomorrow is the last day I have to bid so I need a "magical" number to offer. I would just like something cheaper than $400....if I could get $300 it would be great. Colfax
Did Priceline add an Under 25 surcharge to your submitted bid? Does that $68 counteroffer include the surcharge? If it doesn't that Dollar reservation will be cheaper.Priceline's Under 25 policy:Minimum Age Requirements Priceline.com offers car rentals to drivers between the ages of 21 and 24 years old in select locations. Rentals for drivers between the ages of 18 and 20 are available in New York only. Enter the details of your trip and we'll tell you if we can fulfill your request.Rental companies charge renters under the age of 25 Young Renter Fees. These fees typically start at $20 per day and can be as much as $50 per day for high cost locations or more desirable car types. For example, a rental car that normally costs $30 per day could cost an underage driver at least $50 per day. With priceline.com, you should include these additional fees in your offer price. If your request is accepted, you will not be charged any additional Young Renter Fees at the rental counter.Your rental is Weds-Mon. Can you rent from Thurs-Mon? That would be considered a weekend rental and might cost much less. Link to comment
thereuare
I actually see rates drop if you extend your car rental an extra day (so much so that renting for a longer period works out to be less then renting for a shorter period). When booking direct with the rental car companies you can't return the car early and get the lower rate, but you typically can when uising a prepaid rate thru the opaque suppliers such as PRICELINE and HOTWIRE, but it comes with the caveats i recently outlined here: Return Rental Car EarlyPlease use these PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links to begin your travel purchases. nextiger
I ended up not renting a car for this trip and borrowed a friends car. The rates were way to high for an under 25 driver. Sorry for the late update, forgot to update since I didn't book a car. Link to comment
