Priceline Hotel: Biloxi Help

I'm driving to Florida from Dallas and Biloxi area is a nice mid point. I have seen signs driving thru posted on hotels around $35 - $45, but cant find those prices on either HOTWIRE or Princeline.

Im reluctant to add in Gulf Port as once you get beyond the large hotels, some areas look iffy to me to walk around after dark.

Id prefer the area up around I-10, Priceline calls North Biloxi/Ocean Springs, 2nd choice Biloxi Coast. Dates would be 9/22 and 10/1/07. Only 1 star, 2 stars and 2 1/2 stars available to bid on. So, 2 or 2 1/2 stars preferred.

Am I being naive to think I can get one of these hotels can be had for the same as last minute walk ins? We wouldnt be there long enough that I want to spend a lot on the hotel. Just for one night each way.

How much do you think I would have to bid to get at least 2 stars in one of these two areas? I looked back several months and the only post was several months ago about a failed bid for a 4 star in Biloxi.

Welcome to BetterBidding!

Please use separate threads for each stay (ie- if you end up winning a hotel for both of these nites please report one nite here and start a NEW TOPIC for the other nite)

Would you prefer to bid up to your limit first for a 2.5* in your prefer zone... or are you looking for the least expenisve 2* or better in either zone?

Let us know and we'll advise accordingly.

I'm sure a two star would be fine. I dont have a limit (thats why I was asking how much lol), but I dont want to pay more than I could get by just driving thru and stopping when I see a sign. This might be a area where its better to just drive thru and stop when you see a sign on the highway?

Do you think you could get a 2 star for less than $50 including taxes and fees. I was unable to find a list of winning bids for Biloxi.

Yes, Ill start separate threads if I can book a hotel, thanks.

One night is a Saturday and one a Monday and I was thinking the Saturday might be harder/more expensive to book in Biloxi? Would I do better by waiting until closer to the stay?

Ill start making some bids and if I get one thru will post the winning bid. I tried $31 for 2 star and $32 for 2.5 star. First time on priceline so testing the waters. Newbie here.

Usually these rates are good if you book in advance as well... are you familiar with the names of any of these hotels and did you try calling or booking online to see the rates for your dates? Just walking in is usually the worst way to book a room as the hotel knows that you probably don't want to get in your car and drive up and down the highway going into each hotel to see what's available and how much, so even if mildly expensive, you may just take it to avoid shopping around and just get to your room already.

What does this equate to for a bid pre-taxes and fees?

I think I read Priceline adds approx $7 a night to the stay, so roughly about $39 or $40 is what I meant. I will be on the road, just need a clean place that is safe and near food after driving all day. Days Inn or something like that, so maybe Priceline isnt for me?

It sounds like you think I shouldn't bother with Priceline, thanks for your input. Maybe Priceline works better if the hotel is at your destination so you can enjoy the hotel. Anyway thanks. Ill keep looking. Ill report back if I get a hotel thru one of your links so others can benefit.

thanks again.

I don't think i implied it's "not worth" it, moreso i think i stated that the wrong gameplan would be to just show up at the hotel as you're passing thru. However, the real value in the opaque suppliers is at the higher star ratings... there's very little margin in a $50 hotel to discount it too much. Subtract out priceline's fee and your maximum bid is down to $43 or so. Figure a 10% tax rate (i'm guessing) and you're now down to $39 maximum.

To make sure you don't overbid:

No luck bidding, Iv been raising my bid $2 each day by bidding $1 more on Ocean Springs/Biloxi and then adding another $1 adding in Biloxi Ocean area. Up to $37 plus $11 in taxes and fees.

This morning there is a new promotion on purchasing hotels on Priceline's retail site that came up, $10 cash back after your stay on the cheaper dates and $20 cash back on the more expensive dates I thought Id mention in case anyone else is looking. (Their cheapest date is $69 for a 1 star Days Inn, Biloxi Beach).

Their prices are still very high, in my opinion, compared to what you can get just driving thru. There are always many hotels with discount signs out when you drive thru. Its just that kind of area. Also, the 2 1/2 star on Priceline is no longer available to bid on, only 1 and 2 star choices left yesterday.

I gave up and booked my first night direct, Best Western, Ocean Springs area, easy on/off I-10, 6 miles to the casinos. Their site had $59 for a suite, I called and they gave me $49 + $3.43 tax for my first night, 10/22, a Saturday, breakfast, refrig, micro, coffee etc and very good reviews (4.6 out of 5). They are at $65 for October, so I will keep looking and bidding for 10/1. I'll let you know if a bid goes thru and what I got. (yes, Im using your link).

Thought Id post the new cash back Priceline promotion, maybe it would help someone else. This area could use some more posts and help. It's a fun area to stay. There are surprisingly few choices on either Priceline or Hotwire compared to how many hotels are in the area.

Reporting what did NOT work to save someone else some trouble. I went up to at least $42 in Biloxi and every surrounding area. By the time you add the fee on top and taxes I was within $5 of what it would cost to pick a room that I knew I liked the location and had breakfast included.

Not only Biloxi, but I bid that high for Moss Point and Pascagoula at least $42 in every area. I even tried Hattiesburg. I tried $43 in some areas for ANY hotel, any star, even one star, anywhere in Biloxi, even near the airport which I really didnt want.

The first week of October I was told was some Coastal (automobile?) Cruise week and why it was probably more difficult. I finally settled for what looks like a newly remoldeled Super 8 in Moss Point for $54.00 plus tax, again, by calling them directly. They offer a free breakfast.

Maybe Priceline and hotwire don't work as well for really small towns who dont want to undersell their rooms. I tried every town from Pensacola (near I10) to Mobile and on thru lower Mississippi. If I cant shave off at least $5 a night off the total price, I decided it wasnt worth not dealing direct.

This was my first ever time to bid on a hotel room on Priceline, gave it my best, but it was not to be. Maybe for a larger town it would work better.
