You can bid $35 at Edison-East Brunswick on 2.5* to get Clarion Hotel, and take the NYC bus, or you can just drive and park at Exchange Place/Jersey City parking lot, then you are the same as if you stay at Hyatt Regency. Or,

You can bid $45 at Elizabeth-Newark on 3* to get Wyndham Newark Airport, there is free shuttle bus to airport at P4 parking to take free Airtran then NJ Transit to NYC. or

You can bid $43 at Elizabeth-Newark on 2.5* to get Country Inn & Suites if you have car, parking free, and take free shuttle to Newark Airport P4, then free Airtrain, one stop to NJ Transit station to NYC., or

You can bid $46 at Newark on 3* to get Hilton at Gateway that you can walk right to Newark Penn Station to take PATH to NYC, $1.5 one way, just couple stops from Hyatt Regency at Jersey City.

WARNING: You could get the Hilton and walk to the PATH... but you also could get a different hotel and not have easy access to the PATH train at all. :)

It's about 25 minutes to Downtown and 35 minutes to midtown. I'll also add that's it's not a nice area... there are some good restaurants in the 'ironbound' area nearby, and although it's walkable, it would be better (read: safer) to take a taxi for the short trip.

BTW, the 1* featured on Hotwire is the Ramada Limited in Jersey City which has both a free shuttle to EWR and is two blocks from the Journal Square PATH station. The walk from the PATH station at midnight is not for the faint of heart, but I have already done it around 10:00 PM and had no problems. The rate on HW is $116 (Hyatt is up to $132).

i would suggest you consider seacacus meadowlands in NJ, safe, locals just take the bus (NJ Transit), takes you from the door of most hotels there to Port Authority Bus Terminal (basically 42 st Station on the subway - blue line A/C/E). Cost is about US$2.85 each way (bargain!) little bit to lug your luggage but the locals are accomodating nonetheless and 20 min ride. Buses leave every 20 mins to 1am or so!

bid with care as you could end up at the Sheraton Meadowlands, Homestead Studio, Wellsley Inn, Howard Johnsons, Days Inn, or Extended Stay America in the Hotwire "Secaucus-Meadowlands" zone or the Priceline "Meadowlands-Rutherford" or "Secaucus-North Bergen" you would need a car to get to a bus stop or take the hotel shuttle to the bus stop. I would not want to return from a day in the city and have to wait for a hotel shuttle bus in Secaucus, braving the elements. :)
