Hi there,

This is Melanie from Germany and we are going to travel to NYC from 5/20 til 5/24.

We already used your great advices in 2010 and now we need your help again.

We are 2 couples and need 2 double rooms in a good area.3 stars and not more then 110 USD per night!

Do you have any good strategies for us.

We are looking forward to your support!!!

Many greetings from Germany

Melanie

Welcome back...

Based upon current rates, your $110 budget will not likely be enough for a 3* or better hotel for these dates... seasonally spring is an expensive time in NYC. Using MAPS and HOTELS.com (or any other resource) what is the best rate you're able to find at a 3* or better property?

Hi,

okay, seems that 3* are really too expensive...

So what do you think about 2* in the following areas in centre of NYC?

for example:

MTW

Chelsea

Times Square

MSG

Empire State building

Can you recommend these? We checked the hotels in advance via www and it seems there are some nice ones included.

What do you think???

Thanks a lot...

Melanie

We usually don't recommend the lower rated hotels in NYC as even hotels of the same star rating can vary greatly from one property to the next. While there may be some 2* hotels which meet your needs, there may be some which do not, and with PRICELINE you can't choose which type it is that you will get. ;)

Ultimately it's up to you how you'd like to play this one, but even at the 2* level $110 isn't a sure thing for these dates.

Please follow-up your Hotwire San Francisco thread by including the amenities shown before your purchase (how to still view these are given in our reply to your post).

Then reply to this thread and we'll have a look at rates for your dates above.

We can try for a 3* up to $150 to start, then if that is rejected we'll revise to a 2.5* (or discuss some of your other options, such as, is SPLITTING YOUR PRICELINE BID an option, or as per above, staying one nite at the beginning/end of your trip by the airport)

Do note that in the CPS zone is the Hudson Hotel which has notoriously small rooms, and in MTE some hotels at 3.5* and below can be up to a 15 minute walk to the subway. Assuming both of these conditions are acceptable, i'd try bidding as follows:

At the 3* level in NYC you have ONE re-bid zones. If you're not familiar with re-bidding please read Priceline Re-Bidding Explained and feel free to ask questions and/or confirm your re-bid zones with the board before proceeding.

Select 3* MTW, MTE, CPS, Cheslea...

Bid $95, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $100, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINE

While i do think that $150 is, and will be, difficult for these dates during a peak season in NYC, are you sure you want to lower your star rating 4 months before your stay? Is SPLITTING YOUR PRICELINE BID or staying by the airport for one nite an option?

If not HOTWIRE does have what i'm guessing to be the Best Western Convention Center for $163/nite... not the best hotel nor location, but the reviews are at least pretty good and it comes with free breakfast (which can perhaps justify the extra $13/nite over your budget)

Long Island City is also an option. Only a couple of stops to NYC on the subway, the rates could well be in the target area (or even a bit lower), and all the reported properties down to 2.5* are OK per most posted reviews online. Down side is that the neighborhood is a touch dodgy (though it is not as bad as it looks -- largely industrial, with one massive housing project). I was in the Best Western Plaza a couple of weeks ago and there were tourists from all over Europe.

I'm not currently seeing this (or any 3* property) offered when searching HOTWIRE for your dates... are you still seeing the above on your own search? If so, are you searching HOTWIRE for the needed 2rooms/4adults/0children?

A property with this amenity set has not yet been reported to the board, but i'm also still not seeing this offered when searching for your dates (May 20-24, correct?). In fact, i'm not seeing any 3.5* property offered in the MTE zone when searching your dates for 2rooms/4adults... only a 4* hotel in this zone at $197/nite US. What is the room rate per nite of the 3.5* MTE property?
