titleman
I sure this has been covered before and if so would you give me a link so I can read it.I'm trying to determine if there any correlation between the rating systems of Hotwire and Priceline or how does each of them arrive at their ratings. An info would be appreciated. tx Link to comment
AaronJB
Each service has their own rating system, and while hotels may be the same on both services in many cases, there are also many cases where ratings may vary (and infrequently may vary quite a bit - it may have changed since, but a hotel that is considered by most services to be 3.5*-4* in NYC was showing up as a win in the 2.5* category due to lack of restaurant and one or two other common higher-end amenities.)The services are completely different though, and HOTWIRE having a particular hotel showing for a particular set of dates does not mean that PRICELINE also has discount inventory for that hotel. Additionally, the retail and discount sides of both services are separate - there may be hotels that participate on the regular rate side of the service that do not participate on the discount side.In terms of HOTWIRE, from the HOTWIRE website: "How we calculate our star ratings:For our Hotwire hot Rates, we start with an average rating from other top travel sites. Then we make adjustments based on customer feedback. (We receive over half a million reviews per year.) Since hotel chains often have properties in different categories, we base our ratings on each hotel, not on the chain as a whole."http://www.hotwire.com/travel-information/hotels/hotel-ratings.jspThank you for using the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches. travelguy2
Anecdotally, and completely from my own experience:I don't think it's that uncommon to find Hotwire rating a hotel higher than Priceline. (Generally 1/2 star to 1 star higher)I do find it is much less common to find Priceline rating a hotel higher than Hotwire. Not to say it doesn't happen, but the opposite happens a lot more. IME.
