This is for a stay in mid-august. I used the PRICELINE link on this site.

I'm looking for an hotel in Monterey too during that period of time and tried the biding strategy you suggested and it didn't work. I also used the same strategy up to 120$ for a 3.5* and it still didn't work. It looks like 125$ is still too low for Monterey. Would anyone have an idea of the price range in this area in August? Thanks!
