According to the Priceline Hotel List - Hawaii, the Outrigger Reef on the Beach is currently a 3*. Somehow, I got it on my 3rd bid at the 4* level. The confirmation page shows the hotel to be at a Resort level (wierd). The text also references resort level - "Your Price Has Been Accepted. Congratulations, you got your price of $125 for a resort hotel room."

My sequence of bids:

1. WN $100

2. WN A $120

3. WN EC $125 (accepted)

King Maul, sounds like another renovated 3* being upgraded to resort level on PL. Unexpected, but you're on the beach! Were you trying for Hawaii Prince? I don't know if there are renovations ongoing, but you might call the hotel and find out about that. Hope you enjoy your stay! Thanks for sharing the info, I was thinking of 4*N for next month.

The Reef a resort? I don't see how.

It is a 3* at best - the lobby is torn up due to a major renovation. They will be closing one of two towers to renovate. There are very few rooms with an ocean view unless you lean out on the Lanai and look to the left. Most of the rooms in the front tower (off Kalia) only have a view of the hotel ewa of you.

Another issue is the giant Outrigger project that is right across the street - several blocks being completely redone....messy and noisy.

Beware those of you hoping to win the Prince, you'll get upgraded to resort and be unhappy. I looked at a dozen or so sites and could not find any that showed the Reef more than 3.5*. That rating is because it is on the beach.

There is no comparison of 'Resorts' - not even close to the Hilton, or the Marriott, strange....

I wrote a few emails to Priceline, trying to show them that the Outrigger Reef is misrated, but they don't care. :) This is the last reply I received:

Thank you for taking the time to send us an e-mail. We apologize if you

are dissatisfied with our service. We understand that you believe the

Outrigger Reef Resort is not rated correctly on our website as compared

to other leading internet sites.

Customers are our number one priority, and we work hard to make your

experience with us a positive one. Your feedback is appreciated.

Priceline evaluates each participating hotel based on specific criteria

including available amenities and services.

Resorts are not represented with a star rating, but instead by the

amenities they offer to guests.

Also, every hotel is different and not all hotels within a certain chain

will have the same star level rating. We are very careful to rate each

hotel on its own merits and quality and not just on the chain it belongs

to.

Our website may show a certain hotel chain as having a specific rating;

however, different properties and locations may have higher or lower

ratings depending upon our evaluation.

We apologize for the inconvenience and look forward to serving your

future travel needs.
