Check Priceline's retail offers too

Recommended Posts

I was looking for a good deal on a car rental in Las Vegas October 31 to November 2, 2011, this week. The rates were cheaper if I came on October 30 so I started bidding on those days. I bid $12 on a compact car, and then $14 on a midsize. I then noticed under additional car types to bid on the lowest retail (non bid) rate showed full size $6 a day!! I thought it had to be a mistake, but I backed up and tried the regular route. Sure enough Budget came up for $6 a day $24 total for 4 days full size car. Booked right away. Guess in pays to check bid and non bid rates on Priceline. I had been watching prices on Travelocity, but nothing near that price ever came up.

I use Priceline quite often to bid on hotels, but for car rentals I haven't find the deals to be very enticing at all lately. For the couple bucks that you might save, you lose a lot of flexibility. The retail prices at PL or the prices at carrentals.com are generally on par with the name-your-own-prices for the destinations I visit.

At one point it seemed that PL offered some savings on car rentals, but not quite so much anymore.

I did have a great win on PL for a full size SUV at DEN for 2/29/12 through 3/4/12. Best price on the retail side was over $100/day and PL win was for $45/day (Alamo). Once in awhile, it can really work out!

Your post was right on. In LA right now, they are offering much lower rates on mid sized SUVs than on Economy cars. I'll wait for the Ecos and Compacts to come down a bit since I don't want to be driving a truck in LA given the parking situation and the gas prices.

Z Kingpin,

You may want to book something that is fully refundable as a back-up reservation to protect yourself from rates moving higher over the next few weeks.
