Priceline Hotel: help with bidding for Jersey City hotel

When is the best time to bid for a hotel on Priceline for a one night stay 9/7/13? I will be taking a cruise 9/8 out of Port Liberty and it was suggested that a hotel in Jersey City near the light rail line might be a good option. The light rail will take me to the port and then I will have to call a cab to take me the rest of the way. I was interested in one of the 4 star hotels listed on Priceline for Jersey City. They are all in good proximity to the light rail. I've just offered a bid of $110 (lowest listed price of $194) but was turned down. Generally speaking, are lower bids accepted closer to the date? From experience, when would be the best time to start bidding?

Also, does anybody have any other suggestions for a clean, comfortable and close to light rail hotel?

Thank you for you help.

As far as when to bid, see the related 'Bid Early or Close to Check-in' link in our PRICELINE FAQ.

How are you getting to the NYC-metro area? (if flying or train, which airport/station do you arrive at)

I will be arriving by plane to JFK, but will have a friend picking me up for dinner in lower Manhattan before dropping me off at a hotel. She lives on Long Island and Jersey City seemed more convenient than Newark or Staten Island.

Thank you for pointing me in the right direction to find the answers to my questions. I'll continue researching.

There are only a handful of 4* hotels in the Jersey City zone and currently they are priced beyond your budget.

Newark is not a viable option as it's out of the way when coming in from JFK and there is no light rail access for your trip to Bayonne the next day.

Is there any interest in staying directly in Manhattan? While this too would be beyond your current $110 bidding, you may be able to get a 3* hotel for ~$140-$150 which should serve your needs for just one nite and also give you the opportunity to take in the city for a nite.

If you visit our sister site Pre Cruise Hotelshotels you can see a map of the pier and how there are virtually no hotels in the immediate area (and while Newark Airport seems close notice the large body of water between there and Bayonne, making access a very circuitous feat. If you zoom in on the map you can even see the light rail tracks and follow-it along into Jersey City. ;)

At Pre Cruise Hotels i do see the Candlewood Suites for $150/nite but it's non-refundable so you'd need to be happy with this selection... and perhaps spending a little more would be worthwhile to take in a nite in Manhattan.

Thank you for all that information. I think I would still prefer staying in Jersey City and will keep tabs on the rates for the 4* hotels. I'll continue to "name my price" and hope to get a winning bid.

I booked at the Doubletree as a backup. The reservationist indicated that there were several conventions in their facility during that period.

What is the room rate of this back-up reservation?
