  1. Sorry. 3.5 star. There is a 3 star in that area (Millennium Hotel Durham) and we've stayed there before off a PRICELINE win and it was just gross, really want to avoid it if at all possible. I reviewed it on this site. I'll try again tomorrow with my $3 bids (using the PRICELINE links on this site) starting a little higher and going a little higher. I believe the Marriott Convention Center is on HOTWIRE at $90 so I'm thinking I can get it in the $75-80 range on Priceline. If I am still unsuccesful, I'll consider bidding in Chappel Hill, but we are seeing a show at the DPAC and want to stay close. :D Thanks!
  2. Hey there. Just tried bidding on a room for 1/26/13 starting at $44 and increasing to $65 by 3 dollar bids using rebidding zones and the PRICELINE link on this board. No success. Will try again later. We have a cancelable room reserved and have used PRICELINE before in this area getting the Marriott at $69, so I'm hoping I can get it again. We don't want to stay in any other zones.
  3. WHEW! I wanted a room in Durham, bid 3.5* only Started at $49 and increased the price ($53, $57, $61, $65) with re-bidding zones until my bid of $69 was accepted. I finally got the Durham Marriott City Center at 201 Foster Street. It was my last rebidding zone too! Room Subtotal: $69.00 Taxes $9.94 Fees: $8.94 Total: $87.88 Room is listed as $144.00 on the website, rack rate. AAA at $130.00 (of which I am a member). I thought it was a new hotel listing for this website, but it's the same address as the Durham Marriott Convention Center, so they may have changed the name. ETA: We are going for the Paul Simon concert (bucket list!) and in looking at the website, I find that the DPAC, where he's performing, is a 2 block walk from the hotel. Bonus!
  4. OK, closing this thread. Tried the strategy again this morning and stick a fork in me, I'm done. Looking forward to my trip and we have that reserved room at the Comfort Inn which will be fine. I used the links every chance I got so I feel good that at least I helped out with that and I will use the board in the future. Thanks so much! :)
  5. unsuccessful again today. Will try one more time next weekend then close the thread. I just want to give it one more shot before we go just in case of last minute desparation to fill the rooms on the hotels' part. :)
  6. Update: Tried the revised 4* and 3.5* plus the 3* strategy today, with my $9 a night hotel bonus cash (bidding up to $201 the last bid so the last bid evened out at $210). Unsuccessful. So, just for kicks, I searched each night individually on hotwire, just to see which night was more expensive. I think it's Tuesday first, then Wednesday and Thursday, and Friday would be cheapest. I wrote down the prices for just 2 hotels. On Tuesday and Wednesday night, an ESB hotel is $230. That hotel disappears on Thursday and Friday. A Midtown Central hotel is listed at $366 on Tuesday, drops to $357 Wednesday, to $356 on Thursday, and down to a whopping $243 on Friday night. Do you recommend splitting my bid next week if the strategy doesn't work (and I think it won't), and if so, how? Tue/Wed and Thur/Fri? I can change or cancel my reservation for the Comfort Inn up to 24 hours before check in. If you don't think it will help one bit, I think I'll just try the strategy twice more over the next 2 weekends and then quit trying. I'm getting tired. :) Thanks.
  7. ETA: After careful consideration, can you please give me a 3* bidding strategy up to $200 for the following zones only: TS, MTW, HK. Also, we've left MTE off on the 3.5* strategy because of the possibility of getting the Millennium UN, which you said was 15 minutes to the nearest subway. Their website says it's "steps away from Grand Central" and looking at the map it looks like it's 3 1/2 blocks away. Doesn't seem like 15 minutes...? How long has it been since this hotel had a Priceline win reported? Just wondering if I should take a chance, considering the Helmsley is winning a lot, too. Thoughts? Thanks!
  8. unsuccessful again today, even with my $9 a night bonus hotel cash. :) (And I also bid up to $201 to make my final bid $210 with the bonus cash. I have a feeling most hotels have winning bids ending with 5 or 0) AH well. It's all good. At least we have a backup hotel reserved.
  9. I always check, hoping...Today, jackpot! I have somehow received rewards! $36 Hotel Cash Bonus Cash reward (when I did my bidding today, it was $9 a day) on 3-4* hotels $12 Rental Car Bonus Cash Reward $18 Rental Car Bonus Cash Reward I don't need a rental car so I didn't try. Curious as to WHY I got these rewards, but I'm not complaining. :) Hopefully it's a promotion for everyone and so it's not just me. Just always make sure you check your rewards before you bid, you never know what you'll see! And remember to use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on betterbidding.com for all your searches and bidding.
  10. I did the new strategy that was posted 8/5 at those rates (the higher rates, up to $200) Of course I used the PRICELINE links--wouldn't dream of bidding w/o because you guys have been so nice. I just think the hotels don't have the inventory. I'll keep trying until a few days before we leave, bidding once a week -- the strategy takes me a good hour to get through! Not complaining--I knit while I wait for the searches, so it's ok.
  11. Will keep trying. At least we will see lots of people milling about in really cool native dress! (Keeping positive!) :) I'll let you know when I give up. See how I changed that there, not when I win a room!? We know now--go Jan-March or June-August... :)
  12. Ah yes. I had checked before and thought the UN is in session the week following, but yes--opening meeting is September 13th. I'm wondering if people are coming for the 10th anniversary of 9/11 and just staying the week? Ah, well. We still have over a month. There may be a last minute deal posted somewhere. I have a back-up reservation at the Comfort Inn Times Square for $224 (rate with AAA discount). It has pretty good reviews on Trip Advisor and comes with breakfast, so it's not terribly bad. We were just hoping for something either cheaper or nicer. It will be fine if we use it.
  13. Ok. I was unsucessful. Did the entire strategy, no counter offers even. I find it terribly hard to believe that I can't even get a winning bid on a 3.5* for $200, but ces't la vie--perhaps there is some sort of convention or something. Maybe Blondie and Kara DioGuardi are drawing bigger crowds than I ever dreamed possible... Still, I'm a bit frustrated and growing weary of bidding. Now, I did have something that has never happened. At the 3.5* level, when I bid $160 with MTW, HK, ESB, it took FOREVER. I was watching that blue screen for 5 minutes and I started worrying. Usually when it takes a while I get the "check your request" button, but nothing. Finally after about 8 minutes, I got a blue Priceline "Server Error" page. William Shatner staring at me doing a pose (you know what I mean). I didn't know if my bid when through, but I was no longer logged in. I closed the browser, used the link from this website and, after checking my request to make sure nothing was won, I tried again. Apparently the bid didn't go through, but from that bid up until about $190 bids, I got results in 1-2 seconds, extremely quick. I thought this was weird. SO, perhaps there was something wrong with thier server this morning and they just rejected everything? I'll try again next weekend. Sigh. Also, finally, my newest strategy says: Select 3.5* MTW, HK, ESB, HK... Bid $170, if rejected add re-bid zone... Bid $175, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINE I'm assuming one of these HK's is a MSG, correct? That's what I did.
  14. You guys rock! Thank you SO much! I'm going to try this tomorrow. Fingers crossed! :)
  15. Lowest price is my top priority. I listed them in order as to which I'd choose if I could, but any of the zones l listed are fine. Thank you so much!
  16. OK, I think it's time to break out the new strategy. Can we re-do a 4* strategy, max $200, for the following zones, in order of preference: MTE, MTW, TS, ESB, HK, Chelsea, and CPS. Then, can we do a 3.5* strategy, max $200, for the following zones in order of preference: MTW, TS, ESB, HK, and MSG. Having trouble getting something but we do have a cancelable room reserved that will be fine if we have to use it--will keep trying for a 4* add the 3.5 in a week or so, but looks like it's a very busy time of year plus one weekend night may be messing with us (we don't want to split the bid just yet). Will keep you up to date on winning or losing bids and, of course, always use the links from this website. Thank you!
  17. 4*, $190 top bid, MTW, MTE, CPS, ESB, TS. I'm using HK as my first rebidding zone (I know it may "take" but I'm good with that, I decided to add it after the above bidding strategy and it works to plug up the missing Brooklyn re-bidding zone since they went 4* last week), then Coney Island, LI, MSG, Queensborough and UES. Just nothing open, yet, but I have hope I'll get something. Hotwire prices keep dropping, for instance there is a 3* ESB hotel on Hotwire (I think Murray Hill Estates) currently at $183 that was over $250 when I first started looking, and it's very early yet. I have a cancelable reservation at a Comfort Inn we will be fine with should we have to use it. I'm really fine with trying right now, it's so early. I have considered that I'm getting rejected because of that Friday night being a different set price, but I'm unwilling to split my bids. May do so the week before we leave (our cancelable is cancelable up to 24 hours before) but I'm really not sure I want to do it on a 4 night trip. I figured I'll add 3.5* in late August and 3* in September bidding more than once a week, then picking up my bids to every day the week before.
  18. unsucessful again today. Will keep trying once a week until late August, when I'll add in 3.5*. :)
  19. Went to Priceline for my weekly bidding (I'm working on getting a 4* in NYC Sep 13-17 under $190) and, as always, checked all the zones. BROOKLYN is listing a 4* now, which can be VERY dangerous for anyone using it as a re-bidding zone! Looks like there are only 5 re-bidding zones for NYC at the 4* level now, instead of 6.
  20. Well, I added in HK today with CPS and was still unsuccessful. I am still very early, though. Thanks, Aaron and thereuare for all your help and advice. If I decide to do 3.5 later (lots of Helmsley wins lately, I see!) I will let you know and will drop CPS and MTE out for those very reasons! :) Thanks, again.
  21. I think I'll add HK in with my CPS bids, then. Still plenty of time and I'm having fun with the "hunt." Thanks, Aaron. If I don't get something by mid-August, we'll add in 3.5, too. I'm sure I'll get something and if not, the Comfort Inn will be fine.
  22. I tried again today, unsucessful. I think I'm still too far away for a busy time of year and will be sucessful later. However, what do you think of adding in Hell's Kitchen? I know the only hotel that's been reported is Ink48, and there is the possibility of something new sneaking in, but Ink48 is fabulous and it's in the same area that we'd like and I believe within walking distance of the theatre district (which is our main reason for going)0. Thanks!
  23. unsucessful today again. I have hope, though, since someone on this board posted a 3.5* win the week before and prices seem to be slowly dropping (a few dollars at a time) according to hotwire and Hotels.com. I feel like I'm right on the cusp so I'll continue with this 4* until August, when I'll add in 3.5* bidding. Thanks!
  24. just tried strategy again, unsucessful. Will try again next weekend. :)
