Good evening!

I am looking for a great deal on a hotel in the Gaslamp Quarter Or Little Italy area of San Diego. I would prefer the little Italy area due to cheaper prices. My travel date will be January 19-January 21st. I will be booking 2 rooms to accommodate 6 people (3 in each room). I would prefer a 3 or 3.5 star hotel. My budget is $450-$590. I’ve been searching primarily on Hotwire.

Ive found the following listing on Hotwire:

3.5 star new to Hotwire in downtown- little Italy area at a rate of $97/ night. Total : $470.37

Complimentary: Free breakfast & free internet

Amenities: Airport shuttleBoutique hotelBusiness centerKitchenettePet friendlySmoke-free rooms

The last person who booked received the Urban Boutique Hotel

My questions are as follows:

1. Which hotel do you think this will be?

2. I’ve never used Priceline before but i am Willing to bid on a 4 star hotel in the Little Italy area and the Gaslamp Quarter area. Priceline is saying the median price for a 4 star hotel in that area is $209. Do you think $70/ night is a good point to start bidding?

4. Should i book this deal or bid on Priceline? Do you think bidding would help reduce the price for a higher quality room? Or am i being unrealistic?

Thank you so much for your input!

Welcome to BetterBidding!

I believe there are more amenities then what you have posted above as HOTWIRE has a new interface that does not show the complete set of amenities unless you search using the EASY VIEW TAB of our BiddingHelper.com tool. (always use this method for your searches/purchases to ensure you're seeing the complete amenity set and for an easy comparison of PRICELINE vs. HOTWIRE, as well as to use our new IS THIS A GOOD PRICE feature).

If you repeat your search using our BiddingHelper.com tool... use the HOTWIRE EASY VIEW tab and then click the GREEN BUTTON next to this listing, do you see more amenities (including any accessible amenities) then what you have listed above? Using this method, below is the full list of amenities i'm seeing for the 3 star hotel in this zone when searching for your dates:

3* HOTWIRE Downtown - Little Italy for $98.00
Complimentary Breakfast
Free Internet
Pet Friendly
Boutique
Shuttle
Smoke Free
Business
Hi-Speed Internet
Kitchenette
Spa
==> best guess for this one would be the Urban Boutique Hotel

The issue with bidding on PRICELINE is that they only guarantee double occupancy, after that it's at the discretion of the hotel and what if they assign you to two rooms with only one bed and are unable (or unwilling) to accommodate your request for a room with 2 beds (or a pullout sofabed or rollaway to accommodate an additional guest?)

You could also consider (confirm your dates on the landing page after clicking the link provided below):

3* Downtown - Little Italy
Restaurant
Airport Shuttle
Fitness Center
No Smoking Rooms/Facilities
==> my guess here would be the The Porto Vista Hotel, and although this is PRICELINE EXPRESS (which as per above only guarantees double occupancy) this offer does offer a 'Bed Choice' and one of those options is for a room with 2 Queen beds for $111/nite (and using the board discount in the Priceline Coupon page will bring this down to just about the same price as the HOTWIRE offer above).  Although technically your reservation would only be for double occupancy, i don't know of anyone who has yet had an issue showing up with 3/4 guests when a specific room type was booked and the room is designed to accommodate the number of guests in the group (so a slight risk involved but i'd consider it to be minimal, imo, but something you would need to decide if you are comfortable with)

Please remember to return to BetterBidding and use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases... or thru our sister site MAPSandHOTELS.com for your regular rate purchases.

Let us know what you decide and how it goes or how we can be of further help.

Do you think this same concept-hotels accommodating extra guests- might be a possibility with the PRICELINE bidding option? (i understand that Priceline only guarantees double occupancy)

No, the same does not apply with PRICELINE bidding.

The difference is that in the example above, the PRICELINE EXPRESS property is offering you a specific room configuration that can accommodate 3/4 guests in each room... with PRICELINE bidding you could receive a room with only one bed (and therefore not be able to accommodate 3/4 guests in the room).

The priceline express offer above offers a room for only $84/nite, but this is a 'room assigned at check-in' and taking this options (or the 1Queen Bed or 1King Bed options) i would consider to be high risk since you can't guarantee that any of these rooms can accommodate 3/4 guests (no assurance there is a pullout sofabed and/or if the room can fit a rollaway, should the hotel even have them on-site) ... booking the 2Queen bed option is substantially lower risk.  You could get a hotel that charges extra for any occupancy greater than 2, but many front desk clerks prefer to avoid any conflict (afterall, they are in the hospitality business) and there are also ways to lessen this risk even further... only have one/two adults per room go to the desk upon check-in while the other(s) go someplace else in the lobby (if the hotel is large enough, for example in Las Vegas), walk around the block, or sit at the nearby Starbucks/coffee until the others meet up with them after dropping off the bags in the room.

Thank you for your help! You've been extremely instrumental thus far. I have a few more questions. I've looked up the Portio Hotel and the Urban Boutique but due to the hit and miss reviews and pictures of bed bugs, (Yuck!), I've decided to search for a better room. I am currently on your bidding helper website comparing rooms from both Priceline Express and Hotwire Hot Deals. I’ve decided to opt out of the Priceline Bidding because I need two double or queen size bed in each room. My new findings are listed below.

I'll start with Priceline Express:

There is a 3 star rating hotel listed in the Gaslamp Quarter for $131/night. The amenities list only says “ No smoking rooms”, and the hotel is similar to the Hyatt and Hilton. Do you happen to know why the website says "bed choice available" but is not allowing me to select a bed choice? Unless the listing says "bed choice available", this means that we could possibly be stuck with one bed in each room due to the double occupancy that Priceline guarantees?

3* Gaslamp Quarter for $131
No Smoking Rooms/Facilities

Here's my new option with HOTWIRE:

A 3 star rating hotel for $126/night. Here are the amenities listed: FULL AMENITIES: Free breakfast, Free Internet, Airport shuttle, Smoke-free rooms, Fitness center, Pool(s), Business center, Self-service laundry, Internet access, Accessible for visually impaired, Accessible for hearing impaired, Accessible path of travel, In-room accessibility, Accessible bathroom, Accessible parking, Roll-in shower. Hotels in or near my zone are Urban Boutique ($154), Holiday Inn Express San Diego Downtown ($160), and the La Pensione ($401). It allows me to select 2 queen size beds, which is what I’ll need. Do you think that this hotel is the Holiday Inn Express?

I'm not seeing 'Bed Choice' listed for this PRICELINE EXPRESS offer:

3* Gaslamp Quarter for $131
No Smoking Rooms/Facilities
==> best guess for this one would be the Staypineapple At Hotel Z, but as you noted no way to ensure the room type since no option is given

Here is an example of an offer that indicates a Bed Choice:

3.5* Gaslamp Quarter for $142 ($151 for 2 Double beds)
Business Center
Restaurant
Fitness Center
No Smoking Rooms/Facilities
==> The Sofia Hotel Downtown is my guess here.

Keep in mind that even if you select a room with 2 beds, technically your reservation is still only for double occupancy, although i don't know of anyone who has yet had an issue showing up with 3/4 guests when a specific room type was booked and that room is designed to handle the number of guests that are in the group.

For the HOTWIRE property you don't mention the zone name but i think it is this one that you're referring to:

3* HOTWIRE Downtown - Little Italy for $131.00
Complimentary Breakfast
Free Internet
Shuttle
Smoke Free
Fitness
Pool
Business
Laundry
Hi-Speed Internet
Blind Accessible
Deaf Accessible
Travel Accessible
Room Accessible
Bathroom Accessible
Handicapped Parking
Roll-in Shower
==> if this is the one, best guess here would be the Holiday Inn Express San Diego Downtown
