Scorp
Now have to figure out how to get the taxes and thingys back! Not sure what you mean by thingys, but Priceline does not pass on the cost of GST to begin with, so there is no refund available from Priceline stays. In Vancouver, you will pay a nonrefundable 10% hotel tax. If you booked directly with the hotel, you would also pay 7% GST, for which you could apply for a refund if you are a visitor to Canada. But Priceline does not charge the GST. Link to comment
thereuare
Do you recall your highest bid immediately before this acceptance? Please use this HOTWIRE and these PRICELINE LINKS: HOTELS, CAR RENTALS, and AIRFARE to begin your travel purchases Link to comment
wentworth99
I wish, T, I think I was going up by about $5 so $95 sounds about right. And, Scorp, you are correct, I misread the Priceline info about taxes. So do they justy up their own fees as 19% seems high if we pay no taxes as non-Canadians? Or am I being an ungenerous Pom?William Link to comment
Scorp
There are actually three separate taxes, the GST at 7% (federal tax), the hotel occupancy tax at 8% (provincial), and a 2% tourism tax (municipal or city tax). Non-residents are entitled to apply for a refund of the 7% GST only. The other 10% is non-refundable, whether you are Canadian or not. :) Priceline assumes purchasers of accommodations on its web site are non-Canadian, and are eligible for a rebate of the GST, and therefore does not collect it. Actually, you can not apply for a GST refund unless you submit receipts that total at least $200 Cdn before taxes, and each individual receipt must be for $50 Cdn before taxes, so if Priceline did charge you the GST for your upcoming stay in Vancouver, you would not be eligible for a refund based on this single purchase alone. :) Priceline does people a huge favour by saving them the hassle of dealing with the GST. I wouldn't complain too much about the remaining 10% tax, there are higher percentages in many US cities, don't you agree? :o Link to comment
