Hello,

I need to book two rooms in Vegas for 2 nights starting on 9/6
Maybe it's too soon? I don't know.

Anyway I was checking the Express deals and got this offer for $72/nt for a 4* Casino Hotel West of the Strip:

Amenities:

Free Parking

Outdoor Swimming Pool

No Smoking Rooms/Facilities

Fitness Center

Handicapped Rooms/Facilities

Casino

Spa

Restaurant

Swimming Pool

Resort fee is $36.28 ($145.12 for two rooms, two nights)

The website suggests it might be the Rio.

What do you think?

Thanks

It's never too early to book if the hotel is one that you want and is a good discount compared to prevailing rates.

For this Priceline Express hotel:

4* West of The Strip (<-- CLICK HERE and confirm your dates on the landing page) for $72/nite with:
Outdoor Swimming Pool
Free Parking
Restaurant
Indoor or Outdoor Pool
Casino
Fitness Center
==> The Rio would be my best guess for this one

Are you looking to stay off-strip for this trip?  What is your maximum budget (per nite before fees/taxes) for this stay?

Please remember to return to BetterBidding and use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases... or thru our sister site MAPSandHOTELS.com for your regular rate purchases.

Well, I currently have a cancellable reservation at the Stratosphere for $75/nt (taxes included, resort fees NOT included) so what I'm looking for is to upgrade this reservation with the same or similar budget.

I used to bid with the NYOP system, but I checked the Express Deals as it looks the NYOP does not allow the savings it used to in the good ol' days.

Off-strip is OK as long as it is a good deal. But I'd rather avoid downtown Vegas for the moment (I might change my mind if nothing "acceptable" comes out in the other zones).

BTW: I remember self parking being free almost everywhere in Vegas. When did this change? I see most hotels now charge for parking.

Good information to know so we have an idea of what you're trying to accomplish/beat thru PRICELINE / HOTWIRE.

The values are still there with PRICELINE / HOTWIRE, but the 'sweet spot' is with the higher rated and/or more expensive hotels... if a hotel's regular rate is $75/nite there is only so much discounting that can be done and still make it profitable for the hotel (vs. a $150/nite room that has higher margins and therefore can be more deeply discounted).

1 hour ago, Sciamano said:

About 2 years ago MGM properties started to charge for parking, a few months later when Caesars' properties saw that the parking fee was going to stick (and i suspect that they didn't see enough increased business by keeping their parking free) they followed suit; these two companies probably account for close to 85%+ of rooms on the strip.

So more specifically to your own trip, do you place any value to staying more centrally located on the strip?  For example, this offer:

4* HOTWIRE Center Strip - T- Mobile Arena for $94.00
Resort
Pet Friendly
Casino
Smoke Free
Fitness
Pool
Restaurant
Business
Hi-Speed Internet
Golf
Spa
Blind Accessible
Deaf Accessible
Travel Accessible
Room Accessible
Wheelchair Accessible
Bathroom Accessible
Handicapped Parking
Roll-in Shower
==> best guess for this property would be the Park MGM Las Vegas ... and while this may be $20 more than your current reservation at the Stratosphere, it can be argued that this is a better value/deal given its central location.

Closer to your original budget:

3.5* HOTWIRE South Strip - Welcome to Las Vegas Sign for $69.00
Resort
Casino
Smoke Free
Fitness
Pool
Restaurant
Business
Hi-Speed Internet
Golf
Spa
Deaf Accessible
Travel Accessible
Bathroom Accessible
Handicapped Parking
Roll-in Shower
==> The Luxor is my guess for this one, and although not the most centrally located, is still considered to be a 'strip' hotel

So basically it comes down to how you define a 'deal'... is it just based upon lowest price OR do you give any credit for location, star ratings, reviews, etc? (there is no right or wrong answer, as the answer will differ from one user to the next (or even from the same user based upon the needs/goal of the trip)).

Thank you for your help and the clarification on the parking situation. Considering we are going to be four people, will it be more convenient for us to drive to a specific Casino (maybe in the middle of the strip) and park there, or use the monorail? At $5 each, back and forth we would spend $40 for the monorail... How much are parking rates approximately?

Regarding our stay, we are willing to raise our budget if that means getting a more convenient location and/or a higher level of accommodation.

I'm starting to convince myself that I should try to bid and see if we manage to get a 4* property on the strip. In fact, we will also be in Vegas for another two nights stay on August 25th.

I'm not sure if it would be convenient to start bidding so early. Maybe I can wait a couple of months and see if any rates decrease or maybe new offers show up. What do you think?

BTW, are the SLS and the LinQ any good? They seem to have pretty low rates compared to the other properties.

Thanks. Of course any future reservations/bidding for this stay will be done through your links.

I'm not sure of parking rates at the hotels as i've only rented a car once in Vegas, and it was before hotels started to charge for parking.  If you drink adult beverages at all i would recommend not driving.

I'm personally not a huge fan of the monorail as a means for transportation as it typically goes to the waaay back of each hotel, so by the time you walk to the monorail stop at your hotel, wait for the tram, arrive at your destination hotel, and walk to the area you're heading, it can be a considerable amount of time.  It can be worthwhile if you're using the monorail to go from Point A to Point B and then spending all of your time around Point B, but as a means to get from one casino to the next is not worthwhile, imo.  However, note that the Las Vegas Monorail also offers unlimited ride passes that are good for 24 hour increments.

However, your best option (especially with 4 people) is to take Uber or Lyft as most rides should be under $20 (unless you're going downtown).  For example, current estimate for Rio to Bellagio is $10... Stratosphere to Bellagio is $11; and you get door-to-door service.

The other option is the local bus which runs from the Strip to Downtown with stops along the way (one of the stops being at the Stratosphere).  It's not the quickest ride, but at $8 for a 24 hour pass it's certainly affordable (although to get east/west of the strip would require a transfer to another bus, and that complicates matters a bit and would not be worth it, imo).

So what would be your budget?  What about something like the Park MGM Las Vegas above?

I should try to bid

Just make sure you're comfortable with anywhere in the shaded boundaries of the zone... you don't want to end up all the way south at, for example, the Luxor, if you're intention is to stay mid-strip.  As well, bidding may not save you very much vs. a PRICELINE EXPRESS deal when combined with our BetterBidding Priceline Coupon, and the latter enables you to have a bit more control/guess as to the actual hotel you may likely win.

Depends upon how much you like the current offers.  Rates in Las Vegas change more quickly than any other hotel market in the United States (perhaps the world??)... but the rates don't always go down; sometimes the early rates are the best you see and they only go up from there.  There is a 22K person convention that starts on Sept 8 and a large percentage will likely come at least the nite before.

You can also use our sister site RateDrop which will monitor rates for you from both PRICELINE EXPRESS, HOTWIRE, and regular retail prices for a specific property.  Set the price that you'd like to be notified and if the price drops below that price you will get an email alerting you of the Rate Drop.

I have not stayed at either, but SLS is located near the Stratosphere and that is not where i would choose to stay when visiting Vegas (as per my previous comments above i would stay more central on the strip).  The Linq went thru an extreme makeover a few years back and the inside is fairly fresh and clean looking.  The city has also done a very good job and growing The Promenade that is adjacent to the property that has a lot of bars, restaurants, the HighRoller, as well as a zipline.  This is a bit of a 'young' hangout area (i'm showing my age, by young i refer to the 25-35 year old crowd) with lots of the bars having live music, beer pong games, etc.

Thank you so much for all this valuable information.

Based on what you told me and the fact that we are going to Vegas with my in-laws who have limited walking resistance, I think it would be best for us to stay somewhere in the middle of the strip.

Treasures Island could be a great option (what do you think?) as it is more or less in the middle of everything and it even offers free parking for guests. Even though it costs a little more we could take it into consideration for its location. I've seen good rates on Hotwire for the TI (the amenities and the TripAdvisor rating/number of reviews suggest the offer is for this property).

Harrah's could be an option too.

I don't see any offer for it, though as the only 3.5* that shows up at $69/nt, looks like the Stratosphere (amenities: Free parking, Free internet, Resort, Casino, Smoke-free rooms, Fitness center, Pool(s), Restaurant(s), Internet access, Golf nearby, Accessible for visually impaired, Accessible for hearing impaired, Accessible path of travel, In-room accessibility, Accessible bathroom, Accessible parking, Roll-in shower) which, after your considerations, we are not considering a viable option anymore.

Although I have no experience with these properties (I have stayed at the Mirage, the Luxor and the MGM Grand before) they seem like acceptable options considering we have no big necessities: all we need is a clean nice room in a comfortable position so that my in-laws can enjoy their stay without getting too tired. We don't gamble (of course we will, just for fun, but it's not the goal of our trip, as Vegas is just a stop on our way from LA to Yellowstone NP) therefore we don't care about how the gambling halls look like or anything.

I'm seeing on HOTWIRE when searching for 2 rooms for 9/6-8:

4* HOTWIRE Center Strip - Forum Shops for $126.00
Free Parking
Resort
Casino
Smoke Free
Fitness
Pool
Restaurant
Business
Hi-Speed Internet
Golf
Spa
Blind Accessible
Deaf Accessible
Travel Accessible
Room Accessible
Bathroom Accessible
Handicapped Parking
Roll-in Shower
==>  Best guess would be Treasure Island

Thank you for keeping us updated on what you decide.

Oh, I didn't see that when I looked earlier.

$126 + resort fee might be a little too high for our intended budget.

I mean: if we book the Stratosphere with free parking at half that price, we might drive and leave the car at any other Casino in the middle of the strip and even if we had to pay for parking we would still save money...

I'll discuss this with my family and take a decision soon.

Thank you very much for your time and help, I really appreciate and will show it by booking through your links when we decide what to do.

Why not this one which is centrally located and just $20 more than your current back-up reservation (about the cost of parking i would think).

I was just in Vegas last month and had some time to kill between checking out of my hotel and my flight so i took the bus roundtrip from the Strip to Downtown... stopping at the Westgate (i wanted to see the property and their sportsbook as i had never been).  On the way back after walking around Fremont Street for a bit i decided to stop at the Stratosphere as i haven't been there in many years.  However, i chose not to get off the bus as i didn't feel comfortable in the area.  I would have no problem getting off the bus and walking to the hotel, but i was thinking ahead that i wouldn't want to be standing at that bus stop solo for 10-20 minutes. (and i will add that i consider myself to be fairly city-savy, so it's not like i'm not comfortable in large city environments or that seeing homelessness puts me in an uncomfortable situation... but part of being 'city-savy' is not putting myself in situations where i see the potential of something negative happening.  If i was with a few other friends i would probably not have had a concern, but traveling solo at the time i didn't want to be alone in this area at the bus stop with an unknown amount of time waiting for the bus).  If you think the bus is something you would be comfortable with that is another option to get to the main part of the strip ($8/pp for an unlimited pass... cheaper if buy multiple days)

Another thing to keep in mind if you decide to drive is that most parking garages are not right next to the casino entrances... they are usually a bit of a walk to the main part of the hotel; the part of the hotel closest to the strip is prime real estate, the further back from the strip you go the less important the real estate is, so the garages are often built 'quite a ways' back from the main part of the hotel.  But again, why drive when an uber will cost you about $10/each way... do u think driving to a hotel and parking is going to be less (or substantially less) than $20/day?

I don't know the Stratoshere's parking rules (if it's free for everyone or only  hotel guests), but you could drop family and luggage off at a strip hotel where you are staying, drive to a free garage, and then take bus/uber/taxi to the strip hotel... do the opposite in reverse.  Of course you would have to check the 'rules' to make sure you could leave your car in the garage for 2-3 days without causing an issue, but that is another option (although it does seem like a lot of work to me in order to save $20 once it's all said and done with taking bus/uber/taxi which will eat into some of the savings)

I assume you're driving to Vegas from some other location? (if so, where from)

It's your trip, money, budget, and you know your needs better than we do... but my recommendation is to stay directly on the main part of the strip.

We are driving from LA, then we will move on to Salt Lake City.

We will plan a strategy for the use of the car and parking in Vegas and based on that we'll decide where to stay.

One question: does priceline always list the resort fee on the checkout page?

I've just stumbled across this property:

4.5-Star Casino Hotel

The Strip - Northwest Area

4.5-Star Casino Hotel

The Strip - Northwest Area

Bed Choice Available

Pets Allowed

Outdoor Swimming Pool

Airport Shuttle

Fitness Center

Handicapped Rooms/Facilities

Casino

Spa

Restaurant

Swimming Pool

And when I tried the checkout there were no resort fees listed in the total...

What property do you think it is? Could it be they don't charge any resort fees?

Rates are very interesting if the total is what's listed!

For this Priceline Express hotel:

4.5* The Strip - Northwest (<-- CLICK HERE and confirm your dates on the landing page) for $133/nite with:
Pets Allowed
Outdoor Swimming Pool
Restaurant
Airport Shuttle
Indoor or Outdoor Pool
Casino
Fitness Center
==> best guess would be The Mirage which does charge a resort fee (just as all of the hotels on the strip that i'm aware of)

Sorry, I forgot to mention that the offer above was for the dates of 8/25 to 8/28. This could be a different option in our trip, so I was checking the offers on those dates too.

The property above was listed at EUR 50/nt (sorry but Priceline only shows prices in Euros to me), and no resort fee was calculated/mentioned during checkout (which happens instead when simulating checkout at any other property), that's why I asked.

Not my first time in Vegas (it will be my sixth, the third for my wife and the second for my in-laws), and I probably forgot to mention we live in Italy.

Check these screenshots:

https://ibb.co/Z1vVmC5
https://ibb.co/DgXncG7

Could this be a new property?

Edit: it's probably the Mirage, since resort fees are not shown when buying rooms at the Mirage either:

https://ibb.co/m53gh5v

BTW, I've found out that guests at MGM properties can park at any MGM property for free (you only pay the daily parking fee at the hotel you are staying at):

From the MGM website:

"Registered Hotel Guests:

Your 24 hour parking fee provides you with in-out privileges within the same parking type (self or valet) across all MGM Resorts Las Vegas destinations within the same 24 hour period (subject to availability)"

Therefore we might go for the Luxor or the Excalibur (which are pretty inexpensive but still decent) and then use our car in Vegas to go to the center of the Strip by parking for free at the Mirage or the Park MGM...

When will your dates be firm?  Are your dates dependent upon which hotels are offered and/or their prices OR other aspects of your trip.

Good info to know... and perhaps reason to take another look at the Park MGM Las Vegas from HOTWIRE above for $94/nite.

We have decided to add a stop that was not originally planned, so we are rearranging our itinerary to make room for it. We are most probably going to be in Vegas for three nights starting on August 25th.

It's still not 100% sure but I'd say it's 95%.

I'll take that into consideration when checking the rates for the new dates of our stay. We are definitely going to stay at an MGM property, though, since the benefit to park at any MGM owned casino for a "flat" daily fee is very useful for us.

The Mirage at $55 is also very tempting. Still, I am not the one who's paying for this stay therefore I can only give suggestions, but in the end I'll have to have my in-laws take the final decision on this.

I will keep you posted.

Thanks a lot for your patience and help.

Hi, sorry for the long delay.

Unfortunately a very close relative has died in a car accident last week, and our US trip has been placed on stand-by for the time being.

I apologize for not being able to go through with this reservation at the moment.

I hope this will change soon. In that case I will come back for your help again.

Thank you very much for your time and sorry again for not being able to reward the board with a much deserved commission.
