after booking it on HOTWIRE, I found it on Orbitz for $76 / night. I requested the "double the difference" refund. This was our first and last time using HOTWIRE, we travel often and usually only book on PRICELINE.

It would be great if you might let us know if you get the refund, and with how much fuss... I've never had to do it with Hotwire, but I had to do it with Priceline once. I got the refund from Priceline without too much arguing, plus $10/night on my next hotel booking, which came to a $30 savings. I'm curious how difficult or not Hotwire is to deal with.

Sorry to hear your first HOTWIRE experience wasn't a satisfying one.

HOTWIRE prices are usually good, but sometimes an experience such as yours does occur which is why they offer the Double the Difference Guarantee, and more importantly, why it's important to check rates beforehand and try to see if you can take a guess as to the hotel you will likely be receiving... this helps determine just how good of a deal you think you'll be getting.

Each service has their own benefits and drawbacks and you should weigh each purchase separately to determine which works best for your needs for that particular stay.

Still no response from hotwire re. "double the difference". Will keep you updated....
