International Flights-food and meal service

I'm flying internationally next month for the first time since 2000. (Got a great price MIA-WAW $460 RT including taxes, thanks to Priceline.) I was wondering if Long haul Transatlantic flights still have free alcohol in coach class, or if this perk ended when airlines started losing money post 9/11. I am flying on Swiss if that makes any difference.

Any feedback is appreciated. I know this may be a bit off topic, but I figured the Run of House category was appropriate, and seeing as how friendly the adminstrator and other members of this site have always been, I didn't think it would be a problem to post this question.

There is wide variation among airlines on this point, and I don't know what Swiss does these days. Most (all?) US-based carriers charge $5 for a drink these days. United, which was an American holdout and had still been pouring drinks for free in coach, started charging for drinks in coach just one month ago (they don't charge on trans-Pacific flights yet). Most European carriers still include free drinks on board, but Swiss seems to want to position itself as a low-cost carrier within Europe, so they might not.

I would either call the airline, if it's important enough to you, or check the Swiss airline forum on FlyerTalk, here:

Hi Canes98,

I recently flew on Swiss within Europe and was offered both a meal and a drink free of charge. Unless their policy has changed, I would assume the same applies to international flights. Zurich is a beautiful city, so if you have half a day or so between flights, make sure to take the train into the city from the airport. It's well worth the visit!

Have a great time in Poland!

(We started the whole "charging for drinks" thing a few years ago and never did I imagine it would catch on... SORRY!!!!! ) :)

Hi, I've flown on Lufthansa, Alitalia, Air France, and Austrian this year and always on trans-Atlantic flights a choice of beverage has been free. Austrian has instituted a charge for food and some beverages on short flights but a small coffee/tea/bottled water is still available - gratis.
