bluean9el
Hi there - I'm trying to book a hotel in San Juan/Condado area for Oct. 17 - 21. I'm searching both Hotwire and Priceline Express. Here is the deal I'm interested in on Priceline Express: 4 Star Hotel Old San Juan - Condado Area - $151/nightAmenities: swimming pool, fitness center with a bed choice There is a cheaper 4 Star Hotel Old San Juan - Condado Area but it looks to me like it's the Sheraton and I don't really want that hotel. Its amenities are: Free Internet, Swimming Pool, Pets Allowed, Fitness Center, Restaurant, Casino, Business Center. It comes in at $92/night Can you please help me identify both? I'm also looking at two properties on Hotwire: One is in Condado: $91/night (again, I assume this is the Sheraton)Free Internet, Pet friendly, Casino, Smoke Free Rooms, Fitness Center, Pool(s), Restaurant(s), Business Center, Self service laundry, Internet access, Golf Nearby, Spa Services, Accessible for the blind, Accessible for the deaf, Accessible path of travel, In-room accessibility, Wheelchair accessible, Accessible bathroom, Handicapped parking, Roll-in shower One is in Old San Juan: $179/nightFree Internet, Boutique Hotel, Smoke Free Rooms, Fitness Center, Pool(s), Restaurant(s), Business Center, Internet access, Accessible path of travel, In-room accessibility, Accessible bathroom, Handicapped parking, Roll-in shower Can you also help me identify these? Thank you! Link to comment

Its amenities are: Free Internet, Swimming Pool, Pets Allowed, Fitness Center, Restaurant, Casino, Business Center. It comes in at $92/night ==> agree the Sheraton Puerto Rico Convention Center Hotel is likely Hot.wire: One is in Condado: $91/night (again, I assume this is the Sheraton) ==> Sheraton Puerto Rico Hotel and Casino One is in Old San Juan: $179/night ==> Hotel El Convento Thanks for using the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board. bluean9el
Thank you for your help! I would really love a 4* hotel within that area for around $120-$140 that's NOT the Sheraton (because reviewers have noted that it's relatively far from all things touristy). Do you have any suggestions on how to make other choices appear on Hotwire/Priceline? El Convento is ok but steep at $170ish. It gets me to a total of over $700 for four nights. Thanks! Romelle
Admittedly the Sheraton is relatively far from the touristy things. But it is a lovely hotel and there is a public bus ($.75) running to Old San Juan and to various beach areas. Romelle PS - I did walk it once, and wouldn't recommend that technique. Not counting the time I was lost, I'd estimate it at about 45 minutes. Link to comment
thereuare
Sometimes you can get different offers to appear if you change your occupancy (2adults/2children, 3adults, etc) but i tried for your dates and still see the same offer. Have you considered the Isla Verde zone? Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. bluean9el
I haven't considered Isla Verde because I wasn't sure how close to everything that area is. I want to do touristy things like visit Old San Juan, of course, and do not plan on driving. Would you recommend that area? It would be nice to be on the beach. Link to comment
thereuare
Have you thought about exactly which 'touristy things' you'd like to do? Old San Juan is the tourist shopping area and has the fort El Morro. The rain forest is far away and would require a car or taking an organized tour... Isla Verde has the nice beaches.... Baccardi Factory you (typically) take a ferry from Old San Juan. I think a taxi between Old San Juan and Isla Verde is about $20-$25, and i imagine there are likely public busses that run between the two for significantly less, but perhaps Romelle would be in a better position to answer that than i would. Romelle
Yes, there is public bus service between Isla Verde and Old San Juan. It is about 6 miles. Three different lines T5, 21 and 53 and $.75 (last time I was there). The bus stops are not necessarily well marked, but the hotels in the immediate area are prepared to help. For that matter, the buses are not necessarily well marked. The street the buses mostly run along is fairly close to the beach. Once you get into the Condado area, there is also the free green trolley to/from Old San Juan. By all means, ride the trolley - all three routes are interesting, and some vistas of the water absolutely spectacular. The ferry ride to Baccardi is interesting and the free tour fun. It does also take a very short taxi or shuttle ride from the ferry stop to the actual factory. I tried for a long time to find an actual current bus map or current schedules to carry with me. I don't think they exist. There is an out-of-date and incomplete one on the web. There is a big one posted on the wall of the bus terminal in Old San Juan. Some of the drivers have quite a bit of English, but don't count on it. However, the other riders will kindly and cheerfully help. The Isla Verde area is very near the airport, so the taxi ride there will be less expensive and quicker than your other zone options. Taxis are quite regulated at the San Juan airport. A big sign shows rates to the various areas. A managed line so one gets their turn without having to be aggressive. Other rides can be more interesting. Ask first, and maybe check with the hotel to get a general idea of what is likely. Romelle Link to comment
bluean9el
Wow, this is awesome information, Romelle. Thanks so much. After sleeping on it, I think that we'll be able to tour Old San Juan in one day and spend the rest relaxing on the beach so now I'm reconsidering my options of staying in Isla Verde. I'm eyeing a voucher for four nights in San Juan Water Beach club for less than $550 and might pull the trigger on that. I'll keep you posted. Link to comment

Romelle
hilton caribe $95 4 star... better off booking with hilton direct...not happy! For bluean9el's dates - Oct 17-21, 2014 - the Hilton Carib on their web site is $214. They do have a special lower rate for AARP, seniors, government and probably some other categories - $189.
